Mulan (2020)
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Just finished watching Disney’s Mulan and to be completely honest I did not pay the premium fee. I pirated the movie instead😌. Disney can suck it if they think I’ll pay more than a movieticket to see a movie on the service I’m already paying for.
First off, if you know the original cartoon Mulan, forget everything you know about it and don’t expect anything. That sounds very negative towards Mulan (2020), but I mean it in the best way possible. At its core, the story is the same, but this movie is completely different from the original. There are some recognizable scenes though. Like the one where Mulan goes to bathe in the lake and the other soldiers also get into the lake unexpectedly.
A major disappointment was that there was no sign of the ultimate legend and hypeman Mushu and dreamy general Shang. Also, no musical numbers whatsoever. As a big musical lover I thought it was a bummer. They kind of made up for it by making a beautiful instrumental composition of ‘Reflection’.
Cricket is also a whole person now, he is just as adorable and a great warrior, rivaling Oliver Queen’s archery skills.
Another greatly appreciated character is Honghui. A new character for this movie whom in my personal opinion has great love interest potential for Mulan. (Besides being a great warrior and the one sticking up for Mulan despite her being female)
Also the witch was a badass villain with dope powers.
Most importantly, the movie really shone a light on female empowerment and genderequality. As a girl, Mulan is obviously not accepted into the Imperial Army, so she pretends to be a man in order to protect her injured father from going to war. During her time in the training camp she gets confronted with how superficial the men are about women and actually think of them as lower beings. Associations with women are punishable by death even. The soldiers also learn about the three virtues: “loyal, brave, true”. Mulan obviously struggles with the last virtue. In the end when she reveals herself a woman she is eliminated from the army. However she returns to warn them about their enemy’s (Böri Kahn) plan, the generals don’t listen to her because she is a woman. Honghui points this out by saying “you would listen to her if Hua Jun (her male alter ego) said it, but because it’s Hua Mulan, you won’t listen.”
I believe this movie is greatly important for Asian representation in Hollywood. The casting for the movie obviously shows a great job done, but behind the scenes is a different story. Apparently there were barely Asian crewmembers: not the director, not the screenwriters, not the costume designers and so on. This is a damn shame, because representation doesn’t just stop at what is seen by the public on the white screen. Behind the camera is even more important if you ask me. It’s important for people of all kinds to see themselves represented in all kinds of positions. Especially, for this movie which has been pivotal for Asian representation since the original, you would think there would be more people involved of Asian descent.
Despite the dissapointment and controversy, the movie is highly entertaining with beautifully shot scenes, a compelling score and fighting scenes which keep you at the edge of your seat. The story is at its core still the original Mulan, but don’t be too surprised when you notice that the most memorable things have been left out and replaced with something else entirely.
As a true fan of the original movie I am sad it’s not exactly what I had hoped for with General Shang’s charm, Mushu’s humor and beautiful musical numbers. That aside, Mulan(2020) is still a great movie on its own if you don’t have any knowledge of the original.
What did you think of Mulan(2020)?
Thank you for reading, ‘till next time!
It’s Beyonce’s Birthday!!!
Happy birthday to the Queen B!!! I’ll be over here blasting B-Day in celebration.
Hey I just had a Q for you and your followers. I’m trying to find a WA fan fic. I can’t remember the plot but I think Wally and Joe are surgeons? And they help Barry when he gets injured? And I think he proposes to Iris in hospital? Am I going insane or mixing fan fics? If someone knows that’d be amazing! I loved that fic
Aww, I’ve never heard of that one personally, but it sounds great!
Anyone else?
I think I know which one Anon means. But I don’t remember the exact name. It is where Iris is the CSI and Barry is the detective right? Kind of enemies to lovers? But that has been deleted for a while now...

Candice is a trailblazer; she has paved and continues to pave the way for so many black actresses to be cast as leads in genre fiction. Her courage and her grace are extremely admirable, but she should not have had to be strong, while being completely isolated for years. She was on a network that remained silent when she was being racially abused online; she had producers who simply told her to stay offline once she was cast, instead of actively supporting her online. She had no idea her employer provided a department for dealing with death threats, because they never informed her of the fact, until she went to them and said that she was receiving death threats. On set, she received little to no public support from her co-stars for years, despite the fact that every one of them on social media were completely aware of the racist vitriol directed at her. They all stayed silent. They all were complicit. Meanwhile, Candice wasn’t even allowed to wear her natural hair onscreen until season 6, and she had producers who dared label her a diva simply for asking for black make-up artists and hair stylists. During the first season of the show, she would have to go back to her trailer to touch up her make-up just minutes before she had to film, because she had MUAs who did not know how to apply make-up on a black woman. Her only regular female co-star on the show for four years spent most of her time emboldening her racist fandom against Candice and Iris.
Onscreen, Iris has been shortchanged frequently where white leading ladies would not be. There is a constant perpetuation of misogynoir in the narrative time and again. Iris was denied her own wedding; she was denied her fully-fledged journalistic arc for years; even as she hires her own Team, the women whom she hires cannot solely be tied to the Citizen and Iris’s story and absolutely have to be integrated into Team Flash, because Iris isn’t allowed her own Team of journalists. She constantly is self-sacrificing, while the narrative devalues her very livelihood; she is constantly expected to be strong and be there for others, but is denied comfort.
And yet Candice is still here, delivering amazing performance after amazing performance, while the CW and the show capitalize on her popularity. Candice is such a role model, but she never should have gone through what she did. Every single person who has been complicit in how badly she has been treated on this show and network should be absolutely ashamed in perpetuating this racist treatment. They now want to put out hollow statements about how they stand with their black colleagues, when they’ve constantly mistreated black actors and actresses and perpetuated anti-black racism against them.

White privilege is very real. If that offends you, then you are apart of the problem. White people, we need to do better. Take a minute to consider a Black person’s experience today.
Finding words to say in such a sad time in this world is so difficult. It doesn’t matter what you say because someone, somewhere is either going to agree or disagree with it. Maybe that’s something we all need to understand. What is right in your mind might be wrong to someone else. Arguing about someone’s personal opinion is only dragging the division in our world out more. My heart is in absolute agony over the death of George Floyd.
My heart hurts for the men and women who face this type of fear every single day because of the color of their skin. This stops with ME. We all have skin and we are all created equally. Please know I stand with you even though I will never understand the fear or anything you have ever gone through. Your feelings on this topic are valid and they are heard. Your life matters just as much as anyone else in this world. #GeorgeFloyd #ItEndsWithMe
The last days have been so heavy on my heart, mind and body. I’m not even from USA and I’m hurting for my brothers and sisters all the way across the ocean...
This song came on in my shuffled playlist and I just burst into tears...
Let there be justice for George and his family. May justice have victory✊🏾
I watch the flash and i hear people say that danielle nicolet and candice don't get along or danielle tries to fit in
Obviously I do not know the whole story. But from what I have noticed, they used to be close on set. But it seems like they barely acknowledge eachother now... Nicolet seems to really get along with Panenaker tho and I can’t support that for what DP has done to undermine Candice.
Hollywood
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
I want to start of with a grand applause for Hollywood on Netflix. It is was not at all what I expected, but I was positively surprised! When I first watched the trailer and saw Darren Criss I was already sold, but I just thought that it was going to be old Hollywood and how he was going to be the breakout star. And then there was the tease about the controversy of a black person involved in the making of a movie, so that also got my attention, but nothing else was remarked from the trailer. It also gave me major musical vibes, so I expected that they would break out in song every moment… Spoiler, they didn’t.
There are a lot of important and remarkable characters on this show. Almost everyone we see has some significance to the plot and overall story. But I don’t want to bore you with a detailed dissection of all of them, so I’ll be explicitly discussing 4 characters.
The new series on Netflix is basically about 5 young people trying to make it in Hollywood.
First there is Jack Castello, he essentially drives the story, he was a veteran in World War II. Now he is trying to pursue a dream of becoming a movie star so he can provide for his (spoiler) cheating pregnant wife… bit sad ain’t it. In the beginning he obviously struggles and makes some morally questioning decisions to make ends meet. This shady business gets him a foot a in the door at a major production company, Ace Pictures, by sleeping with the casting director and the wife of Ace Pictures’ owner. Ultimately, he gets cast in the movie Meg written by Archie Coleman.
Secondly, we meet Archie Coleman. An aspiring black gay screenwriter. He also is struggling to make ends meet. He gets caught up in the same shady business as Jack. However, he has written and send a script to Ace Pictures. A peculiar thing about this, is that no one at the studios know of his race or sexual orientation. Archie doesn’t want to be known as a black screenwriter, but as a screenwriter. Which I think is a great sentiment. Against all odds, he gets the call that his script will be made into a movie and that is when the series really starts.
Then there is Camille Washington. She is a contracted black actress at Ace Pictures. As a black girl in the fifties she doesn’t get cast as important roles though… She mostly plays the dumb maid and is used for comical relief. The latter is quite recognizable still… Camille tries to give the characters she plays more agency and some sense of seriousness but is shutdown at every chance. Until a very lucky audition she gets cast as the leading actress of Archies movie, becoming the very first black lead actress on the white screen.
With a black lead actress, a black screenwriter, and an interracial couple at the head of Meg, the movie and studios get major criticism from the society. They threaten everyone involved, going as far as setting fire to the studios’ president’s home and protesting outside the studios’ gates. While all of this is going down, Dick Samuels rises to the stand to offer comfort and motivates everyone to go on and “fuck the haters”. Dick is a closeted employee at Ace Pictures and oversees every movie in production and makes sure that everything is as it should be. He really is the backbone of the whole project. From the very beginning he is very much supportive of the movie and the progressive innuendos. He really feels like the sweetest uncle ever. However, he is struggling with his sexuality. Society isn’t very supporting of homosexuality, to say the least. Especially in Hollywood it could mean the end of one’s career.
Together with countless amazing characters these four remarkable people set out to make the movie that will make history against all odds. Everyone is aware that the movie they made will either be an incredibly good thing or a great disaster. As the president Avis Amberg during her toast says: “we’ll either be looked at as the smartest people in the room or we will never work again. To never working again.” Personally, I love this quote. This quote means that the movie will be so controversial, that changes need to happen within the filming industry. But the people are too small minded to ever want that to happen, hence the protests. So, while to be looked at as the smartest people in the room is great, it won’t have the same impact as when they all would be fired for releasing the movie and then never work again. This means they have done a tremendous job with so much power and impact, that people will be scared for what they will do next and how it will affect them. So, keeping them out of a job represents the fear of that power to me.
What I commend Hollywood most for is that every properly introduced character had a purpose, a mission, a “flaw” and grew from it. I say “flaw”, because of the way the “flaw” was perceived by other in the series, like sexual orientation and race. But there were also genuine flaws like sexual manipulation, homophobias and infidelity. The characters were so well fleshed out that I really understood them, what they stood for and why they would do certain things the way they did. Even the “villainy” characters showed this growth and progression. Most tv shows I watch, characters are mostly explained but growth is barely shown. So, for this series with only 7 episodes to round out their characters without it feeling rushed, is something I appreciate.
While I definitely enjoyed the series, I don’t think I want another season. It probably would be about how the characters are holding up now as well-established names in Hollywood or maybe different people would take the spotlight now. But to me that feels unnecessary, because the way this show ended already gave me a feeling of completion and I think a second season would be too much of a good thing.
Kudos to everyone involved with Hollywood. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it 10/10 to others to go and watch it. I might have already pressured my sister and cousin.
Thank you for reading! Tell me what you thought of Hollywood and ‘till next time!
Never thought being part of a passionate fandom was going to be this frustrating... I really really love the Flash, but this cast makes it so hard to root for them. I adore Grant, but all the messiness(if you know what I’m talking about) is making it so hard to continue to appreciate him.
Most recently, last weekend has made me so mad at everyone. I absolutely love Candice and everything she stands for. So for her cast mates to barely support her and acknowledge her causes, has made me so mad and disappointed at them... As much as I love the show and don’t want it to end, I truly hope things get better and the cast can actually show and become the “family” they claim to be.
Just had to get this off my chest...
The Invisible man became real Paranormal Activity for a sec😅
