people in the notes of that piece about starting an Artists’ Space as an artist were doing a very bad job of understanding why it’s important to have insurance. Like yeah the Ghost Ship was an extreme case but 1) any building can catch fire 2) insurance requires inspections, the inspections will reveal hazards, you NEED this especially because 3) if one artists’ space has a disaster, cities will crack down on other artists’ spaces (Oakland shut down many such spaces in the aftermath of the Ghost Ship fire, including spaces that allegedly had no known issues but were inconvenient to the agendas of their landlords)

“The Ghost Ship is not relevant to your bookstore” yes it is. If you’ve never been in an indie bookstore that was a fire trap that’s great but I PROMISE you any space that hosts any kind of events needs fire insurance and not following safety regulations makes you LESS of an open community space, not more

#certain type of guy loves to be like 'you don't NEED the authorities to be safety conscious and responsible you can just do it' #and it's like. Ok in principle sure. But are you well versed in emergency safety procedures and workplace hazards? #Do you know someone who is? #Are you expecting a person with such expertise to show up in a puff of smoke with boundless unpaid community spirit?

#And more to the point: would you listen if they did? #Because your unwillingness to respect basic principles like 'don't block the fire exit no really even temporarily I'm not kidding' #suggests not!!

#Genuinely I wish community organizations would be self-organized towards being on the ball with this #But very often what it comes down to is that people do such a shit job that you have to drag the fire marshal in to yell at them

#I remember helping set up for an artsy event one time and the fire marshal who did walkthrough was like 'you need to move these tables to #make a 10 ft fire lane to the door' so I was doing that. And the event organizer kept trying to get me to put them back! #Same event another year was in a space where the stupid door opened inward (why) so the fire marshal had us keep the door open all night #It was cold and people were grumpy and kept trying to close it and I literally spent a while puppy gaurding it like.

#Do You Know what a crowd crush is? Lets not find out!! #Literally there's like 300 people in here and you are burning real candles! We are not fucking around!

#edit: WAIT i FORGOT THE WORST ONE #this event usually happened in warehouse spaces that were slated for demolition soon so people were pretty cavalier #about painting on the building and nailing things to it and whatnot

#One year I was helping break down some shelving structures we wouldn't need to get wood to assemble benches and tables #And someone who was apparently impressed by my carpentry know-how asked me if I thought it would be ok if they took some of those #Nice long diagonal boards out of the wall.

#The wall!!! The two story unfinished warehouse wall with exposed studs! They wanted to take the fucking cross-bracing!!!!!! #Can you actually imagine. Being a whole adult artist. And deciding to ask a random teenager - on the basis of they know how to use a hammer #- if you can take STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS out of THE FUCKING EXTERIOR WALL
