I got up to my friend praising Chappell Roan's grammy dress, and it feels so bleak.

Not only the see through material looking pike something I could probably find in my wardrobe as an old forgotten curtain, that was unnecessary touch given how the rest of it looked, not only heels and thongs.

It's not aversion to nudity. The human body is neutral. Personally, I've got no problem with nudity in spaces where it's to be expected (like locker rooms, saunas, my grandma's bathroom bc apparently its free real estate etc).

The aversion is to sexualisation and objectification of female body. There's a reason only women are expected to wear the most revealing clothes and be overly sexual.

You need to examine (if I may get back so) why do you think woman having to sell her body to be successful is empowering? Something whats empowering should be giving power to her, there isn't any when you're in a position you must appeal to men (mostly) with your naked body. It's not power if you need to plead and please for it. You should be enough, your talent should be enough. You should be able to be free from pressure to present yourself like a sex object in order to be noticed, that's the dignity her male colleagues get. They get to parade in suits and be judged for their talent. And before you try to say 'but men are supposed to perform!' ask yourself, are you sure this is remotely comparable.

There's a serious issue that discomfort with women's bodies being treated like objects is being equated with discomfort with nudity. There's a reason you immediately jump to the conclusion that it's nudity that is the problem. How often do you see women going around with their breasts out? Hell, even comfortably walking around without bra? Why nursing mothers have to hide away even though it's the most natural thing to be feeding your baby? There's a reason it's like this, and it's because the only way a woman can be in public like that is that she's selling her body for recognition her male co-stars get right away. If shes sexual for the benefit of men who can oogle her. The actual empowering thing would be to be able to go around in suits, dresses that let you keep your dignity, and still be treated as equal.

I understand being aware of all this is unpleasant, but next time a famous woman has to perform her sexuality for crowds please don't kid yourself. She's not taking back any power, she's right where they want her to be.

Very well written @kindradical, it's mind boggling to me that this even needs an explanation. Yes, the female body in its natural state is objectively neutral but like everything else, nothing exists detached from social standards or is unaffected by patriarchal influence.

i think the reason why a lot of trans activists cannot get this point at all and would pretend to not know what you are even talking about (even though they definitely use this language) is because they think gender is simply about personality. that there is a personality called "woman" and a personality called "man", and just like you could be a naturally born introvert, you could also have a naturally born "girl personality" or whatever. what they then refuse to understand is that there is no such thing as that either because stereotypes and social expectations are not actual personalities and both sexes can possess all sorts of mixed personality traits without that being a sign of anything at all. and very often what they think of as likeness and identification with a social expectation doesn't necessarily even manifest as that exact behavior. as in... a whopping majority of trans people are easily identified as trans, even when they "pass" externally, because they have zero clue how to act like the group they are trying to identify as, despite them desperately pretending they already are like them. like sure, you do keep saying you have always had a "woman" personality but beyond the dress and the fake boobs, where is it? i can't see it. you're absolutely nothing like any woman i have ever talked to. so am i just supposed to take your word for it? that's thick.
