A True Story about Thom Yorke and Cheese

Alright it’s dead up in this radiohead tumblr so I thought I’d offer a personal story.  

Dallas TX, late March of 1998.  Radiohead were on their last leg of the year-long OK Computer tour.  They were tired, they didn’t play that great, and Thom seemed a bit weirded out by the opera theatre style hall and the fact that a lot of people were sitting down during the show (I know…).  “You guys are fucking quiet” is about all he said to us.  But they did debut Nude (then Big Ideas) in the encore.  So that was a big deal.

After the show, about 15 people gathered at the back entranceway.  Slowly, over the course of an hour and a half, the guys ran out one by one and jumped on the waiting tourbus.  Everyone groaned in disappointment.  Local security guys pushed us back and told us to get lost.  

Suddenly some guy in our crowd let out a pitiful scream that carried all the way across the parking lot where the tourbus was warming up.  “THOM!  PLEASE!  ….I LIKE CHEESE!!!”

It made no sense, but everyone laughed and a few seconds later Thom popped out of the tourbus and made his way over to us, shaking his head with a ‘What the hell, man” smile on his face.  He was extremely sweet and said he hoped we liked the show, sorry for not playing longer.  He had snappy red New Balances on and a sad little Jansport backpack.  He’d just showered and changed, and he looked like a little kid wearing his big brother’s clothes.

Moral of the story:  Tell Thom Yorke you love cheese. He’ll come out of his bus to talk to you.
