“Bro where u at we not supposed to be in heree”
always hilarious the lengths mammal moms will go to to retrieve a nearly-grown child from a situation of their own making. get back here
new year's exclusive
“Perhaps you have forgotten. That’s one of the great problems of our modern world, you know. Forgetting. The victim never forgets. Ask an Irishman what the English did to him in 1920 and he’ll tell you the day of the month and the time and the name of every man they killed. Ask an Iranian what the English did to him in 1953 and he’ll tell you. His child will tell you. His grandchild will tell you. And when he has one, his great-grandchild will tell you too. But ask an Englishman—” He flung up his hands in mock ignorance. “If he ever knew, he has forgotten. ‘Move on!’ you tell us. ‘Move on! Forget what we’ve done to you. Tomorrow’s another day!’ But it isn’t, Mr. Brue.” He still had Brue’s hand. “Tomorrow was created yesterday, you see. That is the point I was making to you. And by the day before yesterday, too. To ignore history is to ignore the wolf at the door.”
- A Most Wanted Man, John le Carré
Is using generative AI in a professional and/or academic setting always plagiarism
* yes it’s alway plagiarism
* it’s plagiarism in academics but not in a workspace
* it’s plagiarism in a workplace but not in academia
* its plagiarism if you didn’t get your boss/professor’s approval beforehand
* it’s plagiarism if you use it for the majority of the work
* it’s plagiarism if you don’t label it as AI
* it’s plagiarism if you use it for the final draft (brainstorming/first drafts okay)
* it’s plagiarism if you use it for the first draft and rewrite it yourself
* it’s plagiarism if you use it for research
* it’s complicated
* no, it’s not plagiarism if you use generative AI

happy pride from the trans flag on the floor in deep space nine
I always say: Star Trek: Deep Space 9 started in 1993 and ran until 1999, and the trans pride flag was designed (by Monica Helms) in 1999.
The carpets on Deep Space Nine aren't Trans Pride flag colored: the trans pride flag is Deep Space Nine carpet colored.
Forgot to show this, but I painted this for my art final. Love Jubilee to the stars and beyond, need to draw her more
Since 2021, fewer Americans have said that gay or lesbian relations and changing one's gender are morally acceptable and have favored legal
Between 1996 and 2022, the percentage of U.S. adults in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage increased by 44 points, from 27% to 71%. In 2024, the figure dipped to 69%, and it has shown a marginal decline each year since. Gallup first asked about the morality of same-sex relations in 2001, when 40% said they were morally acceptable. By 2022, 71% held that view, before a sharp drop to 64% in 2023, holding at about that level during the past three years. When Gallup first asked about changing one's gender in 2021, 46% found it morally acceptable, and 51% found it morally wrong. Today, those numbers stand at 38% and 57%, respectively. Most of the recent changes in LGBTQ+ attitudes have occurred among Republicans. For example, in 2021 and 2022, 55% of Republicans said they favored legal same-sex marriage, but today, the figure is 37%. Among independents, support has dropped six points, to 67%, while Democrats’ views are the same as in 2022 (87% in favor).
There is a decline in support for queer people, but it's largely down to the MAGA crowd.
tech companies appear to be labouring under the delusion that users who click on the wrong program by accident because the button's placement has changed will naturally find themselves using and enjoying whatever feature they moved into the previous location of that program's button
i suspect the number of people in the world who go "ah, what the hell. i've accidentally opened the window for this new feature. i suppose i might as well stop what i'm doing to try this out rather than just figure out where they've hidden the old button and go do the thing i was already doing" is roughly n=2 and that those 2 people are the CEOs of microsoft and google respectively
the reason people think LLMs are conscious is because they use natural language. we evolved to understand speech and to specifically understand speech as representative of the internal world of the speaker. the only creatures we spoke to were conscious. we evolved specifically to have greater empathy and kinship via conversation - the main way people come to understand each other and feel closer is still just talking.
all that has happened to dorkins is he has fallen into an evolutionary trap. the exact same trap that those tiktokers who believe their dog can talk to them by jumping on buttons have fallen into. because the buttons create a simulacrum of language, however crude, the listening brain itself constructs a simulacrum of the internal world of the perceived speaker. Because that is what it already evolved to do with the only available speakers in its evolutionary history!!!!!!
the thing that bewilders me about a lot of fantasy readers is that they read about settings and plots featuring imperialism, war, and slavery and then call the inclusion of violence, abuse, and sexual exploitation "edgy" and "gratuitous" and it's like what did you think was happening. why were you under the impression that you were going to get a cozy story about fascism or something. far be it from me to criticize anyone for not wanting to read about torture in their spare time, and there are certainly cases where heavy subjects are poorly executed, but is it not equally insulting to sanitize them for a feel-good adventure.. like no one put a gun to your head and forced you to give your fantasy novel an enslaved protagonist. sometimes writing is supposed to make you feel bad
