Yooo thank you for your classy reply on visible vs "invisible" disability. (I'm a different anon btw.) My disability is invisible, until it's not (which I recognize comes with some privileges), but I thought your response was really balanced. Thank you!
honestly i hate this whole dichotomy between āvisibleā and āinvisibleā disabilities likeā¦ like abled people arenāt gonna fuckin devalue us either way?? theyāre not going to believe our disability is that bad/push abled supremacy onto us either way like
example: a person very close to me uses a wheelchair, and their old manager at their job always acted as if their wheelchair was a luxury, and told them to move around without it and stuff
another example: autistic people are super likely to receive police brutality because the government refuses to fucking train anybody in what to do when you somebody having a meltdown or god forbid, stimming
likeā¦ our disabilities are all different!! and some of us have privilege over each other, 100%!! i have able-bodied privilege for example ā but we have a common oppressor and thatās abled people and whilst i understand the needs for different kinds of resources, i think we should stop needlessly dividing our community into āinvisibleā and āvisibleā disabilities.
abled people are gonna deny us our basic human rights no matter HOW visible our disabilities are. when āinvisibleā, because they donāt believe our accessibility needs are real, when āvisibleā, because they donāt think our accessibility needs are relevant.
on top of that, i really think there are very few truly āinvisibleā disabilities. my disability is completely visible, but neurotypical people choose to ignore it.
