@sunfyred asked : ❝ do you ever feel so alone that you could implode and no one would know ? ❞
“Sometimes,” Margaery lied.
Loneliness was a foreign thing to her. She'd never known it's like, whether among Lord Tyrell's daughters, her cousins in Oldtown, or the royal court. Company of all kinds was easy for her to find, whenever and wherever she desired it. Admitting to such would only squander this rare opening offered by the king's lament question.
“I am far from home, Your Grace. For all its intrigues, King’s Landing is still a strange place to me—filled with people I barely know and who certainly do not know me. Not truly." She sighed, considering. "But that's mostly homesickness. Perhaps it's not the same."
The half-smile she offered him was not pitying. Pity was too blunt a tool, graceless and only ever applied to do the greatest damage with the least precision. Instead, it softened her usual courtly mask—pleasant but mostly unreadable—to something more open. Vulnerable and quietly encouraging. It was an invitation, one she was curious to see if he would accept.
"I think many people here are lonely. It's just...not something spoken of. I’m sorry that you would count yourself among them. It is no small thing.”

@rcsegilded asked, ❛ when were you going to tell me? ❜
the day's letter-writing had been set aside some time ago to accommodate time for the soon-to-be-queen, who would always remain her granddaughter, regardless of which crown she wore 'pon her head; that disregard was evident in her tone as she plucked grape from stem. ❛ doesn't this accursed place have the courtesy to separate the damned things? ❜ she flicked the juice of one from her fingertips, the fruit now mangled by unsteady hands. ❛ when you wed the little monster, see to it. steal the scullery maids from highgarden if you must——i'll be sure that your father allows it. ❜ pushing the bowl away, olenna leaned back into her chair, nearly dwarfed by its size, voice no less commanding. ❛ and specificity would help greatly, my dear. what have i kept from you this time? ❜
Margaery longed to replicate the disaffected air her grandmother ( @harrenhcl ) presented to the world. It was a marvelous tool, sharp and swift enough to fluster and frustrate with a seemingly-careless word. She'd spent a lifetime watching and learning at the old woman's knee but had never been able to truly mirror the expressions or tone of voice--no matter the hours spent practicing in a looking glass or on some poor unsuspectinv servant. Perhaps she would be less piqued by the affect, had she seen any meaningful success.
"Sansa Stark--they're marrying her to the Imp. Tomorrow." Strange whisperings of some rushed preparations from the kitchens were brought into sharp context when her girl in the laundry had confirmed the readying of two bride's cloaks--one in the crimson-and-gold of House Lannister, the other the grey-and-white of House Stark.
"She joined us at luncheon not two days past, asked all these questions about Highgarden and the hedge maze and Willas..." She let the words trail off, feeling oddly breathless with frustration and a burgeoning sorrow. "Tell me you didn't know. That you didn't let me fill her head with pretty promises we never meant to keep." Tell me you weren't hiding it from me, too.

❛ If you step any closer, you’re going to find out how much self-control I don’t have. ❜
❛ I hate that I notice you, even when I’m trying not to. ❜

dance of the dragons / house of the dragon
Set during the Targaryan known as the Dance of the Dragons, as written in Fire & Blood by GRRM and portrayed in HBO's House of the Dragon.
In the years preceding King Viserys’s death, the senior branch of House Tyrell was already withering. The previous Lord of Highgarden had himself been one of two sons born to his line and the only to survive to adulthood. He had six children—all daughters, save for the infant boy born just before the start of the coming conflict.
The junior branch, in stark contrast, was thriving. Mace Tyrell was first cousin to his lord and steward of Highgarden. He enjoyed a close relationship with Lord Tyrell and a was trusted advisor in the early years of his lordship. However, tension between the two men would grow along with their families. While Lord Tyrell and his wife struggled to provide an heir, Mace and Alerie were blessed with four children in less than ten years: three sons and daughter. All would become fixtures of the court at Highgarden and well-known throughout the wider society of the Reach, often outshining their cousins from the senior branch.
Lord and Lady Tyrell both came to resent Mace’s family, a sentiment which would eventually turn to suspicion and distrust. By 100 AC, any affection between the two men was well and truly dead. Lord Tyrell even considered naming a new steward but Mace’s influence—and his children’s renown—throughout the Reach posed a significant obstacle. His dismissal would only serve to encourage already-circulating rumors and questions over which branch had truly produced the future of House Tyrell.
Margaery was raised and educated alongside Lord Tyrell’s two youngest daughters Ellyn and Elyssa. She was close to them as a young girl, even as she outpaced them in their studies and found her stride at court, but the relationships would become strained as their fathers’ feud intensified. She would spend more time away from Highgarden in the later years of her adolescence, often visiting the Hightower relations to whom Alerie remained close.
Lord Tyrell would pass in early 103 AC, leaving his wife to act as Lady Regent for their infant son, Lyonel. Under her stewardship, House Tyrell would declare neutrality in the war between the Dragons. Despite the offical stance of her house, Margaery’s experience of the Dance varies greatly based on the scenarios below.

blackfyre rebellions / akotsk
Set primarily in the decades following the first Blackfyre Rebellion, as written in the Dunk & Egg novellas by GRRM and HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Mace is younger brother to Lord Leo “Longthorn” Tyrell and resides with his family at Highgarden, alonside the other lower branches of their house. As the middle child of five, he contributes heavily to the competitive atmosphere that has formed the between his siblings and their respective children. Only the occasional intervention from Lord Leo himself has prevented the rivalries from turning hostile. He insists that his nephews train at arms together and even takes some of them on as squires when they are old enough, including both Garlan and Loras in time.
Lord Leo—having only sons himself—tends to dote on his nieces, Margaery in particular. She’s the eldest of his siblings’ daughters and spends the most time with her lord uncle, due to her close relationship with Loras during his years as a squire and her own father’s encouragement. She enjoys a close relationship with Lady Tyrell as well and does not hesitate to leverage it with her many cousin’s at court. Mace’s hope is that his brother and sister-by-law’s fondness for her will lead to an advantageous match in her future—with the other Reacher families or even beyond.
The Tourney at Ashford
Margaery, Garlan, and Loras travel with their uncle’s party to Ashford, where her brothers mean to compete in the melee and joust respectively. Though it’s smaller than some, Margaery is never one to miss a tourney and the chance to mingle with other nobles. She spends some time attending Lord Ashford’s daughter (a girl six years her junior) but can mostly be found in the Tyrell pavilion when she’s not spectating tourney events.

The arrival of a party from Driftmark was only notable in the wake of the most recent news out of High Tide. Lord Corlys was at death's door--or perhaps dead already, if the most outlandish of rumours could be believed. The very sight of the Velaryon seahorse witin the Red Keep was curious at best and alarming at worst. The intrigue drew out even some of the most reclusive of courtiers, all flocking to the entrance hall in hopes of catching a glimpse.
Margaery lingered in the wings for a time, only half listening to the whispering around her. She focused her gaze on the queen as she greeted the visitors, straining to catch the formation of even a single word spoken too softly to reach her ears. A silver-haired man in the Velaryon colors stepped forward to speak for his kin, bowing and kissing Queen Alicent’s outstretched hand. He was unfamiliar to Margaery but she knew him by his age and sigil—two white seahorses upon a sea green field—if not his face. Ser Vaemond of House Velaryon, younger brother to the Sea Snake himself. More than curious.
The gathered assembly began to disperse as the Velaryon retinue was led further into the castle, most retreating back into the corridors to further fan the flames or rumour. Margaery, for her part, pushed against the flow of the crowd to the center of the hall and towards the spot where Ser Geayne still lingered. She did not look at him, her eyes still fixed upon the queen as she ascended the grand staircase.
“What do you make of that, cousin?” she asked, voice low enough that only he would hear.
