Problems with BMI
Body mass index (BMI) is merely a ratio of weight to height that helps determine ones risk for disease. It is not a measure of body composition since it does not tell us what we are made up of (fat, muscle, bone, etc.). It is a quick way to help give someone an idea but doesn't necessary correlate with your percent body fat. The category of BMI that best correlates with the lowest risk of disease is 18.5 - 24.9. BUT, an individual who has a high amount of muscle mass will weigh more and therefore based off their BMI they may look obese but they are not!
Best way to determine body composition is with underwater weighing, BodPod, and skinfold thickness.
