history & headcanons
Born into an extremely loving family, tragedy struck the Martin household early into Roxanne’s life as her mother died during childbirth, leaving her to be raised by her father. He’s the best dad she could ever imagine and she never felt as though she was missing anything growing up, but she does carry around guilt surrounding her mother’s death. No matter how often her father refutes it, Roxanne firmly believes that it’s her fault her mother is dead rather than any incompetencies of the doctor’s.
Mother’s Day is the hardest day of the year for Roxanne. While everyone else she knows is celebrating their mothers with brunch and flowers, she spends the day visiting her mother’s gravestone with her father. She becomes solemn and recluse the week leading up to Mother’s Day — it’s one of the few times she doesn’t like being around other people.
Despite being so petite, her father is an extremely large and intimidating man, and happens to be extremely protective of his daughter. While she’s a complete daddy’s girl and sees him to be a total softie, anyone else looks at him and sees a man that could snap them in half. He has been known to intimidate any guy that comes to her house, whether it’s to pick her up for a date or to work on a project for Biology class. She is a little worried that she’ll never have a serious relationship because her dad will threaten and intimidate anyone that might be interested in her.
While she was one of the most popular girls in her high school, Roxanne doesn’t quite understand her popularity. She never considered herself to be particularly cool. She doesn’t have the coolest clothes or hang with the popular crowd. Her popularity comes instead from the fact that she seems like the ultimate girl next door. Cute, smart, and kind to everyone, it’s difficult for people to dislike her. She always has a smile and a kind word for everyone.
She’s extremely chatty. Whether it’s talking about last night’s homework, the movie she saw last weekend, the newest song on the radio, or the dream she had last night, Roxanne can make conversation with anyone about anything. The only time she ever got in trouble in school was for talking during class — it drove teachers crazy because no matter who they put her next to, she was still happy to chat. The only time she can’t carry on a conversation is when she has a crush, and it drives her crazy. She wants to come across cool and interesting, but she becomes tongue tied every time. It’s like every single word she knows falls completely
Besides being born right before Valentine’s Day, Roxanne’s hopeless romantic side comes from watching countless romantic comedies with her dad. For a big, scary looking guy, he’s a complete softie and the two of them have a movie night almost every weekend. From You’ve Got Mail to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and everything in between, she’s seen it all and can’t wait for the day someone comes to sweep her off her feet.
While she’s never found her prince charming, Roxanne has been on plenty of dates and has been sentimental about every relationship she’s been in, no matter how short lived it turned out to be. She collects mementos from all her dates and relationships and keeps them in a box under her bed. It’s something she’s never told anyone about, not even her closest friends, but she often pulls the box out when she’s feeling sad or lonely to reminisce. No matter how her relationships ended, she looks back at them all fondly.
She still remembers the first time she heard a Powerline song when she was in middle school. Eye to Eye came on the radio as he dad drove her to school and she couldn’t stop smiling or dancing in the front seat. While she loves all pop music, something about Powerline’s music was different. His music spoke to her, got into her veins, made her feel completely invincible. The first time she saw his music video, sitting cross legged on the floor as she waited for it to finally come on the tv, she knew she had to dance like that. Roxanne insisted her dad enroll her in dance lessons the second the music video ended and she’s never looked back.
While she considers herself to be Powerline’s biggest fan — she has posters on her wall, every single lyric to his songs memorized, and sometimes even posts in a forum online — she tries to keep that fangirl side of her a secret. She’s not embarrassed to be such a big Powerline fan, but she does worry about what other people think of her. The opinions of other people carry a lot of weight with her, and being a complete and utter fangirl isn’t cool. Worried to ruin her reputation, she only lets her closests friends in on the dorky, easily excitable part of her. But not even her desire to keep cool, calm and collected can stop her from dancing if a Powerline song comes on, no matter where she is.
Roxanne is studying business in college, but she has absolutely no interest in it. All she wants in life is to be a professional dancer, but her father, wanting a steady, financially stable life for his daughter refused to pay for college if she pursued the degree in the arts. Wanting to make him happy, she agreed to study business but she still plans to pursue a career in dance once she graduates.
Even though she’s unhappy with her major, Roxanne is extremely studious and doesn’t like to accept any grade lower than an A. She received a B once on a 10th grade math test and cried for nearly an hour when she got home. She does all her homework on weekends before going out and having fun with her friends, and can often be found leading study groups around exam time — she wants to see all her friends and classmates succeed too.
Roxanne uses baking as her main form of stress relief. Something about the precise measurements and beautiful decorations has a calming effect on her. Whenever she gets overwhelmed with school or life she searches for a new recipe to bake. The next day, everyone in her dorm is gifted with cookies, cupcakes, muffins, or pastries. She also loves baking shows — if she doesn’t actually have the time to bake, she’ll put on one of her favourite baking shows to relax.
She loves rain and thunderstorms and can often be found staring wistfully out the window when it’s raining, lost in her own daydream or pretending she’s the star of a music video. Roxanne also believes that kissing in the rain is the most romantic thing a couple can do and can’t wait until it happens for her one day.
Being raised by a single parent, Roxanne didn’t always have a lot of money so she started frequenting thrift shops whenever she needed a new outfit. She thinks there’s something super romantic about clothes that have history to them and she has the patience to sift through thrift stores for the really good finds. She taught herself how to sew so she could tailor her new outfits, and even started to re-purpose some of her mom’s old clothes so she’ll always have a piece of her mom with her.
