At the bus stop

I'm renaming my blog soon. It will be themed according to my frequent experiences at the Ypsianti Transit Center while waiting for the bus. Lord knows there's always something to share. This is not all negative, as there are some interesting people i run into upon being asked to spare a cig. "Misadventures on Pearl Street" is on it's way.

Food Service Industry pet peeve #12032

When you're about to take someone's order and they approach with a, "hey how are you?" then immediately start ordering their food... Why'd you bother with the opening line if you aren't going to allow time for a response? I know it's just considered good manners to use that phrase or whatever, but all i hear is inconsideration. Even though you probably assume i’m going to say “good, how are you?” and you will say, “good thanks”, and then you will order... at least that allows for an exchange of communication that has potential for POSSIBILITY. Possibly we’re both “good”, or possibly you tell me it’s been a terrible day, because you found out Puddle of Mud(d?) canceled their Detroit tour date. And i possibly respond in shock, proceeding to tell you how they’re my *fave* band. And you invite me over for tunes and pizza ( Puddle of Mud love-making session, POSSIBLY ;) ), while the customer behind you patiently waits in line, but complains about his wait to the manager after eating, and i lose my job. (That is what happens when one shares their infatuation with such a terrible band, he says, before clocking me out forever.)  Also, allowing time for a response makes it an equal exchange of communication. Don’t hog all the words, k?!  People just say things to say them, but don’t even think about what they’re actually saying. People don’t pay attention. i don’t really think strangers care much about how another stranger who is serving their food is doing, but if that’s the case, why not skip the “how are you?” Not all communication is necessary just for the sake of ‘being polite’. How about being honest, instead? I honestly don’t care how you’re doing, but i’d like to order some delicious food and i appreciate you being here to take my order B-)
