You know what I think is really cool about language (English in this case)? It’s the way you can express “I don’t know” without opening your mouth. All you have to do is hum a low note, a high note, then another lower note. The same goes for yes and no. Does anyone know what this is called?

These are called vocables, a form of non-lexical utterance - that is, wordlike sounds that aren’t strictly words, have flexible meaning depending on context, and reflect the speakers emotional reaction to the context rather than stating something specific. They also include uh-oh! (that’s not good!), uh-huh and mm-hmm (yes), uhn-uhn (no), huh? (what?), huh… (oh, I see…), hmmn… (I wonder… / maybe…), awww! (that’s cute!), aww… (darn it…), um? (excuse me; that doesn’t seem right?), ugh and guh (expressions of alarm, disgust, or sympathy toward somebody else’s displeasure or distress), etc.

Every natural human language has at least a few vocables in it, and filler words like “um” and “erm” are also part of this overall class of utterances. Technically “vocable” itself refers to a wider category of utterances, but these types of sounds are the ones most frequently being referred to, when the word is used.

I actually have a serious answer for this. Popcorn was such a cheap but highly popular in demand food, and people loved it as a treat because it was fast, buttery, and salty. While a lot of other businesses at the time were failing because of the Great Depression, the business for production and sale of popcorn thrived because it was so cheap and popular. When WWII came around, other snacks and candies became harder and harder to obtain due to strict rations during wartime, which only encouraged the production and sale of popcorn to compensate. Which… no one seemed to mind. It was a tasty treat everyone loved, and it helped out agricultural businesses and so much more. In any case, popcorn became the official movie food because movie theatres, just like many other business venues during this particular era, weren’t really doing so well with as tight as things were. And with the popcorn business booming and its huge surge in popularity, movie theatres took advantage of the opportunity and started selling this tasty treat as concession. Not only did the sale of popcorn in movie theatres encourage people to come and buy movie tickets, but the concession sales for popcorn just by itself was enough to keep theatres in business. Basically, popcorn is the official movie food because the popcorn industry is what kept the movie industry afloat by keeping theatres and the demand for cinema alive.

Not ravenclaw related, but you're really genuine, so... Do you think some people don't have somebody out there waiting to fall into their life? Is it possible that some people don't have somebody out there that's a "Mr. Or Ms. Right" for them? If that makes any sense

First of all, thank you for the compliment !It is a difficult question and everyone has different views about whether soulmates/mr right exists. Personally, I think everyone can find someone who will fit them, have the same relationship needs and a great chemistry with. I personally my boyfriend who I share so many ideas with and am very similar to, first through friendship then romance.

But I also think there are more than one person who can be right. You don’t have to look for THE right person, you can sometimes find two or more people who fit you in your lifetime but the problem is often timing and how you two handle the relationship. If you let someone into your world, it can be the right person. If you cling too much on finding THAT right person, you might pass next to really great people.

So I want to believe in soulmates, this is a nice concept, but also I want to be realistic and open minded.

I'm a Ravenclaw and I get good grades usually. Around top 5 in my class but I'm still not happy with my grades. Any theories why?

I'm not a psychologist but you must be a perfectionist. It's hard to see that you have worked so hard and you think you deserve to be the very best. When you've worked your ass off, you might not accept making mistakes. I guess this is not the type of Ravenclaw I am. I am a bit perfectionist but always think I could've done better if I had started earlier but I'm happy with my grades because I don't like to start earlier anyway. i think it is said that many ravenclaws do take pride in their grades though. I'm really sorry that I cannot help you. Maybe another ravenclaw can help you with that :)Feel free to post replies !
