The Stanhope House, based in Stanhope NJ, has been a key part in the history of the blues in New Jersey, with just about every great blues act, past and present, having been through there at least once and now it has come time for the establishment to changes hands once again.
As they say on the official website:
If walls could talk, the old walls of The Stanhope House would have some unbelievable stories to tell. Built in the 1790’s, we take great pride in keeping the building as original as possible. From the wood floors to the original tin ceiling, and everything in between, the building is a time capsule of musical history. The club was the stomping grounds and post-show hangout of a massive array of beloved blues legends. When you come to an event at The Stanhope House, you will be gazing upon the same stage where Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Paul Butterfield, and John Lee Hooker had all once stood. We continue making history today as John Mayall, James Cotton, Joan Osborne, Rusted Root, The Original Wailers, Rakim, Mobb Deep, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Fishbone, Taproot, Aaron Carter, Gilbert Gottfried, and Judy Gold take the stage, just to name a few.
Whilst talking to Daily Record the venue owner Jon Klein (71) said that he now spends all his time living in the apartment above the venue all the time, “…. My wife, thank God, comes and visits me on the weekend, and I get home to see my grandkids maybe one day a week. It’s starting to get to be too much.”
I have worked with Jon Klein on a number of different projects, including the pilot for a tv series titled “Live From The Stanhope House” which was designed to showcase the variety of talent that performs there as well as promote the venue itself. You can watch a short preview for the show below:
