Drawing a detailed portrait of the man you loathe so you can punch him in the face is totally normal behavior, right?
Beatrice's feelings for William prior to them becoming friends are complicated. She found him disagreeable and unkempt (because William doesn't pay attention to social etiquette in the slightest. He has his sleeves rolled up no matter the occasion!), but still tried being polite. But William seemed to sense her underlying disapproval. He'd rather people just be forthright with their dislike of him, so he started egging her on. Eventually he got what he wanted, and they bickered back and forth. 'Twas a sight, indeed.
What complicated these feeling then? Well, one day when she taking a stroll, she saw him taking a bath in a river. Will has a nice butt. And that pissed her off. I am not above stupid tropes.
