The most important thing I learned while doing my PhD is that you have to read outdated papers in context. I would get frustrated when contemporary scholars would cite them and treat them like absolute truth. These papers might seem a bit silly nowadays, unscientific or even written by someone who didn't know what they were doing.

However, these works were once innovative, they often verbalized things that had been on people's minds for some time already. Some of them, despite being unscientific, were opposing certain mainstream (sometimes oppressive) narratives.

You can't dismiss a work as a "load of crap", you need to ask "why?" And recognize that these papers were products of their times.

Usually you're not supposed to post about vacations before you're back home, but good luck catching me.

We got a new rat hideout last week and Kefir loves it.

I'd love to hug him and kiss him, but he absolutely hates being touched, so I can only give him cucumber pieces and broccoli. He also smells like McDonald's fries.

He holds our fingers in between his teeth to show us he's unhappy with something, for example when we don't let him chew my slippers.

Today Tofik is getting his ✂️🥚🥚surgery. He has sent 2 people to the doctor and a rat to the rat ER. If it doesn't work, we'll hire that behaviorist.

In the past few days he's been hissing into the crack of the living room door, because he wanted to f up the other rats.

I've never seen a rat this aggressive.

And I want to add context, because people like to speculate: we did everything by the book: the intros, he had been to the vet, we have consulted the vet, the shelter people and a rat behaviorist. The conclusion was that he needed to be neutered.

People say that a rat needs to give you consent to be picked up and I agree with this as a principle, but my experience tells me this is not always the case.

I've had aggressive and skittish rats and picking them up over time made them more timid and self-confident. Maciek here is a great example, he would freak out when picked up, but since we started to give him medicine everyday, he has been such an extroverted rat.

Beelzebub had been very aggressive and he had had some sort of personal vendetta against all humans, but dad started to pick him up and he turned to the softest rat who demanded pets all the time.

Also, this is not advice, it won't work for everybody. If a rat is clearly uncomfortable bugging it won't make them like you.

The thing is, if a student has a question they go ask a teacher, PhD students and PhDs go ask professors, but where would professors seek answers?

It's like when you're a child and wonder if a priest will seek another priest for Holy Confession?

The order of things at my alma mater was that the professors would go ask the librarian and he had many answers. Like an ancient guardian of centuries old books, he would fall asleep in his chair and snore loudly, but if woken up by a student, he would deny falling asleep and blame his asthma for the noises.

They do have every right to be grumpy.

The last day, I had the strangest realization. I post to my Tumblr things that I consider "free time drawings" or "drawing for fun". So I´ve posted only a few things about my comics or my animation jobs. Means "real life work". But I have so much extra from all my projects and...well. If my dear followers don't mind, I can post it :D So here is study material for my adaptation of the theatre play RUR, deeply inspired by Zlín industrial area and Zlín museum :)

Second Tofik bite update:

Thanks to him I have a hefty discount on an antibiotic. The cutie patootie bit through my artery and a nerve.

I'm getting him a rat behaviorist, because he's testing me every day. Like I said, he is a rescue and has some trauma. He is so anxious that even spoons scare him, he refuses to step on the floor, hides food in his litterbox etc.

I want to give you guys more context:

He was found somewhere in an apartment complex, was probably thrown away like trash. He was brought to the rodent shelter/foster home and one thing about rodent shelters in my country is that all the animals get taken to the vet first thing when they get there.

Together with the paperwork I got his medical records, he's okay. He's a very young rat, around 4 months old. He is friendly (unlike Beelzebub, one of my heart rats) as long as you don't touch him. He doesn't mind eating food from human hand, but he is terrified of fingers touching him and spoons. He also cannot tolerate other rats' presence in the same room, even on neutral territory.

Despite me working with him every day (bribing him with food to come out) he isn't making much progress, so I contacted a behaviorist and we will be talking about him. If it doesn't work, I will take him to the vet once again to discuss our options.
