Ravenswatch is a rogue-like that has quite interesting dynamics between its playable characters, as well as very angsty lore. If you're anything like me, then that description is already a very big draw into the game! But how to get into it, when you either aren't very big into playing games or have trouble with rogue-likes?
That's what I'm here to help with today!
A great first step is, of course, watching gameplay videos! Positive4ce, for example, makes a lot of great videos. @calebs-hangout-corner and @the-cursed-virtouso likely have more channel recommendations if this is a good option for you. A downside of watching regular runs of the game is that they're typically made with little regard for the interactions between characters. While watching one of these videos will help you get a feel for the game, and quite possibly teach you how to play it at the start, it might not let you get a feel for the characters themselves.
To get a good understanding of the characters and the story behind the game, listening to the memoirs could really help! The memoirs are unlocked in-game as you progress with each individual character, and provide insight into their specific backstories and, sometimes, their relationships with other characters. They're told in different formats; ex: the most popular format seems to be letters, but Melusine's is a song. However! The memoirs can be seen as a spoiler, since they're meant to be unlocked during gameplay. If that doesn't deter you, then I suggest listening to them!
A good playlist that has recordings of the memoirs can be found here. In addition, @zayneinsituations has also done us all the kindness of transcribing the memoirs right here on Tumblr, The masterpost can be found here.
If you want to specifically know about the relationships between the characters, you can either look at the clips I post of character interactions, or go read them in @the-cursed-virtouso's dialogue catalog! If you have any specific things you're looking for and you're having trouble finding them, then feel free to send an ask!
If anyone else has any suggestions on getting into the game, let me know! I'll be very happy to update this with additional tips and such.
AMAZING feeling of getting into something because a specific character seems tailor made to your taste and when actually interacting with them that theory is confirmed
i really fuck with it when my oomfs start their posts in media res. they'll open it with a phrase like "it's just funny because..." and then i look at their blog to see what's funny and. nothing.
I'm not mad about Merlin or anything but I do wish they did a fairy tale character or that they finally introduced the child on a beast's back from Romeo's memoir. I had really been hoping they'd do something besides the obvious pick for what their teaser was, esp. since we already have a lot of Aruthurian content in the same (literally the entire 3rd level). Rewatching the trailer, I do think he's neat. But we couldn't have gotten him later?
You know maybe the meta reason why Franz and Aladdin were paired to be friends in the game is because Robert Browning’s Piper when talking about the places he’s been only mentions Asia and the one specific country he mentions is Iraq with the talk of being in Bagdhad which is in West Asia and Aladdin is West Asian in this game
Or maybe it’s like the world’s biggest coincidence and they perhaps didn’t think all that deeply about it and the only reason why they are so close is cause the personalities they made meshed extremely well
i do not minmax i do not play competitively i do not optimize my build i do not grind i do not topscore i do not give a shit about leaderboards. i play to have fun and if im not having fun i go do something else
