"Bullshit it’s nothing."
"--Mind your own business, Stilinski."
And as far as Scott was concerned, this was as far as the conversation needed to go; he’d said to his dad what he wanted to say and he knew it wasn’t fair or conducive to familial healing to keep hashing up the same old crap. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t be watching though. "So… take out?"
Raf waited to see what Scott's reaction would be, and when it was good, he broke out into a smile. "Sure, take out. I don't know what's good around here. You call, I'll pay."
"It's nothing."

“Look ——- I get that once upon a time this was your house, but now it’s mom and I’s so I’d appreciate it if you respected my privacy.”
"Scott I—— I just wanted to see you."
"Thanks Mr McCall. Is it Mr McCall or do I have to call you Agent McCall?"
"—I like you Miguel, you’re a nice kid. Call me Rafe."
Then I’ll withhold my judgment until I get his. I still don’t like how tall you are.
"That’s fair enough, but I can’t really change how tall I am."
” Miguel?”
"Your son Miguel." She sounded like she had no idea who Miguel was, so he figured Stilinski had lied to him. Again. "—Stiles told me this kid he brought around was his cousin."
"You just… you ruined her for awhile, I think," Scott said, and for a moment, he couldn’t even look at his dad. It hurt him to say those words, to put them out there for him to potentially use against his mom should the occasion ever rise, but Scott needed him to know. "But I think she still loves you. And I wanna be on good terms with you, I do. I just had to find out your intentions, you know? To make sure she wasn’t going to set herself up to fail, because I’m not gonna let anyone do that to her, ever. She’s worth more than that.”
"Scott, I’m so sorry. I never realised—" he knew how badly he’d affected Scott by not being there, but he’d never really considered how bad he’d hurt Melissa. Damn. "I’m not gonna hurt her again. Or you. Either of you. Okay? I haven’t had a drink for a while now. I’m better."
A simple, short sigh shouldn’t have his shoulders slumping, shouldn’t have him wondering whether he should apologize or maybe offer reassurance because he shouldn’t feel guilty that his dad is feeling bad about this. That was what he’d wanted. Only he didn’t want that now, and he’s not sure if he ever really did. In fact, he’s not sure what he wants at all.
He’s listening carefully, senses honing in on that level heartbeat. He’s not lying; he really does want to be around, and that both scares him and has his heart fluttering happily in equal measures.
He ducks his head and scuffs his foot, making a noncommittal noise at his words because he’s not sure he can trust his voice. He’s surprised that his dad’s words don’t make him angry.
"Just- Promise you wont turn anything good down?” He’s thinking of the brief things his mom had told him; about his dad’s success in big cities, and even though she’d tended to put a negative spin on the whole thing, he’d always been enthralled as a kid and usually relayed the stories back to Stiles, until over time, the whole negative-spin-thing became more likable than hearing about the good stuff.
"You could always just- I mean, I get it if you don’t want to, but there’s a spare room. Just no bed. It’s just full of junk at the moment, anyway. We could sort that out. Just for now, anyway."
“I promise. I’m based here now, so the only time I’ll be away will be for specific cases. Speaking of which, there’s a serial down south and if they don’t catch the guy within a week then they’re sending me. Things like this — this is the only time I’ll be away, alright?” He’d missed his wife and kid so much, he regretted not being there for so long.
When Scott said about the spare room, Raf held his hands up, “Scott, that’s nice of you to offer, it really is, but it might make your mother uncomfortable. Maybe you should ask her first.” He suggested, but it did sound like a good idea. He just wanted to make sure Melissa was alright with it first, since the last thing he wanted was to make her feel awkward. His presence around the house and them had been steadily growing since he’d been back in Beacon Hills, but actually living with them, albeit in a separate room, might cause conflict. But he couldn’t deny the thought of being closer to them sounded good.
There was a sharp inhalation of breath, followed by an almost curt nod. It wasn’t that that wasn’t the answer Scott was hoping for; on the contrary, he kind of was. And still—… "Okay," he said, nodding again. "But you should know, and I mean this from the very bottom of my heart… if you hurt her again…" The threat hung in the air. "Don’t. Hurt her again, I mean."
Rafael nodded in response. It wasn't his intention -- he didn't want to hurt Melissa, at all. But it made him oddly quite proud to see how protective Scott was of his mother, it was a nice thing to see.
"Scott--" he wondered how to phrase it, "I'm not looking to just swoop in. It's not how I want to play it. There's a lot between your mother and I, some good stuff and some bad stuff, and I'm not even sure if she still feels the same. My main priority...is you. I just want to be on good terms with the pair of you."
"Did you um. Did you come back just for me, or did you… come back for mom, too?"
Well, this was awkward. He cleared his throat, then looked off to the side for a minute. "Both." He replied eventually, before returning his gaze to Scott's.

Melissa felt him step in front of her, taking the brunt of the water even though she was already drenched. She coughed some as he laid on his back and he was trying to fix the sink. She stopped watching him when he called her Mel. She swallowed and she bit her lower lip and nodded. She ran and got some of the bathroom towels and some tape, some good duct tape that they had around many places in the house. She was still as drenched as she was and when she looked down at Raf she could help but hide a smile behind her hand.
She was glad that Scott wasn’t here to see this. To see the sink explode, to know the house was really falling apart. Her family house just not being kept up right and going through supernatural changes. She did kinda wish he could see how Raf was pitching in.
Their first house had a sink that burst and it had been a devastating but fun day. She cleared her throat as she handed him the tape and she turned to get a towel from the counter and she slipped in the puddle of water, falling on his stomach and she could help but laugh, “Oh god, Raf I’m sorry.” she said with a laugh, She bit her lower lip as she stayed on top of him for a bit to make sure he was okay,”Tell me I didn’t break you too much. I need you to fix the sink.” she teased some.
"Dammit----" he laughed a little when she handed him the duct tape, "I can't guarantee this won't turn out worse than before I got my hands on it. I break everything I touch." It was intended as a lighthearted joke as in he broke physical things, but the weight of his words sank in and he remained silent for a couple of awkward seconds before clearing his throat. It was just as good, however, that Melissa fell on him -- changing the subject.
She'd winded him, but he couldn't help but laugh, "Jesus," he wheezed, hands holding her arms for support, "it's alright." He replied, looking up at her, then gave a chuckle, "I think I'm well enough to fix the sink, don't worry." He had to admit -- he liked this. There wasn't any awkwardness between them anymore, since he'd arrived back in Beacon Hills. Sure, it was still entirely strange being around one another, but it wasn't negative. At least, on his end anyway.
"Are you okay? You didn't hurt yourself did you?"

"Alright," Scott agreed, but it brought up another question, one that had been eating away at him since learning his father was back in town. "Since we’re uh… doing this whole… father slash son bonding thing, can I ask you a question? One that you’ll answer honestly?”
Rafael watched his son for a moment, before giving a nod of his head as confirmation. "Of course, Scott. What is it?"

Melissa shrugged her shoulders and she looked at him with a smile, “Well I’m hoping you don’t start another fire, that is all we need, is the fire trucks coming in and explaining to Scott that you didn’t start a fire in an argument.” she said with a smile. She remembered the incident well and she gazed at him, “How about you just do you best.”
She got out the chicken and she moved over to rinse it off and take off as much fat as she could. Melissa saw her wedding band and engagement ring on the ring holder on the windowsill. She had left it there since she had kicked him out, almost as if holding out hope. She took a dish cloth and she covered them up before she turned on the water and let it run a bit to get it nice and cold before she started to do what she was doing. She listened to what he said about him having trouble sleeping, “Well, there is no use you spending sleepless nights in a rigidity motel, how about you come crash on the couch a bit?” she asked. She knew she had the spare room, but she was waiting to see what Isaac was going to do when Chris decided to return. She wanted to make sure Isaac knew that he was still welcomed.
She turned to look at him when suddenly the faucet and the pipes under the sink burst and she screamed out in shock putting her hands over her face to cover it.
Rafael chuckled at that, “yeah…we don’t need another fire department incident.” There was ready made garlic bread so all he’d have to do is place it on a tray and put it in the oven. No way he could screw that up, right? He got busy with preparing the garlic bread and glanced to her when she suggested that he could stay on the couch. He paused and looked out of the window in front of them, contemplating it. The fact that she actually wanted him to stay in the house meant she trusted him and genuinely wanted him around, right? So, this was a good thing.
He used to have terrible insomnia when they were married and although it’d lightened up, he still tended to have a couple bad nights every so often which resulted in him feeling like a zombie all day at work. “Thanks.” Rafe looked at her out of the corner of his eye and smiled at her, but looked shocked when the water pipe burst. He stepped in front of Melissa and tried to stop it, then promptly got the tools out from under the sink. He laid down on his back and tried to fix the sink, and the water stopped but it needed actually repairing otherwise it’d just break again.
"Dammit, Mel—" Mel? Slip of the tongue, "we’re gonna need some towels. And tape if you got any." Not to mention Rafe was pretty much drenched.
He’s tempted - so tempted - to bite back some snarky remark, because yeah, it seems like work had been more important for a few years now, but he doesn’t really want to argue, so he nods instead.
“Yeah, but- Just- Just don’t turn something down because you feel obligated, or whatever, to stay here now. Me and mom are good.” He nods again, it feels like the right thing to do. “If you plan on living here, you’re going to have to move off the couch. You keep scaring Stiles off.” He offers a small smile, a tentative, unspoken agreement that he will give him another chance.
He sighs. God, he’s really done a number on this kid — he feels guilty, extremely so. He shouldn’t have left in the first place but it seemed like the best option at the time. Clearly, it wasn’t.
"Scott, I don’t feel obligated to stay with you guys. You’re my son and…And hell, I love you kiddo. I’m staying because I want to, not because I have to." He explains, then matches Scott’s smile, "I will. I’m gonna look for a place soon. Besides, I’m not as young as I used to be. My back can’t take it."
