a bold but necessary take
This is infinitely funnier when you realize the OP is a Hamilton fan who shipped Thomas Jefferson or w/e and responded that he doesn’t count as a real person because he’s dead.
Wait so I can only reply on posts using this account??? But why??? 🤔🤔🤔 This is gonna be a hassle.
An astonishingly useful thread on progressive vs. conservative thought by Jennifer Dziura (text version via ThreadReader):
Wow, that is legitimately horrifying.
I intended to help someone, but it turns out the thing I did kills people. The only moral option is … Doubling down and killing more people.
It all boils down to the different moral foundations people use. For progressives, care, equality and “freedom to” are the main building blocks for deciding whether something is just and moral.
- Does it harm people? - Does it result in inequality? - Does it prevent people from engaging in society?
As long as the proposed idea (behaviour, policy) clears those two hurdles, it’s good to go for progressives. This type of thinking is super compatible with consequentialism. For conservatives, there are more foundations to consider - authority, loyalty, fairness, purity and “liberty from”.
- Does it violate established social hierarchy? (in this approach, hierarchy is good and beneficial). - Does it damage in-group bonds? (again, strong in-group loyalties are considered to be good). - Does it fail to reward contributors and punish wrong-doers? (this is a big one - fairness is about just desserts and consequences for actions, not equality). - Does it breach the sanctity of the body? (this is a complex one, rooted in cultural notions of disgust and body as a temple). - Does it force people to engage in actions they disagree with? (this is the freedom from taxation, PC, and so on).
Libertarians pretty much care only about Liberty from things, usually the government.
This complex set of values means that the same idea or policy will get different moral evaluations. Let’s take a few examples:
Legalising weed: all fine in terms of the progressive foundations. But it breaches purity (the body is a temple) and to an extent interacts with conservative version of fairness by removing a punishment on what they consider to be morally wrong behaviour.
Universal healthcare: again, all clear in progressive values. This policy will help. But in the conservative value set, the policy fails at fairness by ‘rewarding’ non-contributing behaviour (poverty and illness). Let’s not get into a debate over how this is even classified as behaviour rather than a condition. It also breaches freedom from for people who are mostly focused on being free from government, rather than private insurers. The interesting caveat is that purity should favour healthcare - if the body is sacred, we should as a society value accessible ways to keep it healthy and clean. However, because many health conditions have contributing behavioural factors, it can be considered unjust to help people out of the consequences of their actions - even at a net loss to society.
If anyone is interested, Jonathan Haidt writes a lot about the moral foundations, and while he’s often annoyingly centrist in how he presents the ideas, the research is pretty solid.
Thought: I do NOT think that 50% of the world’s billionaires should be women. I think there shouldn’t be any billionaires at all.
So you are saying 0% of the world should be billionaires?
Why shouldn’t their be billionaires? That makes no sense.
Because the existence of billionaires is predicated on the exploitation of human labor and unsustainable environmental harm. That level of wealth hoarding is harmful to economies, as it reduces the amount of money in circulation. No one person, no family, could ever conceivably even SPEND a billion dollars anyway, and it is inherently immoral to accumulate wealth so narrowly while so much of the world lives in abject poverty.
Better then to create a wealth ceiling, a point at which all wealth over a certain point is taxed at or very near 100% to incentivize people to actually spend their money rather than hoard it, stimulating the economy and bettering the lives of far more people. Better even still to create and regulate economic systems that protect workers and the environment in a way that such extreme levels of wealth accumulation aren’t even feasible.
The problem with this is that it reduces the incentive to actually do fiscally well. What’s the point of starting a business if you can’t become wealthy?
There is a very real difference between “reasonably wealthy” and A BILLIONAIRE
No one is saying you shouldn’t have a nice house, we are saying that having multiple really, really ridiculously nice houses while your employees are either homeless or at serious risk of becoming homeless is immoral.
I’ll never understand why this concept is hard for people. I think it’s because they can’t actually fathom how much $1 Billion is.
Seriously.
Let’s say you have a badass job. A great job. You make $100 AN HOUR. You work 10 hours a day ($1000 A DAY), 5 days a week ($5000 a week!!!), every week ($20,000 A MONTH), thats $240,000 Every Year.
It would take you 4,167 years to make a billion dollars.
God dammit
If you were making, for the sake of argument, $25 million a year, you could live a life of extreme luxury. Even then, it would take you forty years of spending none of that money to amass a single billion. There are multi-billionaires out there. No one needs that kind of money.
Currency came into existence to simplify trade. It was meant to make things easier and better for society. When a single person has more than they need, even more than they would need for an extravagant lifestyle, they’d completely unreasonable. Money isn’t meant to be hoarded for status. I honestly think billionaires are addicted to money.
game: has any kind of elemental based fighting system
me: apply pokemon logic
To be fair Pokemon element logic is rooted in normal logic.

do you ever want 95% of a fandom to shut the fuck up
I started looking thru the tags/comments because I was curious to see how many people tagged the jjba fandom (surprisingly none) and then started taking a tally of the most popular fandoms that people want to shut the fuck up:
As of 17,186 notes here are the top specifically mentioned fandoms that people want to shut the fuck up:
Voltron: 66
Steven Universe: 39
Yuri on Ice: 15
Sherlock and Undertale are tied at 13
Hamilton: 11
Supernatural: 10
RWBY: 8
The Adventure Zone, Phandom, and Homestuck are tied at 7
Dr. Who and Overwatch are tied at 6
Kpop in general: 5
I dunno what the voltron fandom did but holy fuck lol
“I dunno what the Voltron fandom did”
as a part of the voltron fandom I can confirm that this is true
(Flash/Epilepsy and Eyestrain Warning! Lot of white flashes..)
Defenders of the Universe
I feel like I need to say something about this…
Everyone hating season 7 for the LGBTQA+ rep is digging themselves deeper into a ditch. Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery are the showrunners of the show yes.
But they don’t have all the say.
Dreamworks is a corporation. This is the capitalist America you live in. They don’t care about why you hated this season. They don’t care that you’re angry because you want better representation. They’re never gonna see that. Harassing the showrunners and voice actors who fought so hard to get representation is not the way to voice your criticism. Find out who the people are at the top of the food chain. Express your concerns to them. Email them. Send them letters. Reach out to THEM. Not the crew of Voltron. And here’s the other thing.
Again. Corporations don’t care about you. They care about making money, how high their ratings are, and when you decide to rate the season with LGBTQA+ rep BADLY, they’re not going to think “well we have to do better”
Nope. They’re going to think “we shouldn’t have gay representation in our cartoons in the future. It won’t do well.”
It’s a showrunners worst nightmare and a corporations “I told you so.”
You’re not doing any good this way. I understand why you’re upset. There are things that could’ve been handled better but what we got is literally what they were allowed to give us. Shiro is great representation. He breaks so many stereotypes. He’s a POC, disabled, neurotypical gay man with a chronic illness BUT HE’S ALSO. THE FORMER LEADER OF VOLTRON. NOW CAPTAIN OF THE ATLAS. SOMEONE EVERYONE LOVES, ADMIRES AND LOOKS UP TO AND TRUSTS WITH NO QUESTION. HE LITERALLY LEADS TEAM EARTH RIGHT NOW.
I for one am so grateful for him. For SHIRO. Our MAIN representation. If you put your anger for the mistreatment of the rest of the queer characters out on the wrong people, on the crew who had the best intentions at heart and worked so hard… on the show and it’s ratings.. it’ll be MUCH harder for there to be more representation like Takashi Shirogane.
Please understand that there are other factors at play. As sad as it sounds, for a brighter future filled with more diversity on screen, we have to treat every queer character we get as a win. We have to be happy with what we get. Because again. Corporations don’t care that we want better rep and no amount of social media backlash is going to change that, they only care about their ratings. But hey… I personally think we got of great rep in Shiro and I loved season 7.
This is so important.
I hope people read this and understand its importance
Hello all, my wallet was stolen. If you can share this post, I’d really appreciate it. I really hope it can be recovered. I’m feeling really bad about this. Please help me :((( There are things in there of sentimental value that I can’t replace and I’d really like them back. It was stolen around 5-5:30pm today, Friday, the 9th of March, in the Mandaluyong-Ortigas Area as I was walking to SM Megamall from Pioneer St. Please share this.
