Suzanne Collins is a freaking icon, and one of the best modern authors.

The Hunger Games literally changed the YA and dystopian genre. She started the trope of revolting against the government, she had a realistic teenage girl as a protagonist (Katniss messed up, made impulsive decisions, had a not always great relationship with her mother, was reluctant about romance, and hated having her legs waxed (we stan)). After doing all this, she took her success and sodded off. She hasn’t said a freaking word about everyone copying her, she isn’t even on public social media. She opened tonnes of people’s minds, and very importantly, showed girls that we don’t have to accept how the world is. She introduced the concept of government toxicity and propaganda to us, how often those in power are manipulative and take advantage of those who cannot defend themselves. She showed us so many ways in which the world is wrong, and did so in a beautiful way, which has stayed with so many people. She did this without blatantly being like, this that and the other are everything that’s wrong. She gave us a relatable and realistic character, and showed her thoughts, in a way that made the readers realise a lot of problems people face in a way that lingered. She didn’t just provide entertainment, she taught lessons without us realising it. She’s an icon, and a BAMF
