Freakery is that piece of disability and ableism where bodies that are deformed, disfigured, scarred and non-normatively physically disabled live.  Its roots come out of monsters and goblins and beasts; from the freak shows of the 1800’s where physically disabled folks, trans and gender non-conforming folks, indigenous folks and people of color were displayed side-by-side.  It is where “beauty” and “freak” got constructed day in and day out, where “whiteness” and “other” got burned into our brains.  It is part of the legacy of Ugly and it is part of my legacy as a queer disabled woman of color.  It is a part of all of our history as queer people of color.  It is how I know we must never let ourselves be on the side of the gawking crowd ever again in any way.

friend who thinks about family annihilators too much: you don't get it, this is important because of how we as a society react to the crime. a guy who kills his wife is not seen as on the level of evil as a family annihilator even with the exact same pathology and potential. a lot of mass shooters had records of domestic violence but they were not considered such a threat until they escalated. why is hurting women never a warning sign? there is more concern over the future of a man who hurts an animal than one who hurts a woman. if he hurts an animal, he's acting like a serial killer. if he hurts a woman, it's one mistake that shouldn't ruin his life. do you ever think about that

Was really interested going into this movie because as someone who isn’t very up to speed on any backrooms lore besides the og post I like the backrooms best when there are no monsters, but the environment itself makes you feel unsafe. You’re paranoid and panicking but then you get out and realize that there was nothing to be afraid of, nothing was even there to chase you in the first place it was just your mind tricking itself.

So I think it’s so interesting that this movie did both- there is a monster but it’s You. It’s a monster you made up it’s a physical manifestation of your fear. It hurts people because you hurt people. You’re unsafe because you created the environment and that means your fear is out to get you.

Revolutionaries in Africa understood that the question of African liberation was not just a question of race, that even if they managed to get rid of the white colonialists, if they didn’t rid themselves of the capitalistic economic structure, the white colonialists would simply be replaced by Black neocolonialists. There was not a single liberation movement in Africa that was not fighting for socialism. In fact, there was not a single liberation movement in the whole world that was fighting for capitalism. This is the only known photo of the first trans woman to have her gender legally recognized in Switzerland.

In 1914, Adine T. sent a letter to her local police to grant her a pass to dress as she pleased. She petitioned that "I be granted permission to live as a woman, to wear female clothing and to pursue female occupations, and to be considered a woman before the world in all and every respect, since my emotional feelings are totally feminine and I feel unspeakably unhappy in male clothing."

Her gender was so clear that even the conservative Swiss government had to recognize it. Obtaining permission to live as a woman "is a matter of life and death for me," Adine added.
