Ch-ch-changes in the deep

We tend to think of the deep seafloor as being cold, dark, and unchanging. But only the first two are correct. A 30-year study off the California coast has revealed dramatic fluctuations in deep-sea animal communities. Despite decades of research, scientists are still not sure what drives these changes.  

MBARI marine ecologist Ken Smith has led research efforts at Station M— a deep-sea study site about 220 kilometers (137 miles) west of the Central California coast and 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) below the surface.  By using seafloor cameras, landers, core samplers, sediment traps, and a variety of underwater robots, the researchers have collected a detailed, long-term record of changes in these communities. This year was a tough one. I somehow got through breaking my foot and having surgery. I quit my job as an adjunct instructor because it was killing me. I applied to my favorite antique mall on a whim. Got that job. Met a million new people who have made my life much better. Finally feel happy-ish. Tomorrow I do the last walkthrough of my new house and Wednesday we sign the papers and I get the keys. I’m looking forward to what 2019 will bring! Fitter. Happier.
