When rats are happy they kinda just…pop their eyes in and out

Rats chatter to show emotion; that’s called bruxing! It can be good or bad. When they are super happy though, they will brux so intensely their facial muscles will cause their eyes to pop in and out and voila: excellent happy boggles! A very comfy rat.

Somewhere a person made an excellent post about how this works exactly… So if you can, help a sister out!

I was hesitant to post an update on Sammy too early because I didn’t want to jinx anything, but after a few days of antibiotics, pedialyte, chocolate Ensure and scrambled eggs, my boy has finally begun eating and drinking water again!!

As soon as I saw him drink out of his water bottle after almost 3 days of nothing I almost cried lol. It started when he began getting excited about the chocolate Ensure (which I mixed with 1cc of Pedialyte every 3ish hours) and I think it helped get his energy up as well. The first few days he would only lay in one hammock, but eventually he started coming out more and more. The second night I had a scare where he went into respiratory distress again and started frantically running around the cage gasping for air, but after that he settled down to sleep and I left him alone to rest, ready to feed him Ensure as soon as he woke up.

Today he bolted out when it was time for their nightly veggies and he’s now super excited to explore during free roam! His sides are still visibly contracting when he breathes, and he still has some porphyrin on his nose, but he’s acting SO much better and he has a recheck on Tuesday. That vet appointment will also be accompanied by Pippin, who has a bit of inflammation around his eye (he has a corneal ulcer that I manage with ointment which the vet already knows about) but I’m worried about there being an infection, with it being on the face it makes it even more urgent. So hopefully we can get that cleared up as well with some meds!

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes. I genuinely didn’t think Sam would survive those first few nights, but he is a trooper, and I’m so happy he is still here with me!

EDIT: you can tell he’s back to normal because he is back to being an asshole 😂 little shit just bit my toes which is what he is known for but hasn’t done since being sick lmao
