This and another piece were going to be a Mermay/accidental AAPI Heritage month? set, but it turns out when you haven't painted for a while and you're rushing through things it gets real easy to accidentally lose control of red paint and have it mix with green. That and genAI slop has made it all but impossible to find good reference images for koi ponds. But! The irises haven't left us just yet, and Deltarune chapter 5 just came out so a Japanese theme is now in vogue, and you can always come back to a hobby that brings you joy.

This mermaid is specifically a maiko, or apprentice geisha. I've been doing some research on them for another project long in the pipeline (Pokemon-themed, if you know you know.) I tried my best, but I'm neither Japanese nor a geisha, so I apologize if there are some inaccurate details. I've also been a bit wary to do mermaids with too much makeup because...well, it's gonna wash off, right???

Hey guys, let's pretend that this isn't the first fully rendered piece of digital artwork I've ever posted, okay?

Based on the work "High Plain, Lo Mein" by Kym Day, who is truly one of the Western artists of all time. Seriously, all of her work would constitute a top tier tumblr shitpost, please go check her out and support her if you can. This was mostly done as an excuse to test out different tools on CSP, especially the thick oil brush, but I'm kind of stupidly proud how it turned out.
