Do you have any tips for those that want to be better writers?

1. Read. The more you read, the more you find out what you like, the more you can eventually write what you want to read.

2. Analyze what you read. Try to figure out why you liked it, what made it work, what the writer actually did to create the effect that pleased you. Take it apart.

3. Imitate what you like. This is how some people learn to paint. By recreating a great painting, someone can learn the technique that was used to create the painting. Writing is a different medium, so copying is different. You can do it in two ways: a) write the same story in your own words, so you can see what mechanics of the plot were important and how the style of writing changes how the story feels, b) try writing a different story in the author’s voice, eg, write a Schitt’s Creek fanfic the way Jane Austen would, or write an HP fanfic the way Virginia Woolf would. Either of these methods helps you figure out how the stories and authors you love create the effects they do, and it also helps you find your own voice.

4. Write. If you write enough, you can treat what you’ve written like what you’ve read–analyze what worked about it and what didn’t, then write it again until it’s something you like better.

5. Do it for yourself. The best writing is something you recognize as a part of yourself that you’ve never seen expressed before. You can’t write that if you’re writing what you think someone else will love, or if you’re writing because you want to be popular. Try to find the deepest parts of yourself; try to bring them to the page; try to do them justice. Someone will read you and see you and love you, but you have to trust that you are worthy of love before baring your soul, and that can be the hardest thing to do.
