How to talk to tall people, a guide by aubry bracco
My mother and I are in different rooms of the same house: she is watching Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, I am watching Survivor: Kaoh Rong. Average day in this house I fear.
Not me jinxing gas prices for my entire community by driving past the Kroger petrol station and saying “Gosh, 3.97, under four dollars, that’s lucky!”
I’ve been spinning like a chicken on a spit ever since I heard about the whole ‘AI generated story places in renowned Commonwealth Writing Prize’ scandal and now has come the time to regale you with my Opinions™️ about the matter, because it’s hit on some thoughts I’ve had for a while re: how I approach writing, both fanfic and original fiction… and thoughts I’ve had as a reader. long read, strap in.
tldr scandal speedrun: story by Trinidadian writer Jamir Nazir just won the Caribbean regional prize at the 2026 Commonwealth Short Story Prize ie one of the biggest short fiction awards in the world (almost 8000 entries this year) and was subsequently published on Granta's website, as all regional winners are. readers start flagging that something is off, and it quickly becomes clear that the story is almost certainly AI generated, and obviously the press and wank started up, media coverage, and my all time favourite part: Granta editor Sigrid Rausing uploads the story into an AI to ask if an AI wrote it and then puts out a statement that pretty much says ‘probably, but guess we’ll never know!’ (SORRY THIS PART IS SOOOO FUCKING FUNNY TO ME LMFAO 😭)
much of the earlyish discourse has focused on the AI detection question, what does this mean for literary prizes going forward, how do we verify human authorship. some responses have been very good/interesting (the Africa is a Country piece especially). what I want to yap about is what the judges' response to this story tells us about how postcolonial writing is read by the institutions that gatekeep it and readers who dismiss it (and this puts it perfectly with Arundhati Roy as an example), what the judging panel’s language reveals when read as a critical object in itself, and why the failure mode here is so damaging. tldr: the story is dogshit and so clearly AI generated you can even see the AI’s ‘thought’ process, but the mainstream reactions are slagging off the wrong thing, and for reasons that have little to do with AI.
it has been actually infuriating to watch a significant chunk of the online reaction use this nonsense piece of writing as a launching pad for a much broader dismissal. someone posts the bench-men sentence or the sunrise-over-a-sink sentence as evidence of AI, and then in the replies someone else will say some shit like "well this is just what postcolonial writing is like" or "I've read prize-winning stuff that reads exactly like this". and suddenly we're not talking about Jamir Nazir anymore, we're talking about whether this entire mode of writing, postcolonial literary fiction, global south prose ‘in general’, varied and distinct language plays associated with everyone from Roy to Walcott to Kincaid, as somehow inherently gaudy, unmoored, purple, a performance of profundity that collapses under scrutiny. sheer vim against styles of writing unfairly and lazily judged as ‘florid’ and ‘overwrought’, ie people calling for the clinical manicuring of prose through a lens of anti-AI progressivism.

One of the bazillion things a despite about the age of computers being in charge of a lot of car functions is the automated parallel parking. Because I can parallel park. Masterfully. I can parallel park very well because I learned to drive in a time where such features probably existed somewhere, but were way too expensive.
I do not want my parallel parking, my one skill, to be taken by computers.

like fire in his dreams
[Fingon/Finrod/Maedhros | T+ | 400w | ao3]
Written for the LTC Microfic prompts: red dawn, dreams, losgar
Findaráto finds Findekáno once the worst of the initial commotion has died down. Smoke still hangs on the horizon, dawn spilling like blood across the restless waves.
Findekáno watches in silence, his expression like stone. Findaráto can still see the red on his hands. On their hands—once, not long ago, his lovers; now, like fire in his dreams, the slayers of his kin.
He wants to feel vindicated, this betrayal now a shared reckoning between them. Cannot bring himself to, his heart a stone inside his chest. They have lost enough, he thinks, and knows with bone-deep certainty that it is far from the worst of it, of what they will stain their hands with, yet.
“Say what you must, Ingo,” Findekáno says. He sounds ready for battle, and it has been a long time indeed, since he has sounded anything but.
“What is there left to say?”
After all, what room does Findaráto have for judgement? For is it not worse, to leave your father, rather than to follow him? Does it make a difference, in the end, whether you did it for love, or glory, or the ever-insatiable curiosity that plunged Findaráto into trouble for as long as he has lived upon these hallowed shores? Is it not the same bristling, sparking hubris that brought their forefathers to these shores in the first place?
Findekáno turns to look at him, his eyes bright with the light of withered trees, and the iron-determination of his that ever, Findaráto has loved most. “Yet much there is left to say, Ingo; and say it we shall, once we meet him on those far shores. This is not the end.”
Often, Findaráto has found himself wondering at the strange way the three of them fit together—unlikely, an anomaly, a slotting of pieces that should not fit. Often, he has dreamed of their end, of the cataclysm of fire and smoke that would break them. Often, he has wondered how they were to make it through without losing pieces to each other.
The ships are burning, and Findekáno’s hands are bloodied, still. Findaráto smiles, mirthless like the dark night. “All things end, Findekáno. Those who have not learnt it yet will soon; as shall you.”
The truth, it turns out, is that there is no making it. There is only their choices, and seeing them through to their bitter, inevitable ends.
Idk how big the overlap is between Silm and Survivor fans, but congratulations Aubry, you deserved the heck out of the that.
How Long is this Fic Really?: A Guide
Word count in the HP Series:
Sorcerer’s Stones: 76,944 Chamber of Secrets: 85,141 Prisoner of Azkaban: 107,253 Goblet of Fire: 190,637 Order of the Phoenix: 257,045 Half-Blood Prince: 168,923 Deathly Hallows: 198,227
Word count in the LOTR Series:
The Hobbit: 95,022 Fellowship of the Ring: 177,227 Two Towers: 143,436 Return of the King: 134,462
This changed me
I’ve read/ am reading fic that are upwards to 150,000 - 200,000. You’re telling me that authors that write for fun are writing a full-length book for the fun of it? They have earned my respect 10 fold.
A friendly reminder.
Those, my friends, are outliers.
Young Adult books are roughly 55,000 to 80,000 words. (Younger YA skews shorter.)
Mystery (especially cozy mystery) books tend to be between 65,000 to 80,000 words.
Romance tends to be between 85,000 to 100,000.
Fantasy and sometimes Thrillers tends to go longer; HOWEVER, anything above 120,000 is considered (and this is an official industry term guys) REALLY FUCKING LONG. As in, if someone submitted a 170,000-word book for publication, there is a very good chance they would have to cut 50,000 words or more before it would be published. I’ve worked for publishers where anything over 120,000 was an automatic rejection.
(Note: this is depending on a lot of different factors. Notice how Rowling’s books got suddenly longer–that’s because her name got big enough that she could sell those huge monsters. Most young authors don’t have the benefit of the doubt there.) (And of course there are always exceptions. This is strictly average industry accepted norms. Like seriously, if you’re trying to get published, learn the average length of books in your genre, because it is a barrier to publication if you’re significantly too short or too long.)
So if you are reading a 200,000 word fanfiction, you are not reading a full-length book someone wrote for the fun of it. You are reading TWO FULL-LENGTH BOOKS someone wrote for the fun of it.
PS: While I’m dropping numbers, here’s another. The average chapter length tends to be 3,000 to 4,500 words. So if your fic is 4,000 words, hey–you wrote a whole chapter!
So I have written an entire book, decided I didn’t like it, and never finished writing

GILRAEN THE FAIR
"Gilraen watches a delighted grin spread over Aragorn’s face as Elrond finally allows him to lay stitches over the smallest cut, watches him copy exactly what the healer was demonstrating on a larger wound, down to the cadence of his breath. She watches as he follows Elrond around the room, pauses at other bedsides, clasps his hands behind his back every time Elrond does the same.
He looks like a busy little fish, she thinks fondly, scurrying around with his arms full of basins and bandages, an unwinding roll of dressing tucked into his belt like a tail. Like an obliging little minnow. A minnow, who swims beside the whale and takes shelter in the vastness of its shadow, not realising the shadow races towards icy waters no minnow can hope to survive." - A VERY CURIOUS THING
most of my art time this month is taken up by commissions and trsb so i wasn’t going to draw anything detailed, but i found time to paint Gilraen as per recent brainrot. i wanted her to look very not-elven, young and rosy and hearty, because girl gets plenty of fresh air running around in pursuit of the gremlin that was young aragorn. featuring @peasant-player vintage berry pattern making another appearance. also click ‘read more’ if you want to see this mocked up as a pakistani tv serial poster bc i’m still crying over @seaemberthesecond’s post
I was just rewatching lotr and while it’s an emotional moment and significant narratively it’s so fucking funny that Galadriel gives everyone their super awesome elven gifts and then gets to Frodo and is like “and for you ring bearer, elrond’s dad in a bottle”
I once watched this scene with a friend who hadn’t seen the films before, and when the Bottle of Eärendil (tm) was brought out in the fight against Shelob, I said ‘look it’s Elrond’s dad’ and she said ‘you mean the SPIDER??!!’
Wouldn’t it be nice to have at least one Tolkien adaptation that wouldn’t make Celedriel shippers suffer more than Jesus?
And the only thing you really need to do is not ignore Celeborn’s existence in favor of shipping Galadriel with a gay wizard, a gay dark lord, or her own son-in-law...
