life wasn't kind— not to people like malachi corvinus. some would say his existence had been cursed long before he was born. as the unfortunate result of an illicit affair between an affluent businessman and his latest wide-eyed servant, any and all future prospects for the unborn child looked rather bleak. his mother was promptly relieved of her duties with a small pouch of coins and a demand for silence, all while the man she'd adored declared he'd never recognise a bastard. malachi came into this world wailing inconsolably, marked by burdens that were never his to bear. growing up amongst the children of topaz terrance taught him about the cruelties of not belonging. he was the odd one out, failing to connect with his peers. so he ventured off on his own, walked aimlessly through different parts of the valley. he spent hours observing people, blending into the shadows as he took notice of what others disregarded. gained knowledge he then used to disarm gullible strangers, to obtain what he needed in order to survive. the only peace granted to him was ironwood grove. the dead make a great companion for one who's grown accustomed to his own solitude. there, on his downtime, he reads books under great oak trees, meticulously writes down his observational findings, and occasionally allows his mind to wander... imagines living a life much different to his— one where he's wanted, one where he doesn't feel so lost.

— Just enough to catch my attention tonight, sir.

Not that he cared, he didn't. But André had seen the other around enough times to notice that he seemed to be especially tired on that night. And he was bored enough to ask about it. Small talk was good with costumers right? All he needed to do was keep the other talking more than him.

At the question however, the man closed his hand into a fist taking a deep breath. It had been years now, he couldn't get that subject be the best of him.

— More than you can imagine. This place is too..... quiet. What about yourself?

Yes, that was a good word for it.

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               he  snorted—  couldn’t  help  it,  really.    “    quiet  is  one  way  to  put  it,    ”    he  acknowledged,  raising  an  eyebrow  as  he  gulped  down  his  drink.  infuriating,  restrictive,  maddening,  despairing  were  words  he found much more  suitable.  yet  malachi  still  called  prism falls  home  through  gritted  teeth  and a broken heart as  that’s  what  his  mother  would’ve  wanted for him;  the  ghost  of  her  presence still lingering, chaining him down.    “   it  has  crossed  my  mind  once  or  twice.    ”    a  lie—  he  pondered  over  the  prospect  of  a  new  life  daily.    “    though  no  one  in  town  seems  to  agree  on  what  lies  beyond  the  valley.  there’s  no  place  for  me  to  go.    ”    he  hadn’t  known  of  anyone  who  had  left  and  didn’t  eventually return.  sure,  they  shared  grand  tales  of  foreign  lands  and  wild  adventures,  and somehow something had pulled them back.  it  left  him  discouraged and defeated,  unwilling  to  suffer  through  the  humiliation  of  leaving  all  he’s  ever  known—  no  matter  how  dreadful  the alternative.    “    one  day  i  will  leave,  i’m certain  of  it.  my options here are running out... i'd advise you to do the same.    ”

☆ﾟ*·ﾟ her head confused her sometimes, making her wonder what and who was real. most of her friends were human, but some of them, she wasn't too sure. there was one in particular, by the name of malachi whom allyson often saw in the graveyard. stuck amongst the graves, the gray color melding wonderfully with his skin, he had the blonde convinced that he was a ghost. because why else would you hang out around a graveyard and pretty much nowhere else. upon spotting him, she giggled and bounced toward him. when he spoke, his voice, in her head flowed through the winds, like a ghost. he was mysterious and interesting, and she often loved learning about things that he found interesting. "of course, my raven. i still haven't figured out why i think of a writing desk when i see you." with a pout, she twirled her hair, knowing that she was not a fan of rainstorms. they tended to stress her out, panic her, and trigger her hallucinations. shaking her head, allyson looked up at the sky. "who spoke of it?! the dodo bird or the white rabbit? they've been speaking in tongues lately. but i really do hate storms, raven. they're not good for me. can you tell it to go away?"

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               malachi’s  movements  halted,  a  contemplative  look  settling  upon  his  features  as  he  stopped  digging.  wiping  away  the sweat  that  had  accumulated  on  his  forehead  with  the  fabric  of  his  shirt,  he  turned  to  look  at  her.    “    a  writing  desk…  when  did  that  happen    ?    ”    he  didn’t  have  one  at  home,  finding them  too  costly.  hand  and  chin  came  to  rest  on top of  the  shaft  of  his  shovel.  malachi  had  long  foregone  any  insult  about  being  called  a  raven—  finding  some  odd  familiarity  there.    “    you  must  take  that  one  up  with  the  local  weather  forecaster.  though i must ask...  how  many  white  rabbits  have  attempted  to  strike  up  a conversation  with  you    ?    ”    he  wasn't certain whether  she  spoke  in  codes or riddles,  and  he  never  cared  to  ask.  there’d  been  much  stranger    (    and  more  threatening    )    figures around  town.    “    a  storm  will  do  some good  for  the  plants. don't be too concerned,  there’s  a place to shelter  within  the  cemetery  grounds if you can't make it home in time.  it’s  rather cozy,  even  if  i  say  so  myself.    ”

André didn't really care. He was there mostly to keep an eye than because he wanted to be. As the manager, he needed to stay in the stabilishment and always would make a point to stick around especially in the busiest hours of the day.

The figure he had adressed was one he had seen often at the Pub, and like him, he seemed to like to keep to himself. Today he seemed particularly tired. He would indulge.

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               it  took  malachi  several  seconds  to shift  his  gaze  from  the  crystal  glass  before  him.  a  deep  frown  emerged  upon hearing  andré’s  voice  ring  inside  his  ears, prompting him to bring his hands up to rub at his eyes. a rather futile attempt at lulling himself right out of his thoughts.  only  then  malachi  smiled—  no  genuine sincerity  nor  amusement  hiding behind  the motion.  “    good  lord, do  i  look  that poor today  ?  ”   he'd  grown  familiar  with  the whispers  surrounding  andré  and  his  reputation,  resulting in  the  black  diamond  brewers  becoming an  ideal  spot  to  unwind.  no  one  asked  questions,  no soul even noticed  him  in-between  the  boisterous  crowds  and  lively  music. 

his  shoulders  slanted in defeat,  head  lowered  as  he  sighed.  staring up  at  the  other,  malachi  shook  his  head.  “   you  ever  wish  you  could  escape  this  place  ?  ”

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               “   you aren't considering turning back now, are you ? ”  a  roguish grin  stretched  across his  lips,  a  mischievous  glint  in  his  eyes.  both of them would undoubtedly fall in  great  trouble  if  they  got  caught,  but  malachi  had long turned apathetic towards any risks his questionable endeavours entailed.  his  eyes  narrowed,  holding  his  hand  out  for  her  to  take.   “  what  do  you  say, susie  ?  would you like to have some fun ?  ”

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               she’d  always  been  rather  odd.  elusive  and  trapped  inside  that little head of hers—  reflecting a  strange  world.  malachi  couldn’t  quite  grasp  her,  barely made sense  of  the  stories  she  told.  and yet  he’d  been  intrigued,  attentively  listening  to  her tales whenever she stopped by.  picked  up  on  details  that  continued  to  haunt his own psyche for days to come.  “   back  so  soon  ?  ”   he  was  at  his  regular  spot in ironwood grove,  a place she'd usually be able to find him.  “  they  spoke  of  a pretty nasty rainstorm tonight, so it's best not make things too late today.  ”

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               he’d  been  quiet,  brooding,  arms  crossed  over  his  chest  as  he  leaned  against  the  thick,  brick  walls  of  the  cobalt  forge.  while  not  particularly  an  unusual  sight,  the  prominent  frown  etched  into  his  forehead  spoke  of  deeper  troubles;  ones  he  hadn’t  been  willing  to  share.  malachi had  grown  accustomed  to  roni  providing  a  type  of  refuge  he  couldn’t  find  elsewhere—  the only person he trusted  in  this  god  forsaken  town.  yet today even her presence could offer no relief.  “  roni,  ”  he hesitated, sucking on his teeth.  “  there's something i need to ask.  ”

⸻        ･ﾟ                 ♱               like  a  month  to  a  flame.  malachi  couldn’t  help  it—  not  to  way  his  skin  buzzed  whenever  she  was  near,  nor  the  way  he  yearned  to  remain  in  her  vicinity.  to bask  in  her  energy,  lay  completely  at  her  mercy.  meeting morgana had rekindled a part within himself he'd long given up on. purpose and devotion both lit aflame; instantaneously and unexpectedly. sensing her presence before recognising her silhouette near the gates of ironwood grove, malachi promptly abandoned his work as his body appeared to move on its own accord. “  miss  hawthorne.  ”  a polite greeting,  accompanied by a tight-lipped smile. he  appeared  before  her  with  his  hands  clasped  behind  his  back,  dressed  in  his  work  attire.  “  i  hadn’t  anticipated  your  return  so soon.  would  you  allow  me  to escort  you on this promenade ?  ”
