"no." he said sharply in reply, his eyes darkening. "he is not yet eighteen. blue bloods are not to have familiars until that age, it isn’t until then that the need for blood overtakes the need for human food. blue bloods have been breaking the rules more and more often. soojung never had a familiar." his voice was sharp with worry and he glanced over at the younger male, his eyes worried.
"… i was supposed to protect her." he finally said softly. "it was my duty. to protect her, from anyone discovering her, and from anyone who wished to harm her. i failed." the words were so much harsher coming out of his mouth, his voice bitter. "i failed her. and she died. permanently. it wasn’t even returning to the repository. she’s gone. forever.” he choked again, the reality of what he had done hitting him hard and he tensed up, his arms wrapped around himself now.
he had failed her, so much more badly than he’d ever failed anyone before. she had lived for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years before she’d had this lifetime with him, and now… because of him, she would never, never have another year again.
he had taken her immortality away.
"wh-what?"
how come ilhoon had told him that he needed him? had it all be a lie? a ruse? he wasn't sure anymore and he literally just froze in his actions, the tea being lowered to his lap and he literally just sat there, shell-shocked, his eyes wide behind his glasses before he ducked his head, auburn hair flopping into his face and he could feel his eyes being filled with tears, his vision blurry. had ... he been lied to ...? he felt as though everything he ever knew was crashing down around him and he reached up quickly to wipe at his eyes.
hongbin nodded through everything that the elder said to him, his mind not any of it and he numbly raised a hand to touch it gently to taekwoon's forearm when he heard his voice get choked up, though he wasn't even thinking about that anymore. had ilhoon lied to him? he had been one of his oldest friends before he became his familiar -- but if blue bloods truly didn't need a familiar until they were eighteen then ... what?
his eyes were blank as they gazed at the floor in front of him, quiet. he was glad his tea was mostly gone or he probably would've dropped it or something and he sits there, half in shock and half in the sheer agony that someone he had trusted so much -- with his life, both figuratively and literally -- would do something like this to him.
"... he lied to me ...?"
