"Can't say I've ever met a cowgirl before. I meant I've met a girl who's got cow horns but that isn't the same." Still if anyone would be impressed by that it'd probably be the Captain. And if they were here they could be having this conversation rather then Lich. But having an occasional bout of being nice wouldn't hurt anyone.
...Probably.
"Lemme think there was that flaming horse the lightning one and that other freaky one. None of them look like yours though if that makes ya' feel any special. But I doubt there are that many of them running around here in the first place."

Maria scoffs back a laugh. "Nah, that ain't the same thing at all. The only folks with horns where I'm from are demons, but around these parts, it's anyone's game. Hell, maybe there is a cowgirl like that."
At the mention of a flaming horse, Maria takes on a more serious look.
"Those horses wouldn't happen to have riders by the names of Pestilence, War, Famine, or Death, would they?"
This wouldn't be the first time she's heard about another version of War, if that turns out to be the case.
UFO50: RAIL HEIST
"They are a strange family...an abandon mine is their home. But there's word that the next train could be their ticket to a new life. A RICH new life..." I had the absolute pleasure in being able to take part in Emilio's UFO50 Art Collab Project. Featuring over a hundred different artists and their take on MossMouth's UFO50. To which it's their one year anniversary today! Here is my contribution featuring the tricky train robbers, Dodge, Brand, and Maria for the Game 28, Rail Heist! I HIGHLY recommend you come take a look at the entire Collab if you can. The amount of work and talent from everybody in the project is gorgeous. This was so much fun. ( I will update this when it becomes available on more platforms! )

"Hey. So, uh..."
It's uncomfortable, not knowing how to break the ice. Maria just finished making coffee on the stovetop, and she offers Balduran a cup.
"Don't remember if we got properly introduced. I'm Maria. I'm... a friend of Will's. I think I remember you from that whole... Y'know, that whole thing with the ghosts."
"He told me about the two of you. I'm... real sorry that he's gone. If you want to talk about it, I'm right here. And if not, well... We can just sit and drink coffee."

It looks like they saved her the trouble of packing. Now, the only problem is...
The friend who she was planning to stay with isn't here anymore.
"..."
She guesses that's just the way it goes. Maybe Balduran won't mind the company. And if he does, then she'll just have to mosey on.
Nulla isn't sure what to call the being that 'detaches' from the blue creature, but they approach with a strange item in hand. She sees that the stranger has extended her arm out to give her this strange item.
"What is it?" She asks. It's hard to tell if she means the horse or if she means the bandage. Regardless, shaky hands retrieve the bandage. She isn't entirely sure what she should do with it. The woman says it's for her ankle, and it looks like a ribbon. A boring kind of ribbon. That much she knows. She's wrapped gifts before. And, awkwardly and with uncertainty, that's how she wraps the swollen ankle.
Maria blinks. "They're bandages. You wrap 'em around your wound, and..."
"Yeah, like that. You got it," she says. Maria gives the woman some time to wrap her wound, then offers her a hand to help her back on her feet.
"Sorry for startling you. My name's Maria, and he's Mister Blue. How about yourself?" This woman doesn't look like one of the locals, so Maria figures that she just showed up.

A creature she's never seen before and that's why she started RUNNING like she was being chased by some monster. She sprains her ankle in the process, which results in her dropping to the ground and wincing in pain.
Already, her ankle is beginning to swell, but she looks up at the massive blue monster with fear.
"Don't---"
hurt me.
Maria, on horseback, is just as alarmed by the woman's reaction as she is by Mister Blue, and even her horse is a little scared by her running away and falling down.
"Hey, calm down! He's not gonna hurt you. And neither am I. Lemme just... One sec."
She dismounts her horse, then pulls out a roll of bandages that she offers to the woman.
"Here," she says. "For your ankle. You oughta be more careful."
Judging by her reaction, she must be terrified of horses, and it looks like she could use a good pair of boots.

He's interested to know about Camilla and how she was able to obtain a dragon as a companion!
At the mention of other dragons being locals, though, he's thinking...Surely he'd have seen one if they were a local? He'll have to explore.
Back to the talk of their goddesses, he nods, understanding what she means. "You do not have to be religious to pay your respect and gratitude for what your goddess has done." That's what he believed, anyway. They appreciated it regardless. "Your goddess sounds like a wonderful one. Aiding those in need." Not many higher beings were like that, he's learned.
"Liraelith saved my life. I devoted myself to her in return. I would have it no other way."
"Hm."
Maria turns her head down for a moment. Though she said she may not be religious herself, it'd be wrong for her not to acknowledge the importance of the goddess to those that she knows.
"Mescalita... She was real important to someone I know. A couple folks, actually. Like Lily and Umbra... But most folks in Lonestar, they worshipped this god called Biggan. Turns out, he was leading us down the wrong path."
"They blamed her, that woman... Lily O'Mule. Claimed she was a follower of the Dark Lord Malus. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Lily loved humanity more than anyone else."
She turns her head up, making eye contact with the man. There's a fierce determination behind her eyes.
"I hope your Liraelith is like Mescalita. If she saved your life, then... maybe she is."
"But me, I believe in humanity first and foremost. That, and..."
She gives Mister Blue a pat. The horse whinnies happily, glad to be included.

With her horse in semi-capable hands, Maria's off to venture through the keep. She meets a young man who she hasn't met before, though his manner of dress reminds her of one of her friends.
Once they're past the sitting room, the sight before them is very strange. It's like they're standing at the bottom of the ocean, only the waters are parted to allow a straight path forward. All manner of sea creatures swim within the water, along with something very large and with very sharp teeth.
Maria walks forward, amazed by the water, only to freeze in her tracks when she notices the beast. She holds out an arm to keep her companion from moving forward, then tentatively reaches for the rifle on her back.
"We'd better tread carefully here. You know any way to ward it off?"
Her new partner looks like someone who might know a magic trick or two.

Sephiroth made a non-committal sound. He liked working at the archive fine enough. He hasn't really talked much with any of his coworkers, but that was fine with him.
"It's okay," He said softly, avoiding eye contact with Maria. He kept thinking back on how he had originally snapped at her. Would she be upset at him if she knew the bad things he did? The hypocritical things he spewed at her?
"Everyone is nice." He slid off Mister Blue and gave him another pat. His mood had dropped so quickly and he only had himself to blame. Talking about his real home brought back bitter memories and he didn't want to burden Maria. "I should get back to work."
Shoot. She shouldn't have reacted like that. She bets the kid thinks that she's mad at him, and not at whatever that Shinra place is for forcing him into a life of military work.
"Wait, Seph..."
She holds out a hand, but stops herself from putting it on his shoulder. Keeping the kid from his civilian life is just going to scare him away.
Sucking air through her teeth, Maria sighs. "Well, if you really gotta get going, do what you gotta do," she says.
"I ain't mad at you, I'm just gonna say that. We can talk about this later, okay?"
now that's something you don't see everyday - or ever, for that matter, not even in wild dreams he'd possibly have after drinking a little too much for his own limit. a blue horse strutting through the sky at an altitude taller than any building could very easily be a proverb like when pigs fly and whatever else, but instead, it's the sight that greets him as he steps outside.
" what? " he says instead of a greeting, but then shakes his head, as if physically ridding himself of his surprise upon seeing her. " oh, um, hi darling, how are you! and how are you, mister blue? "
he reaches forward to hold his hand out in front of the horse, holding it there until he thinks he has mister blue's permission to pet him, like one would with a cat. " you got here early, maria, balduran's not home yet. i think he's at the market, if i'm not wrong, but you'll meet him when he gets back, i promise. "
leaning away, he tilts his head towards the entrance. " c'mon, lets go inside. unless you wanna take a look at the yards first, right? "
the grounds surrounding the house were as expansive as will had claimed, lined by rose bushes but otherwise free. freshly cut grass is splayed around the building, as if treated recently. looks like the poet took care of its appearance for maria's arrival, it's safe to assume. " whatever you prefer. "
Mister Blue, familiar with Will by this point, sniffs the hand when it's offered to him, then licks it clean for any traces of food. Maria can't help but laugh at him.
"Me? I'm swell. Don't think I told you about Mister Blue's special ability, huh?" It's the only good thing that came out of his stay with that famished horseman.
She looks over the yard when Will points it out. While there's plenty of grass for Blue to eat at his leisure, Maria makes a face when she sees the rose bushes. Though beautiful, someone else might just see them as food.
"Is it gonna be okay if I leave him out by the roses, or have you got a place I can keep him?" she asks.
Mister Blue looks up. While he's usually tied by a post or a bike rack or the like whenever Maria goes into a building, he gets the sense that this is a more permanent residence, and he's become too used to being welcomed indoors.
"A Scoria Worm sounds - awful. Then again, I can't really stand worms and the like - Enki's good with them, but eugh."
He gives a shudder as he says it, though his voice cants in a little bit of a laugh.
"I can't say the dungeons were full of much personality per say, at least until we got to the city and started dealing with folks like Francois. Unless you count that damn crow chasing us with a purpose."
Maria notes the name "Enki" for later. Must be a friend of his, she thinks.
"Yeah? Well, this was a really big one. Lived in lava, about as long as a city block here. We had to call it out by blowin' into a devil horn, then pumped it full of lead until the lava went away."
"You had to deal with Frankards? Damn, that's rough." He has her sympathies. At least Cecil's not bad.
"How's a crow follow you all the way through a dungeon?" That must be one determined bird, Maria thinks to herself, but maybe it's like a bird in the same way the Scoria Worm is like an earthworm.
"There are more dragons here ?" He asks, a little surprised. He hasn't seen a dragon since his arrival. The only one he's seen was Moondust!
"Ah, the goddess of the moon--her name is Liraelith. I am one of her followers. But a Cactus goddess, what is she like?"
"Sure are. Her name's Camilla, and I don't think her dragon has a name. There's a couple other dragons I know, but I'm pretty sure they're locals here."
"Liraelith, huh?"
If this man is a demon, then he's definitely not from any Hell that Maria knows. She narrows her eyes and rubs her chin, giving herself time to think it over.
"Right. Well, her name's Mescalita. I don't know much about her, to be honest, but she did give us some valuable insight back when we were stuck in..."
She bobs her head downwards.
"You know."
"So I guess we owe her that much, but between you and me, I'm not all that religious. How about yourself? What made you decide to start following Liraelith?" she asks.
...She was completely lost. Or, well, it felt like she was. Ever since finding herself in this place, Aurora had been wandering around; asking questions to those who had picked up on her unease. Those questions eventually led her to her new "home", the ward by the name of Archimedes. That solved one dilemma, while leaving her with many others.
She hadn't really investigated the device she had been given any further. It was gently gripped in one hand while the other still clutched onto the dagger. Previously crystal, now wooden in origin. It's better that way. It would be incapable of harm. On top of that, she couldn't help but wonder if she was the only one here. Surely this place wouldn't just take people and leave them here all on their own... right?
Aurora didn't think she would like that. Not at all.
A lot of people seemed to find their way around using the devices, she had glimpsed several people looking down at them before carrying on with their day. Perhaps she should consider doing the same. Maybe it was an archive of information, one that was easily carried? She wouldn't know unless she asked someone. So, upon drawing her gaze to the first person that took her interest, she took several quiet steps towards them. Whether they noticed her approach or not was unclear, but she made herself known with a tentatively raised hand; the one clutching the mobile device.
"Excuse me. Could I please have a moment of your time? I would like to inquire on what this device is capable of. Is it used to find things?"

Maria's standing next to Mister Blue and checking something on her phone. When she sees someone approaching, she turns her head, then puts her phone away for now.
By the looks of it, she's another newcomer who's got no idea how cell phones work, just like Maria when she first got here. She's had several months to adjust.
"That depends," Maria says. "What exactly are you trying to find?"
Knowing this place, she fully expects the kid's answer to be either a way out or a loved one.
虫 If a person in a strange hat hadn't been interesting enough, a horse dressed in the same way certainly tickled Shinobu's fancy. Convenient as it would have been for demon slayers to use mounts themselves, demons tended to spook them too easily. Hopefully this well-dressed horse wouldn't need to worry about any of that!
"Clothes for animals, how cute!" it gave her the inspiration to consider seeking out something for her crow to wear. En might not appreciate it if it made it so that it was more difficult to fly, however. "And aren't you a pretty horse? Yes you are!" The young woman kept herself a little bit farther away, giving the horse more space to move towards her if necessary.
"If they tailor costumes for animals though, wouldn't it be a bit forward of me to ask them to make something for a human? That sounds like quite the specific niche!" Maybe she was overthinking it just a tad.
Mister Blue looks away bashfully, seemingly embarrassed by all of the attention. He seems friendly enough, though he usually doesn't approach strangers unless they have food.
Maria chuckles, ruffles her horse's mane, then gives the teenager a funny look.
"Oh, uh. They tailor clothing for people. This getup is just... It was a favor from the owner. Pretty sure he could make somethin' similar for yourself. This big hat's pretty useful in the sun."
