How do you deal with hecklers?
My wife and I were out for our walk after work tonight, you know, trying to get fit and healthy, when a car full of teenagers got themselves stuck. We looked over in their direction to see if they were going to need help getting out when the door opened and one of them yelled something about us taking a picture followed by something about us being fat and ugly. So here we are, 33 years old, instantly thrown back onto the playground fighting all of the bullying and discrimination all over again from the kids at school. How do we ignore that and go back again tomorrow? I know they probably won’t be there again, but what if they are? How do we move forward from this?
Aaaand I'm the wife. Yep, that was fun. I cried all the way back to the car, and I've been on the verge of it most of the evening. I'm sad, and discouraged, and angry all at once. We try so hard, and we'd had such an awesome day - Nerd Fitness Recruit Workout this morning before work, walk after work, salads for lunch, healthy dinner planned for tonight - and then some ridiculously insecure bitch decides she has to verbally attack two complete strangers for absolutely no reason. I feel like an old lady, but all I can think is "When I was a teenager, I never would have insulted a grown-up like that. I was taught to respect adults" (although, come to think of it, I never deliberately insulted anyone, not just adults). I am trying not to feel like it's all hopeless - hell, I even tried speed-skating yesterday, that's the second new team sport I've tried and loved this year - I am trying to be better. We both are. J talked me down even though I know he was hurting just as badly, and I'm feeling a bit better, but it's not right that it happened at all. I'm sorry. I'm so scattered. This whole thing triggered some serious issues with me tonight.
