Severance brings up so many things wrong with how human use technology, mainly how we implement it.

Instead of using technology to make life easier or healthier, Lumen uses the technology to make literal slaves (the innies are people without any rights who are treated as subhuman).

We use AI to make art instead of having AI do chores so we can make art. Zuckerberg made FB to rank women and then to create an algorithm to show ads and sow divisive politics instead of creating inclusive communities. Musk stole Tesla and helped make EV “cool” only to market a product that is poorly made with gimmicky nonsense. (Not taking into account that the money he got from Tesla helped buy X and by extension helped the rise of alt right).

I love that Severance is wading into this in a medical sense, specifically pregnancy. With the rise of “trad-wives” (rich) women cosplaying as traditional homemakers (who wear cute dresses and bake bread but never clean toilets) I love that Severance is tackling pregnancy, especially of the elite.

Pregnancy is long, sometimes painful, often uncomfortable, but also you’re making a human! Same with giving birth. And instead of using science to help women give birth better or safer or solve pregnancy complications, they are just “having someone else do it” which is so lazy.

It’s also missing the point. Technology shouldn’t be used to take away the things that make us human, it should enhance it.
