I guess this seems as good a time as any to introduce myself again.

I'm Kayt, an academic library worker, night lurker, and person who was unironically described by a fellow librarian as a vampire. I blog about libraries and communication and adhd and whatever leisure I'm enjoying and also really basic job/resume tips because I hire college students and see some really interesting choices sometimes.

My favorite dinosaur is Shuvuuia and my favorite color is orange. I used to live with pets (Momiji Hasenpfeffer; Artemis Fowl), have a garden with garlic (and a guide somewhere in my blog about how you can also have a garden full of garlic) and a browser full of tabs that I am absolutely going to finish reading one day.

My favorite way to eat white bread is this. 1, Toast it after spread honey on it. 2, Spread butter on the honey-toast. 3, Spread honey on the buttered honey-toast, again. 4, Toast it again. The final one should be a toast soaked in the honey you've spread on it first.

don’t know if this will help anyone, but it’s a social situation I’ve run into a few times and it both bugs me and is something i think people may genuinely not know how to navigate:

if you’re in a conversation and someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, but you don’t want to make it awkward, you have two options. you can 1) give a vague non-answer and then ask the person who asked you a question in return or 2) lie!

I’ve been in several convos where the person knows they can give a vague non-answer, but then they don’t go any further. so then the conversational ball is back in my court, my conversation partner has given me nothing to jump off of, so all I can really do is ask them another question. which can feel like prying, because I just got a vague non-answer to my previous question.

if you don’t know what questions to ask, just ask the person back the question they asked you. and if you don’t want to do all that, just lie. give a vaguely positive answer, and then change the subject to something you do want to talk about.

and look I get it! I’ve been at my absolute lowest, attending a friend’s birthday party because I said I would two weeks ago, I know it’s hard to get asked how you are when the answer is “never been worse!” but you don’t want to bring the mood down. I promise you’ll have more fun at the party, and your conversation partners will thank you if you hit them with a sarcastic “living the dream!” and then pivot the convo to pop culture, or the weather, or anything that’s not them feeling awkward that they poked a sore spot by asking how you are.

#i can already imagine the things people will say about this being neurotypical nonsense and we should just say what we mean #and I shouldn’t ask how someone is if I don’t want the answer #but here’s the thing! I do want the answer! I asked because I care! #this post is for people who for whatever reason don’t want to give the real answer #and thus act awkward and offended when you ask them a very simple question like how are you? #people don’t have to answer every question i ask! #but i do think it is rude to make a person feel bad about asking a question even if it unintentionally poked a sore spot #there’s a time to be rude to question askers #and that’s when they ask a rude question #but how are you is not a rude question (via OP)

there's just not enough time in the day for video games. even when I want to play them and dont have anything else going on I still don't end up playing them. this is because there's actually only four hours in the day and nobody is talking about this

I want to be super duper clear that any time you share a screenshot of a twitter post without going to look for the context, or any time you reblog a news article because of a provocative headline on a story that you didn't actually read, you are "outsourcing your thinking to [X]" or "giving in to cognitive surrender" or "allowing cognitive offloading to override your critical thinking."

Of course it is not good that people are using AI unquestioningly and accepting whatever answers it gives them.

It is also very fucking bad that people are not double checking ragebait news headlines, are lamenting "trends" that are a single deranged twitter user on a rant, or are seeing something third-hand in a post that drastically misinterpreted the source material and using that as the foundation for their reactionary viewpoints.

As somebody who is critical of AI it is crazy-making to see so many people talking about how AI kills your critical thinking abilities while citing points from a tumblr post of a screenshot of a news article that overasserted a claim made in a paper they didn't read that circulated and picked up tens of thousands of notes from people being confidently wrong about water use and power consumption (based on numbers from 2021-2022) IN ADDITION to using language that the authors of the paper explicitly begged people not to use when discussing their research (which, of course, the rebloggers never saw because they read a reblog of a screenshot of a news article that overstated a claim, not the paper that made the claim).

For instance, in the paper that everyone loves to talk about when they say that AI is making people stupider (the cognitive offloading one), nobody ever brings up the fact that the group that used their brain only for the first few instances of the task had higher overall performance than the AI-using group and the search engine using group and then had higher performance over their own previous metrics when using AI in an optional instance at the end of the study.

Our media literacy and critical thinking skills were disastrously eroded before AI tools where everywhere and now people are pointing at AI as a scapegoat while they are still not *reading the goddamned stories or doing the critical thinking.*
