turns out that pack rats (Neotoma sp.) creates these big middens which they urinate on. The urine then crystallizes over time, creating amber-like deposits. Some of the ones found in caves are 50.000 years old and contains intact plant material, allowing scientists to analyse the prehistoric flora.
the dark deposits in the middle are 10.000+ year old crystallized rat piss

We are some good good boys! Meet Ango (silver and white) and Dusty (cinnamon rex)!
To let everyone know, sweet baby Totem passed away on September 4th, 2019. He was struggling with severe hind leg degeneration at a month shy of two and a half years old. It was his time to go and he was ready, but we were all amazed at how happy and brave he was until the end. Totem will be missed so, so dearly by everyone who was blessed enough to know him.
In his place are Ango and Dusty, two sweet brothers that are learning to fill his shoes. This blog will be converted into their new home on the internet and I hope you will enjoy them as much as you did Totes.
Tal’ngay Dha’run the leucistic grey-headed flying fox was rescued in the town of Canungra on the Gold Coast in Australia. He was suffering from extreme sunburn due to his lack of pigmentation. Leucism is similar to albinism but causes only a partial loss of pigment; animals with leucism retain pigment in their eyes and sometimes other parts of their body as well.
Because of Tal’ngay Dha’run’s coloring, he is unlikely to survive in the wild and is a permanent resident at the Australian Bat Clinic. His name (pronounced Talingi Darrun) was chosen in recognition of the indigenous Yugambeh Tribe and means “white wing.”
