being medically unremarkable is a good thing
having chronic fatigue is like wow im so excited to wake up at 7 and nap at 10 and start my day at 2 :)
There are no disabilities which are raised above ableism. The person in the wheelchair, the autistic person, the person with schizophrenia and the person with an invisible chronic illness may all experience society's ableism in different ways, but none of them can expect to avoid it. So the "you wouldn't say X to Y" advocacy needs to retire yesterday. They say all kinds of ableist shit to all of us and it's time to try out some actual solidarity instead of arguing about who has it slightly worse
She likes watching the swirly toilet water, not even hiding the flusher can stop her

sorry i cant hang out i forgot how to mimic human like behaviour

[ID: Tweet by @JamesSowka 12/2/23 âhaving none of my progressive friends care about Covid is the same as waking up and all of a sudden none of them care about climate change, or none of them care about abortion rights. How to carry things when you need your hands for mobility. đâĽď¸
yelling into the mirror: i will no longer feel guilty about my limitations !!!!!!! i will no longer feel guilty about my limitations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look I know radically accepting rest and a lack of productivity is the only way to fix our broken ass society, but as a physically disabled person with a chronic illness, i hate you rest. I hate you recovery. I hate you ten hours of sleep a night. I hate you sitting in bed. I hate you never having time to do anything because I'm always resting. I hate you always being tired. I hate you not being able to sleep if I overdo it. I hate you having to rest after literally just walking to the bathroom. I hate you chronic illness and I hate you medical neglect and I hate you inaccessible society and I hate you ableism and I hate hate hate it all
I can't believe people would slander ocean sunfish for having a lot of parasites. Uh, hello?? Every animal in nature has parasites dipshit, it came free with living in an ecosystem
RIIIIIGHT TToTT I mean. I guess you can dislike the ocean sunfish, it's not like I can do anything about it lmao. But it seems like a lot of the reasons some people dislike them are based on twisting the truth or are just silly, the same criteria apply to so many other fish no one would ever make fun of (you can of course be a hater for the sake of being a hater, the sunfish won't know and they won't care). I only brought up the parasite point because that's the one I never see anyone talk about but some of the other reasons why people dislike ocean sunfish are that they are largely immobile, they're often stuck at the surface of the water, and that they're awful at staying alive. None of that is true! They're prolific hunters that hunt for squid, small fish and jellies in the mesopelagic zone, they can dive into the deep dark waters below several times a day! Their lack of a swim bladder allows them to seamlessly travel between these great depths without bursting, their body being neither positively nor negatively buoyant so they alter their depth via swimming using their enlarged, muscular dorsal and anal fin. They're slow, sure, but the fastest fish in the ocean (marlins, billfish, sharks) have heating mechanisms in their muscles to allow them to stay warm and therefore faster in the cold water. Sunfish have no such luxury! They instead make do with great innovation, basking on the surface to warm their bodies up between each dive. This tactic is intentional and allows them to live this very demanding but rewarding lifestyle! And it's not like they're horribly slow either... they can leap out of the water when evading predators!
And then of course there's the thing about sunfish only being good for parasites. Which... damn, if you only value animals for what they provide, there's the fact that sunfish bring back nutrients from the lower levels of the ocean back to the epipelagic zone. If you truly see no point to an animal if it has no use, hmph. I don't really understand where these sorts of opinions of sunfish being inferior and useless come from (pretty privilege?), but I can personally remember first hearing of this opinion in an old TikTok video of a young man claiming many of the points I mentioned above: immobile, poor swimmers, slow, parasite-infested, stuck at the mercy of the current, etcetera. I am not sure where even this came from?? Ehh... well. Debunking one fish myth at a time, I suppose...
Anyway, I felt passionate about sunfish to write all this just now in the heat of the moment, enjoy!
I like to tease sunfish for their funny, and voluntary, decision to switch around the steering and propulsion functionalies of their fins. I would kill for sunfish.
Thatâs what makes them even funnier and more unique! They âdecidedâ that the caudal fin was actually useless and got rid of it, instead focusing their muscles on the dorsal and anal fin. They went through the same flipper innovation process as dolphins or sea turtles, just sideways! Sideways sea turtlesâŚ
It may come as a surprise to some when they hear that the ocean sunfishesâ closest relatives are pufferfishes, triggerfishes, porcupinefishes and other members of Tetraodontiformes. This becomes much more apparent when you realise that these fishes can use their dorsal and anal fins for propulsion too! The sunfish just took it to a new level and got rid of the caudal fin entirely :D
I adore them for being the oceanâs little freaks. I remember seeing one at (iirc) the Monterey bay aquarium one time and I laughed excitedly like a maniac for so long I think I began worrying the other visitors.
They're massive freaks of the ocean and I love that for them.
fucks me up that by total coincidence the sun and moonâs size difference is exactly matched to their difference in distance from us, thus making our beautiful total solar eclipses where you can see the silver threads of the sunâs corona possible because the moon just covers the sun completely
The stars (literally) aligned just right for this experience to be possible. Itâs likely that aliens donât have this
The moon is also absolutely gargantuan by moon standards. It isnât the largest moon in the solar system, but it is BY FAR the largest in comparison with its planet. Ganymede is the largest satellite of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system. Its diameter is only about 3.8% of Jupiterâs. Titanâs radius is 4.4% of Saturnâs. Callisto and Io are the next largest in the neighborhood, with 3.4% and 2.6% the diameter of Jupiter respectively.
Our moon is number 5. It is smaller in direct comparison to the above moons. The diameter of the moon is 3475 km. That is a full 27% of the diameter of the Earth. More than a quarter. Thatâs ridiculous. Itâs unheard of. The universe is large enough that the word unique probably doesnât mean a lot, but this might be about as close as you get.
This has had a huge impact on our planet. Other things aliens might not have are significant tides. One of Marsâs dumpy little potatoes wouldnât be able to move oceans the way our moon does.
Our moon has also stabilized our axis to a massive degree. Without her up there our axis would wobble all over the place and our climate would be far more chaotic. Aliens might not be quite so lucky.
I guess what I am really trying to say is that the moon is extremely cool. I like the moon.
Just want to add that the reason we have such a large moon is because a whole planet crashed into proto-Earth. Theia (the planet) and Earth got so superheated by this collision that their component cores fused and the impact jettisoned a lot of material into space. That massive amount of jettisoned material became our moon. So Earth and the moon have very similar composition. This does not seem to be a common method of lunar formation.
what if the answer to the fermi paradox is that life cant exist without a moon like luna
I got a serious beef with the Fermi paradox. There is no Fermi paradox. There stopped being a Fermi paradox once the first radio telescopes went up, and we began to get a true sense of the sheer scale of the universe.
Space is big, empty, and loud. Sunspots can cause enough interference to affect global communications. Weâre not even loud enough to talk over our own sun. On our own planet. We can barely communicate with Voyager, and we know exactly where it is and what its signal sounds like.
The Fermi paradox is like doubting the existence of Belfast, because you stood on a windy New York beach shouting towards it and didnât get an answer.
@xkcd-for-that
I am so excited about the Kepler mission. This is the second most important thing our species has ever done, right behind developing the concept of delivery pizza.
in my dream world that i live in sometimes we stop saying things like âNOBODY is gross or dirty!!!â And start saying things like âbeing gross or dirty isnât a moral flaw or failingâ
not brushing your teeth for months at a time is gross. Itâs not a moral failing and does not make you a bad person.
being told I wasnât gross online by posts by well meaning people when i was a very depressed young teenager for not showering for weeks did not make me feel better, because i felt gross and dirty. What would have actually helped was engaging with the reality (that it was a little gross, what i was doing/unable to do) but that it did not make me a bad person undeserving of help. âYoure not gross and (so) you deserve help!â Okay well i feel gross. This cant be aimed at me.
it also goes against your own brain- everyone thinks things are gross sometimes & to say Nothing is gross rings false. You can be gross and be loveable. Grossness is not failure. Grossness is not a flaw. Gross is not a moral thing. Itâs just what it is and has no effect on personhood and i think preaching âhaving things about you that are dirty or gross does not make someone lesser or unworthy or failedâ over ânothing is grossâ will carry us a lot further
works for me, anyways. maybe it wonât for you, but itâs helped me a lot more than anything else has.
if you are sick, i don't give a shit if it's just a cold, wear a FUCKING MASK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brit on brit violence
Heâs right and my reaction would have been stronger
That âten seconds, love?â was bordering on homicidal
Ok so at this point I've had two people roll up to me in manual wheelchairs, well, one of them was somebody pushing somebody who was nonverbal at the time, but it still counts. They asked me why I had zip ties around my tires.
It's winter where I'm living and we have really bad snow. And the snow plow people are really bad at their jobs probably because there aren't snow plow people who clean sidewalks. As a solution I got to thinking about how I could increase the traction on my wheels. And the most redneck thing I could think of was taking a bunch of zip ties and tying them around my wheels. They last surprisingly long, and work surprisingly well. It's basically the same premise as chains for your tires during the winter.
I chose to space them out pretty evenly so there's about one for every spoke. You could probably do more or less depending on how many you want and how much traction you get but I wouldn't go more than three per spoke. I realize that it's a bit later in the winter, and I probably should have made a post about this sooner, but I came up with it about a week ago. So please share this, even if you're not disabled, because there are tons of people I know who are stuck in their houses because they can't get around in the snow. A pack of zip ties costs about $5, which compared to $200 knobby snow tires is a big save, and if you want to invest you could get colored zip ties.
Sharing for accessibility
Oh fuck yes. Thank you all the abled people between op and me this is exactly what I needed to see đ
ooh sweet, thanks for the tip
(for anyone using their chair both indoors and outside, highly recommend wheelchair 'slippers'/wheel socks like these so you don't tear up wood/vinyl/linoleum flooring with the zip ties!)
! This is fucking amazing and I love it!!!
it is punk as fuck to be in such bad pain and to be so fatigued and yet, still be alive. fuck yeah iâm proud of you.
