No spoilers but, I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE. For more than the obvious reasons.
It is such a good litmus test. This is the kind of movie that I'll show anyone I trust, just to see who they side with- Nikki or Bear. And any Bear apologists? Well... Safe to say they won't be a part of my life. π
And with the recent rise of reaction videos with the movie (no, I am not going to name names), it is so fascinating to see which reactors are Bear apologists. Some really do surprise you, but honestly, it made me realise which reactors are basically a walking red flag. π
Thinking about how despite hating harry with all his might, Brian ended up accidentally doing the same thing Harry did: see Dexter only for the monster they WANTED him to be, not the person he truly was
Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.

So, I'm finally writing down my thoughts about her after finishing the OG series, New Blood and Original Sin. (Still haven't touched Resurrection yet).
But yeah, SPOILER WARNING BELOW β οΈβ οΈβ οΈππ»
The existence of Evelyn Vogel as a character is what I'd like to call a Schrodinger's Cat Character.
What I mean by that is, she's the type of character that you don't know anything about, unless you put your own meaning into it.
The basic facts we know about her-
1. She is a psychiatrist whose life long study has been on psychopathy and she views psychopathic individuals as necessary tools to society, almost seeing them as the next step in human evolution. There's something scientific in the way she worships the idea, and devotes her time and energy to become a messiah of that message. And as much as she's a messiah of her own propaganda, she's also scared of psychopathic individuals, and she does her best not to show it.
2. She's not a sympathetic character. She's a villain. She may not kill people directly, but she has a hand in making serial killers out of her therapy.
3. Her views of empathy are skewed enough that she deems it unnecessary, as if she has to constantly remind herself that empathy is weakness. It's what translated to how she treated her son when he was growing up.
4. Her son is Oliver Saxon, or Daniel Vogel, whom she institutionalised the moment she realised that he has psychopathic tendencies. And erased every existence of Daniel ever being born or being her son. We do not know anything about her husband or Daniel's father.
5. Vogel also had a hand in helping Harry (again, father of the year everyone) make the Code and diagnosing Dexter when he was still a child. Granted her doesn't remember her, but Harry went to Vogel for counsel and guidance.
6. She views Dexter as her 'second son' or the son that she has successfully engineered, which is something Daniel saw and got really jealous over, with Vogel even hyping him up as a 'god'. Dexter may choose to ignore the red flags of Vogel (probably because she validated his ego and got Debra to talk to him), but I see through her manipulative bullshit.
...
Her existence pulls up a few loose ends that I'd like to address and get answers for-
1. Who recommended Dr. Vogel to Harry and when?
2. Did Vogel know about the existence of Brian Moser? I'm sure Harry must have at least told her about it. Did Vogel ever seek out Brian's existence?
3. In Original Sin, we see Harry watch Dexter follow the Code for the first time... Does he ever reach out to Vogel afterwards? Did he ever keep in touch with her?
4. Vogel mentions that she wasn't able to attend Harry's funeral because she was overseas... But that doesn't explain the lack of communication over the years since Harry's death and why she never reached out to Dexter or Debra. But in the same sentence, she says she has been watching Dexter and is proud of him for following the Code?
5. So, if she was keeping an eye out on Dexter through those years, knowing that he's a vigilante serial killer... That same time, Brian was stalking and watching Dexter as well... I assume she at least still knew that someone was stalking Dexter even if Harry never mentioned Brian?
6. I'm also slightly surprised that she never took any interest in baby Harrison. Because she should have? Knowing about Dexter's origin and how Harrison's origin mirrors Dexter's? Especially after Trinity, because she's introduced way after Trinity.
I don't know, the existence of Vogel as this psychiatrist who dedicated her life's work to psychopathy and had an entire obsession over shaping Dexter and seeing as a 'second son' leaves so many questions unanswered...
And the way she treated Daniel is why he snapped and she got scared enough to try and placate him before dying by his hands... She feels like an unexplored canon event.
And honestly, if they do revive Original Sin, I hope we get at least some answers...
Anyways, those are my thoughts... And I'll ponder over them... For a while...
...
ETA: I forgot to add one more thing i.e the introduction of Vogel in the series.
She quite literally, comes out of nowhere. It's only when Oliver strikes, leaving a piece of someone's brain at her doorstep as a gift does she reach out to.... Matthews. Yes, the same guy who was Harry's best friend, and always preferred the Morgan's over anyone else.
So, that begs more question -
1. How did Matthews come into the position that he is? Did it happen after Aaron Spencer? (From Original Sin)
2. It is heavily implied that Matthews and Harry shared each other's secrets. What those secrets are, we don't know. But through small hints, we can tell that Matthew has an inkling of Dexter's darker tendencies and in a way approved of them, though he didn't say it outright because he had made some sort of promise to Harry. (This observation goes right over Dexter's head). So that begs the question - Did Matthews know that Harry reached out to Vogel? Was Matthews aware of Vogel? How did Matthews and Vogel even become friends enough to exchange contacts? Did Vogel use Matthews as one of her connections who was keeping an eye on Dexter's activities?
Because, if you really think about it, Matthews would not have brought in Vogel to psychologically dismantle the work of Oliver (before anyone knew he was the Brain Surgeon) if he knew that Vogel kept tight lipped about having a psychopathic son.
Her introduction genuinely doesn't make sense and accidentally becomes a huge canon event that no one has answers for.
1: No one recommended Harry to Vogel, they met working. 8x02
2: no mention of Brian in s8 - my personal opinion is that she did know but did not reach out if you give original sin canon any merit - and well, i think she has a thing for psychopaths that aren't in the hospital bc she has a track history of ignoring them when they are- her son LOL
3: Yes! Harry stayed seeing Vogel after Nurse Mary, timeline unclear but Iβm going to guess around a month? Because the last session Harry has with her is talking about the Juan Ryness kill in 2x10 and then a couple days later he kills himself.
4: She moved after Harryβs death and respected Harryβs wishes to not reach out to Dexter + Vogel thought he was a full blown βpsychopathβ that didnβt need reassurance or someone to talk to. 8x02
5: She only kept her eye on Bay Harbor Butcher in the news.
6: Interesting! Iβve never considered this element or idea! I wonder if she wanted to wait to see when Harrison was around Dexterβs age - 10.
Matthewβs -
1: The timeline for Matthewβs career is not detailed but with the implication that Matthews met Vogel either before or at the same time as Harry (1981 - Dexter at age 10) and Matthews was Captain which is the role above lieutenant- Spencer. Bc OS takes place in 1991.
2: Matthewβs and Vogel met working cases together. 8x01

SPOILER WARNING BELOW β οΈβ οΈβ οΈ
ACT 1: INTRODUCTION
The story of Hannah is pretty fucking weird. What we know so far-
1. She grew up in an abusive environment.
2. She was involved in crimes with Wayne Randall, through either grooming or manipulation OR was an active participant.
3. She is a poisoner.
4. She is able to get into a normal society and live a normal life, get married as well, had a miscarriage and her ex husband died. We don't expand on this.
5. Becomes Dexter's love interest.
6. Becomes Harrison's new adoptive stepmom.
7. Was caught by Debra (poisoned Debra too but sure let's gloss over that), turned in by Dexter, escaped jail with the help of her friend Arlene Shram.
8. Married a wealthy tycoon named Miles Castner and killed him in self defense after escaping from jail and Dexter helps dispose of the body.
9. Is one of the people who was in Dexter's kill table before being let go because she understands Dexter's darkness and he realises that she kills the 'bad guys'.
10. One of the most confusing characters of all time.
...
Act 2- Rewrite
Okay, here's my two cents on what they (should) have done with her character -
HANNAH SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT A VILLIAN.
Now, hear me out. Lemme cook. π€π»
Lets start from the end of Season 7 where she escapes from jail and leaves a Black Dahlia as a threat and warning at Dexter's door. There should have been a follow up over that, and Dexter should have been keeping an eye out.
Let Hannah disappear, change her name and marry the rich dude named Miles. Even with that relationship, Hannah shouldn't have been made passive who is scared of him. Hannah's greatest weapon is poison and let's give her the arc where she slowly poisons Miles and comes back to Miami, with his money and rich enough to never fend for herself ever again.
Why is she back? Well to get revenge on Dexter of course. He broke her heart and put her in jail. And how does she do that? By secretly funding Oliver Saxon, giving him the necessary resources to go after Dexter while still distrusting Oliver herself. And Oliver entertains her because their goals align but he also doesn't like Hannah.
Can you imagine the psychological tension and pressure from Hannah and Oliver, while Vogel flip flops between Dexter and Oliver, and Debra keeps spiraling? Do you understand how delicious the tension would have been. To force Dexter to see the consequences of his actions in real time and possibly wonder if anyone is ever going to see him for himself, accept him for himself and not become self destructive.
I would have loved to see the moral of that story and what Dexter would have chosen
Oh and if Harrison does end up orphaned, let him be placed with Jamie Batista, or Angel (because I know he reappears in New Blood).
Anyways, that's my thought.
ETA: Oh, and her conclusion should have been either facing Dexter, or facing off Oliver, or dying with her own poison.
I have not seen many people in the fandom even touch the topic of Jamie Batista. She should be considered part of the core team (you can accept Quinn but not her???). Justice for Jamie. π€βπ»
More reasons below-
Is she perfect? No. But she's human and her reactions to every situation are valid.
Lets start off with her relationship with Quinn. Quinn is an insecure dumbass who thinks communication is a joke. Sorry not sorry, I don't really like Quinn. Does he have good traits? Yes, but that doesn't wash away his red flags. Quinn really didn't deserve Jamie, and even if he did, he should have gotten his priorities straight and not lead Jamie on if he was still hung up on Debra.
Jamie, the sweet woman that she is, straight up ASKED both Quinn and Debra if they are hung up on each other, and if they are she would step away from Quinn, but those two LIED AND GASLIT Jamie to the point where she definitely felt used. Also, Jamie tried very hard to communicate with Quinn and his dumbass thought she wouldn't understand??? My guy, she's the sister of Angel? Give her a chance?
π π π (me throwing them at Quinn).
...
Angel and Jamie's relationship.
I'll keep this brief- Angel really needed to stop being so overprotective over Jamie, because she was aware of the choices she was making for her own life. She just wanted Angel to support her and not condemn her or tell her she's making a mistake. Let her make mistakes my guy??? I understand being protective, but Angel was being a helicopter.
...
The Louis Greene Plot
I wish I could roll my eyes hard enough for them to get stuck in my head when it comes to this guy. Thank fuck he got killed. I'm not gonna touch on his relationship to Dexter. But after Dexter anonymously sent Jamie the findings that Louis has been cheating on her through their relationship, Jamie didn't cry or yell. She stood on business, TEN TOES DOWN! And confronted him before leaving. Now that's a woman who doesn't kneel or beg a man and I'm proud of her. π€π
...
Dexter's Relationship with Jamie. And Harrison.
I absolutely adored their awkward sibling energy, even when she was babysitting Harrison. Dexter trusted her enough to even stay at his apartment and look after Harrison! That's huge.
But, and this hurts to think about, I can't even imagine how Jamie would have moved forward when she heard that -
a) Debra got shot and died
b) Dexter also 'died'
c) Harrison is 'missing'.
Like, in my head, I would have so wanted Harrison to have ended up with Jamie instead of Hannah. And Hannah brought nothing to the table except troubles (which I agree with Debra).
I can't even imagine the grief that would have consumed her. And the show just.... Drops her completely. That wasn't funny at all.
And on top of that? In New Blood, Angel never fucking mentions anything about Jamie or how she has moved on. Harrison never even speaks about Jamie despite being old enough to remember her taking care of him. Like the erasure makes me MAD.
Conclusion? Jamie Batista deserves better. Always did. I hope she's okay in that universe. I hope she goes to her dream college. I hope she finds a partner who sees her for her.
For those of you reading this, this is my live reaction to the series. Yes, I've never watched it. So basically I'm writing down my reaction as the episodes unfold. So, go ahead.
SPOILER WARNING BELOW β οΈβ οΈβ οΈππ»
...
Episode 1- Oh, so we are starting somewhere snowy. Noted. And not killing a white deer... Alright. This dude got a cabin in the woods, rifles, and a pickup truck?? How tf is he living like this (aka financially)?
..... Debra. He's hallucinating Debra. Fuckkkk... Alright. I'll get over it. π₯²
Literally blinked at the intro wtf. π€¨ No iconic soundtrack, just flash images. Okay I guess.
James 'Jim'... Lindsay???? HUH? Ew... I don't like that. I don't know why, I just don't. It's like calling Sherlock 'Chad Penelope' or something. π I'm not calling him Jim.
... Nevermind. I got a whiplash with the officer, Angela. I'll get over it. (And really, a police officer Dexter? You never change lol).
Also... Where are we? Iron Lake.... Alright. Don't know where that is.
He sells guns??? Okay... At least he checks IDs.
What's Matt's problem? Weirdo. And I cannot unsee Angela as Debra. Dammit.
10 years wow. No kill? At least his awkwardness didn't fade lol. Matt and his friends are all weirdos. I'm uncomfortable π. I would have gotten the signature and ran lol.
Why is the introduction to Harrison (no longer blonde for some reason) so underwhelming? π Harrison being pissed? Very understandable. HE DID NOT JUST FUCKING BURN THE PICTURE OF HIM AND HARRISON AS A BABY WTF DEXTER. π€
Side note- my current headcanon as to why Harrison now has black hair instead of blonde is because he keeps dyeing it black like a sadboi. π
I'll probably understand the symbolism of the white deer soon. I side eye the CGI deer. I fucking knew it... I felt it coming. The shot that is. And there is the Dexter I know.
Not him still taking blood slides aka broken glass from a lamp. πππ Matt is so pathetic... Thank God he's gone. Wait, UNDER THE FIREPIT?!
Oh... So he meets up with Harrison at the bus stop and has the AUDACITY to ask him to come home and talk about being a father again? WHERE WAS THIS ENERGY WHEN YOU LEFT DEXTER? 10 years is not going to excuse you.
...
Episode 2- Well... That's awkward... And I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Get him some water with his sandwich Dexter wtf.
Oh, Hannah's dead (pancreatic cancer, three years ago). Alright. Also, Harrison found Dexter through an Instagram tag. That's something I think is worth noting. (As to how he could be easily found by anyone in Miami Metro, but that's just my wishful thinking).
Side note- I honestly expected Dexter to freak out more that Harrison found him. Like I needed an emotional element where they are fighting. I don't know if it'll happen in the coming episodes.
π€¦π»ββοΈ Dexter to Harrison: Dexter had to die. One episode ago: Dexter kills Matt. The irony is hilarious broski's. π
I know Debra is supposed to be a hallucination, but I didn't realise she stepped out of a Stephen King universe. Harry never did that lol. I'm just surprised. π
Also, what's Harrison's age? 18? Since he said that he 'aged out of the system'? 16? Because Angela said he could meet some high school kids his age? I guess, I'll note it down when I know. And is Harrison hearing Dexter talk to himself while he's in the bathroom?? That'll be hilarious.
..... So it's morning now (and after a camera in the hotel room montage) Dexter isn't going to stay with Harrison and talk about what it means and how people are going to perceive Harrison's presence with 'Jim'?? I guess, I'll find out.
Nevermind... So Harrison decides to introduce himself as 'Jim's son. π Same, Angela, same... π Harrison isn't holding back, good for him. Angela is angy lol. And she has a (adopted) daughter named Audrey... Alright.
Dexter's awkwardness π€ Harrison's autistic nature. Also, love that Harrison throws shade to Dexter.
Oh... So, I'm not hallucinating the chemistry between Audrey and Harrison, now that Angela confirmed that Audrey is adopted. π Yes, I see parallels, no I'm not going to comment on it.
Oh, Harrison has a history of drug abuse, gonna note that. Iris... That's a name to note too, related to Angela I guess. And Harrison has 'dark tendencies'... π Alright, I'll note.
Dexter, what do you mean you never imagined that Harrison would be left alone??? I guess this is my side tangent, but you cannot assume your child will not be left alone in a world after you leave them, hoping other people will take care of them. That's just wishful thinking. Ugh. I'm just mad.
Oh hey, look, it's Hank from Detroit: Become Human! π Aka Kurt.
...
Episode 3- Ngl, I do like the pipeline of the Indigenous people vs the townsfolk.
Ah teenagers... Don't miss being one. Never trust a teenage boy wearing a letterman jacket.
Well, Damien (CSI guy) is good at his job lol (And Dexter may excuse himself to watch Damien work because he needs to hide evidence, but I genuinely, lowkey think Dexter misses that work and was longing to see Damien work). And damn, Kurt ain't a nice guy.
Harrison doing good in school. Good for him.
Side note- Why is Dexter not more hyped about the fact that Harrison is doing so well at school? At least be proud?? Because I am! I mean, Dexter has a medical background, worked in the police force as a blood spatter analyst and even published papers on it. His uncle (RIP Brian) was a prosthetician and had a fucking PhD (even if he stole someone's identity and killed people). Harrison would of course inherit those smarts. ππ»ππ»ππ»
And Dexter not accounting for trail cams in a forest is fucking hilarious. π And really? Thermal cameras? πππ Dexter really has that plot armour thick AF! π
Okay, so Dexter did what he has to do to get scent dogs away. Also, we keep jump cutting to a girl locked in what looks like a hotel room. I don't know who the girl is but the caption keeps saying her name is Lily and I have no idea what's going on... Oh, so it wasn't a hotel room. She was kidnapped. Noted.
Good to know Hallucination Debra is fucking hilarious and Dexter can't keep lying to himself about not killing again. Like, sure bro, I trust you to keep that commitment. π
π³!!! Harrison's darker tendencies are showing. Keep a cool head my dude. The last thing your dad wants is more eyes on him and you. π (But good on him for helping out Ethan).
I don't like the vibes of Mr. Olsen and his excuses to get Audrey into his car... Thank God Harrison's back.
Why do I feel like Dexter is going to find bodies in the mines? Oh look, a bear.
Alright Ethan, you can chill. But I'm taking notes regardless.
Not Dexter fantasizing about a family and getting emotional after Harrison called him 'dad'. (Can you tell that I'm still mad?) Also, Molly Park, podcaster... Got it, noted.
Oh look, Dexter found an incinerator. And now Kurt is lying... Alrighty then.
...
Episode 4- Right, Harrison is in the wrestling team now. Noted. And stop pulling at my heartstrings by remembering Debra. π₯²
The more Kurt talks about Matt being alive the more my spidey senses tingle. What is this man up to? Okay, so Molly doesn't buy BS. Noted.
Okay. Harrison, I'm so sorry that he's relieving his mom's death through Molly's podcast. Sighhhhhh... π₯² Harrison honey, you need to breathe.
Ethan, you weirdo. I just hope Harrison isn't lying... Well, at least Dexter's blood spatter analysis got triggered. And I'm curious too. Okay, so Harrison attacked Ethan. And now the question is why.
And Kurt gave Harrison a gift (squints).
So, Iris was Angela's bff who went missing. Alright. Noted. And now Molly is working with Angela.
So Kurt is the bad guy, his new victim is Chloe and I still don't have answers as to why Harrison attacked Ethan. Next episode I guess.
Side note- I think Harrison did what he did because Ethan was a scapegoat and Harrison's perfect target for his rage. And also because he didn't want his new wrestling team mates to keep targeting Ethan and by extension Harrison, so Harrison took out the 'weakling' and made himself look like a hero in the process while calling them out as well. It's manipulative and pretty fucking smart. But we'll see what happens when Dexter confronts him about it.
...
Episode 5- Hey look, at least Hallucination Debra agrees with me that Harry was a shit father. π
Well, at least I got my confrontation between Dexter and Harrison. Harrison is deflecting obviously, but let's see how it develops.
Oh poor Chloe, hope you survive.
Not the teenagers having a party with the 'kill list'. π And Harrison broke his sobriety. Good lord. And wtf is even happening at this party my goodness (clutches my invisible pearls). And he OD'd, which I saw coming. Never do drugs kids. βπ»And everyone say thank you, Audrey.
Yup, Harrison's gonna be making some stupid choices. And no idea what Dexter is up to now. Okay, so that happened. I guess Logan is starting to get a little suspicious.
HOLY SHIT ANGEL!! Not them talking about the old cases lol. Angel is of course being Mr. Flirt. π Ummm... Angel forgot Harrison's name???? WTF- ooooooooohhhhhh. Oop- Angela is going to Angela now. π
Side note- The fact that Angel forgot Harrison's name has me really irked. Like what do you mean you forgot? Dexter was a man who worked with you. Heck, Angel even worked with Harry (Dexter: Original Sin). His wife was murdered. Debra constantly talked about Harrison. And YOUR OWN SISTER BABYSAT HIM. You FORGOT?! My dude, Angel, the last thing you knew was that Dexter 'died', you should have been more worried about what happened to Harrison. π€¦π»ββοΈπ€
Okay, Chloe, you do you. Be smart. Survive. Hopefully she does. Dammit, she dies. And wtf is Kurt's MO? He's so fucking confusing.
And Dexter is doing Dexter things because he cares lol. And yeah, Dexter and I do agree that the wallpaper is a crime. At least the drug dealer's death is creative, because damn Logan, your tenacity is reminding me of Quinn. Or at the very least Doakes.
Also, what the fuck is Harrison doing? Also, now what is Kurt's plan with Harrison? Because Harrison is right, nothing in life comes for free or being too kind. Or maybe that's just me. Eh, time will tell. But hey, at least Angela and Molly figured out that Kurt is lying.
So, why did it take Angela this long to not research 'Jim Lindsay' for what 10 years? Like I'd assume as a police chief you'd be running background checks on the people you date just to be sure. Well, next episode I guess.
...
Episode 6- I think Harrison genuinely needs a routine like his dad. Okay, I know Dexter is iffy about Kurt because Dexter killed his son Matt and Kurt went on to lie and tell everyone that Matt is alive, which makes Dexter feel weird and confused about what's going on with Kurt... But I also understand Harrison's perspective, because he never really sat down with anyone to talk about trying to not run away from his rage and feelings and dark tendencies. Honestly, these two really need to sit down and talk, which they are not doing and it's pissing me off. π€¦π»ββοΈ
No Dexter, you are not getting laid. ππ At least Dexter is being fucking honest with Angela as much as he can (without mentioning his side hobby of course). And Angela's rage π€ My rage. THANK YOU FOR SAYING DEXTER NEEDS THERAPY ANGELA. God, I hope you don't die. I'll be unhappy again. π
Not Kurt forging Dexter's signature. His frustration is palpable, how is Harrison not seeing that?
Sorry I lost it at Molly describing the Bay Harbour Butcher as butchery and Dexter agreeing. πππ
Finally they fucking sit down to talk about therapy! And oop, the tension is thick... Which is the exact tension I wanted during Episode 1. Ffs, Dexter, if you can be honest about your past with Angela (without mentioning your side hobby) then yes, you can be honest about it with the therapist and Harrison. He's goddamn pissing me off. π€ Yeah, Harrison rolls his eyes because that's understandable.
At least Harrison was able to be honest with Audrey about his rage and dark tendencies and oop- they kissed. More than kissed, but who cares. And oop- Angela found them.
Finally, Dexter knows that Molly isn't researching him. But Kurt asking Molly to come to his cabin? Girl, run. π At least Dexter's spidey senses are tingling again. Molly girl, run. π³π³π³ Not Dexter stepping in and making Kurt suspicious and Molly tense. Guys wtf. (Deep breaths) Guys, I'm tense af. πππ Not Kurt saying 'hope to return the favor sometime'.
Okay, Angela found a body in the caves. Holy fuck, it's Iris' body.
Dexter, ffs, stop commenting that wrestling is 'normal violence'. Sir, you are also a trained fighter (did you even tell Harrison about your jiu-jitsu?) π€¦π»ββοΈ Ffs, Harrison, let go! Fucking hell...
Guys, I'm just tense...
...
Episode 7- Oooh, so Kurt killed Iris. Is she his first victim? Yup, confirmed.
The fact that Dexter and Harrison are not sitting down and communicating is grinding on my gears fam. π€π€π€
Well, Kurt just stripped the entire basement. I guess he was prepared for that. π
I'm sorry, you need to dress up in that kind of scrubs to wash trucks???? And Dexter is doing that thing where he toys with another predator knowing it would get the people he cares for killed eg- Arthur Mitchell (Rita), Oliver Saxon (Debra). Sir, you've got to stop and reconsider this strategy. And welp, Kurt's arrested and I wonder for how long.
Ooooh, so Kurt knows Matt is dead and Dexter had something to do with it because Matt had a titanium hardware for a sports injury. Holy shit, that's good writing.
So Kurt is pinning Iris's death on his abusive dad. The question is, is he alive to defend himself? If not, then Kurt leaves and Dexter has to handle him and I guess that's what happens. And yup, he's free to go.
Not Molly and Angela talking together and piling on about how weird Dexter is. πππ
Well shit, Harrison remembers Rita's death. π They really need to talk to each other.
And who is after Dexter now???
...
Episode 8- What the hell am I watching??! Dexter wake the fuck up. Thank you.
I'm surprised Dexter doesn't carry his switchblade with him anymore. And Dexter got shot too, god damn. π³
Not Kurt saying to Harrison: 'I'm sure your dad's tied up with something.' ππ
Well, here goes Angela being a good cop and following clues. π This is why I question your taste in women Dexter.
Harrison be fucking real for once and ask yourself, why tf is Kurt hanging out me at school, alone. So, Kurt wants Harrison angry for some reason (squints). Honestly, at this point I just want Harrison to swing the ball back into Kurt's face. π
Dexter (a few minutes ago): I don't have all day, I have to get to Harrison. Dexter (a few minutes later): You said you had all day, but the night is all mine. π€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈ I don't know whether to laugh or cry at him for his ironies. Like sir. Honestly, Dexter smashing through a window that says 'You're Beautiful' while the guy hunting him looks like the Joker in making is funny af. π
Dammit Harrison, your red flag radar isn't sharp at all. And I can't even fault him. Aww, Harrison really needs a hug. π₯Ίπ« Yup, Harrison, now you see it. Thank fuck Dexter arrived.
Thank you for starting to talk Dexter, took you like what? The entire series to open up? Goddamn. π€¦π»ββοΈ
...
Episode 9- Why are we starting with clowns? What? I'm so confused rn. So, Dexter is explaining himself to Harrison while we see a clown flashback. When did this flashback happen? During those 10 years?
Also, why tf are y'all sitting so close to the fireplace? I have a natural tendency to lean back and whoop, there I go, getting burnt. π€¦π»ββοΈ
I don't know if it's not a good idea not to tell Harrison that Dexter's code ends up in the perpetrators death. Like I understand Dexter still wants to protect Harrison from the worst of it, but what would Dexter do if Harrison actually killed someone in rage? I guess, time will tell.
Also, I just noticed Molly is like *poof* gone from the last three episodes. Weird. Oh, uh, Merry Christmas I guess.
Also, it's really fucking funny that through the entire show, Dexter kept a Christmas tree in his cabin. π Also, a rifle for Harrison as a gift? Damn. Also, why is Dexter saying he's not a good shot? He is? Harry taught him when hunting alligators? Weird.
Also, did Dexter take the bullet out of his leg? Did Harrison help him? Because he's walking pretty fine right now and if Angela was there, she would have been asking questions. And aww, Harrison sketches Debra from memory. π₯Ή
God, not Angela being weird and distant and Dexter being oblivious. ππ Holy fuck, Kurt is back. I knew he wasn't done. And I guess I understand, because it's been 10 years and Dexter's instincts aren't as polished.
Okay, at least I got my partial answer as to why Harrison attacked Ethan- Harrison wanted to look like a hero.
Sigh, I'm tense whenever the camera pans to whatever Angela is doing. Making connections.
Not Kurt setting the cabin on fire. Very Lila of him. And Harrison asking his dad to teach him how to use lock picks. π Ohhhhh, so Kurt did get to Molly as well. Dammit.
So, Kurt is keeping the bodies of women preserved as trophies... Which is insane. On top of that, thank God Dexter told Harrison that he kills. And Angela is now looking for Molly, good for her really.
Wow, Dexter showing Harrison the process and ritual. What a bonding moment. Hope Angela doesn't catch them like that. But I do wonder, how does this series end...
Okay, so Kurt's MO is this- He doesn't want to be like his dad who took advantage of young vulnerable women who are runaways and don't have a support system so he takes them prisoner, treats them as a 'nice guy' and keeps them preserved forever. Noted. βπ» So, goodbye Kurt.
Oh yeah, their cabin. And damn, Kurt is still playing from his grave. Well, let's see how the series ends. Because I have no fucking idea.
...
Episode 10- I'm surprised with all that has happened, with his relationship with Angela, Dexter never noticed how weird and distant she has become.
Oh look, Harrison is covering for Dexter. How sweet. And Dexter wants to move... Again. π€·π»ββοΈ
π³, Looks like Angela made a decision. And honestly, Dexter is good too, for bringing up theories. π
Angela is calling Angel?? Well shit, Angel now knows Dexter is alive. π And he has the old LaGuerta files. π
Well, Dexter is learning how good of a cop his now (ex?) girlfriend is. I just love how Logan is so confused.
Goddamnit Dexter! You just killed Logan. He should have waited. π€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈ
... Fuck, Angela is now really angry at Dexter. Well yes, they have broken up. π₯² And she found Logan's body after finding Kurt's trophies. No wonder she's angry and freaking out.
And yup, Harrison's angry. And Harrison is spitting facts. πβ No, Dexter fucking face your consequences. π€¦π»ββοΈ Honestly, this entire series is making me think how they are going to end Dexter's storyline one day. Does he go to jail? Die? Hides? I don't know... But I know his legacy will live on with Harrison whether Harrison chooses it or not.
Well, Harrison shot Dexter. At least Angela is letting Harrison go.
...
Okay, so the series have ended- With Dexter shot, Angela taking the blame for Dexter being shot, and Harrison leaving. And I know, Dexter lives because hey, I watched Original Sin and the first few minutes of the episode is Dexter being taken to the hospital. So I have no idea how Harrison reunites with Dexter in Resurrection. Or what is Angela or Audrey's fate. Or if Angel reappears. At least Angela got the closure on Kurt. I hate that Logan died, but I am so fucking thankful Angela is alive.
I'm mostly... Meh, about the ending. I don't hate it nor do I like it. And I also don't like how Dexter didn't tell Harrison the truth about a lot of things. But whatever, I'll wait for Resurrection to be finished (which I am aware will take years but that's the point of binge watching) but honestly, so far in the DCU (Dexter Cinematic Universe), I am interested to see how his story really ends.
Overall rating- 8.5/10.
See you later peeps, xoxo. Sayonara Iron Lake. βπ»
I'm seeing warnings about scammers trying to commission artists but the "reference sheet" for their character they want commissioned isn't an image but a .vbs file ("visual basic script"), and will run a script when you open it, probably to yoink your account(s), but I haven't seen this from anyone who's actually clicked it yet. Just be careful and never open a file like that, 'cause people suck.
This literally took me like 2 minutes to make and boy oh boy am I going to rant. And just to preface, to anyone reading this- I have never fully finished the OG series until Netflix threatened me with pulling the series off until the end of March. So, I put off my procrastination, put on my big girl panties, and decided to finally fucking finish this. And yes, this is my unedited reaction. π
So, SPOILER WARNING BELOW β οΈβ οΈβ οΈ
Before I continue, being in this fandom, I have long since been spoiled about Debra's death. Okay? I get it. I anticipated it. And I still got emotional. π€§
And honestly, I just need to put my chaotic thoughts in order.
First things first- the fact that I procrastinated binge watching a series is a big red flag for the writing. So take that as you will. And also, I have (somehow), been able to dodge spoilers for New Blood left and right. I genuinely don't know anything except that Harrison comes back to find his father. That's it. Like literally it. So yeah, I'm going to start New Blood with virgin eyes.
(yes, I've seen a few posts on New Blood, but they don't make sense to me and I've scrolled past them. But I have watched Original Sin and made a post about it. So no, I also have not watched Resurrection.)
...
With that preamble out of the way, let's talk about the ending π.....
I think my reaction pretty much sums it up, but um, this was such a cluster fuck of things that happened in a rotating roster that I'm still reeling.
1. Dexter fucking pissed me off. Like a little too much. I understand where he's coming from but the FACT that he GASLIT DEBRA when Hannah poisoned her.... Boy, I'm about to beat your ass up. π€ And for real, he makes such stupid decisions again and again and again? Like leaving Oliver (I don't really care about calling him Daniel), to Debra. Really?
2. Also, who are these rotating cast of people coming and going? Why should I care about them? Like Niki (Masuka's daughter, why is she there? She feels like those filler episodes that they drop in long form anime), Detective Miller (so just a prop to exist and not flesh out even a little bit? They literally saw that the homicide department was looking like an all boys club so they hired a woman to fill the hole), Cassie (Dexter's neighbour, potential LI, dead), Zach (what was his point except to be a loose cannon fodder), Jacob Elway (ratty, greasy, slimy... I don't know why he's so weirdly creepy towards Debra and exudes the aura of Mr. Nice Guy), Arlene (why are you here? Shouldn't you NOT be in Miami?), and the U. S Marshal (I'm sorry, you see a man aka Oliver, tied to a gurney and asking for help with knives visible at his side and no other visible injury after following Debra who has done nothing but be slightly suspicious but an overall good officer and your first instinct is to not ask questions? Not calling in what you see? Just assuming and HELPING HIM OUT OF THE BINDS? Why are you a U.S Marshal my dude?)
Edit to add: I forgot that nobody mentioned how Debra tried to kill herself and Dexter by running them both off the road and into a lake. Which genuinely took me by surprise. On one hand, my surprise was genuine that I somehow wasn't spoiled by the fandom about this. But second of all... What. They survive and talk about it in Vogel's office, but I honestly cannot stop laughing at the edit of Dexter underwater. Like they just kept jump cutting into it while Debra survives and a passerby helps her and calls for help. And nobody in Miami Metro was notified??? π
3. I'm sorry, but I needed to add this hilarious thing before I forget. When Vogel (I'll get to this bitch too), gave Dexter a young picture of Oliver, and Dexter took to scan and age him up? πππ That aged up photo is going to fucking haunt my dreams. It's giving... The animatronic baby Renesmee from Twilight.
Also in the same vein, when in the flashback, when Harrison was born and Debra and Dexter were visiting him, someone in the hair department should have been fired. They gave Debra a shitty wig in the shape of a bob. And btw, IT WAS SLIDING DOWN HER FOREHEAD. I can see the parting start from the forehead π Well, at least she matched Dexter's fuckass wig.
4. Dude. Hannah McKay...
Okay, I'll make a separate post about her, but I'm sorry? What the fuck was her arc? She could have been a great villian, but nooo, they made her helpless and stupid for some reason. And she never fully acknowledges how she poisons Debra and Debra is basically forced to forgive her and get along with a weird tension (thankfully they did keep the weird tension).
Also, why is she suddenly so stupid? You are aware that the U.S Marshall's are after you and you're wearing (checks notes)... A pink cocktail dress with no changes to your hair or face. Practical clothing who?... Is she in the room with us???
5. I will say, Oliver Saxon is better written. Could it have been great, yes. The psychological tension was there, but with the rotating cast, Dexter's stupidity, side plots with loose ends, even he got watered down a little. Which yes, is a shame.
6. The real villain of season 8 is Dr. Vogel and no one can convince me otherwise. Fuck you Vogel. π€ I'll make a separate post on her too. Spiritual son my ass.
Also, Harry working with Dr. Vogel also gives us a glimpse of how shitty Harry still is. You take him to a doctor who specialises in psychopathy and your first instinct is to control Dexter, but also, there is no red flag popping in you as a detective? That this doctor is taking advantage of Dexter's trauma? That she's taking advantage of your helplessness? Are you happy Harry?
7. Debra's death... I don't know what to expand on it, but yeah, I saw it coming and it still hit me. Like she's the only one who grew up with Dexter and he finally fucking told her he loved her. (I swear I don't want to see Debster posts).
And a side tangent to that, and I can give it a pass because I can tell the showrunners were running out of time, but how come nobody got alerted when Dexter switched off Debra's life support? And nobody saw OR stopped Dexter from basically carrying her out on that gurney (heck, her face was uncovered)? Even with the hurricane, you'd think people would be keeping an eye on... (Checks notes) A potential victim of a shootout of The Brain Surgeon.... Okay... π
8. Also, the ending makes me mad for two reasons- first, Dexter completely abandoning Harrison in the form of self sacrifice or his preservation (because the last clip is of him alive doing woodworking π). I can practically hear Debra's ghost yelling in the background to GO BACK TO HIS SON. Also, Dexter is abandoning the last good thing that carries Rita's heart. π So yeah, I am mad at him.
Second reason- Harrison is left in the hands of Hannah, who is still by the way, a poisoner. And I don't know how that will be carried over in New Blood. Do they know of Debra's death? Does Angel try to find them? Loose ends. (Don't spoil me for New Blood and Resurrection). Also, I'll miss Astor and Cody, and I'm pretty sure they won't be brought back. π
9. JUSTICE FOR JAMIE BATISTA. FUCK YOU QUINN. ππ
I mean, yeah, that's all I have to say for this... Because I got separate posts coming. Later on. Right now, I just feel like this-
Sayonara peeps. I feel like I need a few hours (probably days) to feel normal.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but after recently watching Iron Lung, I had one question swimming in my head- Why does the blood eel use the voice of a woman? Why not a man's?
Is it because of an evolutionary standpoint where women are basically biologically engineered to carry the knowledge and genes of the human race? Is it because hearing a woman's voice in distress lowers your defenses and heightens trust in an unfamiliar situation and place? Is it because of the symbolism of a 'mother' who is carrying it's victims knowledge and body as her own like a spider carries it's eggs? Even with the overlapping voices... The most prominent we hear are women's voices. What are your thoughts?
