Another one of the reasons I love la cage so much is because unlike most other queer stories (especially around that time, though it really hasn’t gotten much better) it has homophobia, but that does not cause the ruin of any of the characters. No one dies. No one stops being gay because it’s hard. I too have had to sneak around conservative family members. I too have been called slurs in public. I too have been told that I don’t belong, that I need to leave. And this is one of the few pieces of queer media that holds my hand through it and says look, you’ll be alright. You’re still queer. You don’t stop being queer when someone tells you to. And you’ll be okay.
