A recent survey done by the website The Gay UK has found that 60% of those polled find using the term “Queer” to describe members of the LGBT community is offensive and inappropriate.
Shockingly, people who are likely to have actually had the term used as a slur against them aren’t fans of it being used to describe them.

let’s talk about my patient yesterday who complained that every male ultrasound tech that has performed a vaginal ultrasound on her pushed the probe way too far and clearly had no concept of vaginal comfort during penetrative procedures
let’s talk about how not once have i hurt any of my patients during vaginal ultrasounds, and if they have issues with penetration such as vulvodynia or a history of endometriosis, i take a long, slow time to do the ultrasound and check in frequently, and will attempt to do an abdominal ultrasound instead if warranted
let’s talk about how it is most certainly because i am a woman and therefore i understand my female patients and their comfort levels much more than any dude could.

Listening to men talk can be so draining. A lot of them tend to overvestimate the value and/or originality of their insights. And their lack of emotional intelligence makes them oblivious to nonverbal signals of pure disinterest.

My take on PYNK
What cis women are not getting is that you can make a real and vested effort to include trans women and still fuck up. An artist you love can make something that you resonate with and it can still carry problematic ideology. Something can be a step in the right direction but still be imperfect and flawed. PYNK tried, I won’t deny that. PYNK wanted to include us, but still recycled tired arguments which conflate all women to vaginas and included trans women in ways which were lackluster at best and downright offensive in glaring ways at worst, and more often than not were invisible or countered by other ill informed or cissexist rhetoric in the video and lyrics. This was not a personal journey, as multiple times PYNK was proclaimed as a representation of all women, including trans women (we see this in the tweet y’all all share to claim it’s not transphobic, so don’t try and backtrack and say it’s excused because it’s based solely in her own self-love or experiences as of yet. We all know that’s selective at best)
Does this make Janelle Monae an avowed transphobe on a warpath? No. Does it make her a TERF? God, no. But do we need to tacitly and uncritically absorb PYNK as a sapphic anthem? Never. It is an attempt, which is better than many will not even do. It is a failed attempt, in the opinion of myself and many other trans women and transfeminine folks. You can read into it as much as you want and explain to us why we’re wrong all you want and why we’re haters not people informed by our own lived experiences and knowledge of the form and function of transmisogyny and trans exclusion we have witnessed and experienced our entire lives.
And you will be wrong. We have our right to critique the actions of Any and All cis women who claim to represent women as a whole, which PYNK did claim to do. We have a right to say, again and again, that trans women have a right to be wary of images of womanhood preoccupied with genitalia. We have a right to our stances. Do not dare try to silence us. The body is never the source of oppression for women, but a vehicle by which oppression is acted out. A woman’s ability to give birth or not, her genitalia in any form, her face, her chest, her ass will always be tools used by patriarchy to continue her oppression but they are not the source of her oppression. Her status as a woman and the devaluing of women in all their myriad physical forms is.
I love Janelle Monae, and this will be far from the straw that breaks my love for her. But PYNK is not my anthem. It does not include me, as much as I want it to. PYNK was a trial run at including trans women and I hope that for once y'all can clean out your fucking ears and LISTEN to trans women’s critiques. A note to close: Afab trans people, do not argue with me. Do not act as though you have any authority on transmisogyny or the voices of trans women and transfeminine people. Do not tell me you watched this video and saw no issue. I do not care. Your voices are not those at the center here. Step down, step back, and listen.
