WIP Wednesday (or whenever).

Got tagged by a wonderful @rdekarios who shared her own fantastic snippet. This one is not so much of WIP as it is a small indulgence piece that I made after creating this photoset. Sometimes I create VP for the things I have already written, sometimes it's the other way around. What can I say. I go where my heart leads me.

The garden is mostly dark. Not empty. Never empty. Small lights drift between the hanging leaves, blue-white and soft as trapped stars, illuminating petals only long enough to make them seem unreal before the shadows take them back. The air smells of damp moss, night-blooming flowers, and the faint mineral coolness of old stone.

Deia stands so close that Gale can feel the warmth of her through the thin space between them. Her hand rests at his shoulder, fingers curled lightly into the fabric of his shirt, not holding him there and yet making departure feel impossible.

Gale’s hand settles at her waist. He does it slowly. Carefully. Gives her every chance to step away. She does not. Instead, her fingers slide higher, into his hair, and the restraint he has been holding like a glass vessel develops its first fatal crack.

“Deia,” he says, and her name is half warning, half surrender.

Her eyes lift to his. In the dimness, her silver gaze catches the little wandering lights and keeps them.

“Yes?”

He has several answers. Too many, perhaps. Something eloquent. Something worthy. Something about the ache of surviving long enough to stand here with her while the night flowers open around them. What leaves him is simpler. Ruinously honest.

“I love you.”

Her expression stills. For a heartbeat, the whole garden seems to still with her. The moth-lights pause in their wandering. The leaves stop whispering. Even the shadows lean close, shameless things. Then Deia rises onto her toes and kisses him.

It is soft at first. Almost solemn. Her mouth finds his with a care that feels like grief learning to unclench its hands. Gale draws her nearer, palm warm at the small of her back, and she answers by threading her fingers deeper into his hair.

The kiss changes. It deepens the way night deepens, by degrees, until the world is suddenly full of it. Until her body is pressed to his and his breath is hers and the garden has become nothing but dark leaves, pale lights, and the impossible fact of being wanted without fear. When they part, it is only by an inch. Deia’s lashes lift slowly.

“Say it again,” she whispers.

Gale’s thumb brushes over her hip, reverent and helpless.

“I love you.”

Her mouth trembles toward a smile.

“Again.”

He does.

And the night, generous for once, keeps every word.

Spent ages trying to find a decent snippet from my main story to no avail, so this is a bit of a different one here. From a secret project that I have personally been holding up by being... well, me 😅

You keep your head down as you walk, counting each step as it thumps through your skull, as though the continuous pattern will help to ground you in a real moment and keep your mind from wandering too far. Not too many steps now. Almost out of the drizzle. Almost away from the wind's chill. Almost able to ignore how to city hums with an oppressive indifference around you.

You envy them all. The students smoking cigarettes outside of a bar, carefree chatter spilling out to the street from inside. The father and his two young children, holding hands and sharing moments from their day with each other as they walk down the street. The couple huddling under an umbrella, arms wrapped tightly around one another. Even the budding spring petals bursting through tree branches seem intent on mocking you—a sure reminder that time presses on, even while your entire life falls apart invisibly.

Your apartment looms closer, its weathered and chipped facade betraying the years it has stood there. It might have been a large family home once, abundant with good memories. Now it's split into three apartments and yours—the top floor—has been abandoned for some time. It's a little rough around the edges. There's paint peeling from every corner and floors scuffed with furniture that was moved around in it long before you arrived here, but you got a good deal on it, considering the part of the city it's in. You're not sure it really feels like home yet.

Then again, you've been so unmoored for so long at this point, it's hard to feel that anywhere will ever feel like home again.

You manage to shove the door open—it's still stiff from disuse, fixing it just another thing to add to your mental to-do list—and when it is finally closed behind you, you lean back against it and let out a deep sigh. You're not entirely sure whether it's one of relief or despair.

Shivering against the cold, you check the thermostat. It's on. The heaters are working. Still, there's a distinct kind of chill to the air. It clings to the walls stubbornly, unwilling to be chased away. It was here first, after all, the place so long abandoned that the cold and damp were its only inhabitants for such a long time. You are the intruder. The interloper trying to take its place and chase it off.

Perhaps it can sense that you need the company.

Perhaps it can sense that you have little warmth in your heart at the moment either.

I DID IT it's still Wednesday for another two hours, and I'm sliding over the plate to post a WIP ON A WEDNESDAY FOR ONCE!!! I am trying my very best to be vague and not best spoilers about the Netherbrain fight, but anyone who has read my Durgetash fic knows the very particular psychic cruelty that the Brain inflicted on Kass, so...

It was dim, but not dark; the area was illuminated by familiar light runes, achingly familiar even after she knew they had been crushed to dust over a century ago. They glowed that same purple-white light that all the lights of Ched Nasad did, and she still knew the shape of the rune etched into the crystals, her fingers twitching with the urge to trace those same old lines that she knew better than the shape of her own heart.

Fingers. She looked down, and the uncomfortably knobbly four-fingered hands of her illithid body were gone. Instead, she looked down upon the smooth blue-purple skin of her drow hands, dotted with all the little scars she had accumulated over her lifetime. The little freckles that were painted across the back of her hand, more prominent after months in the sunshine. The nails, pale and blue, with a little dirt beneath them.

She looked up, and found herself at an archway overlooking some nondescript street in the lower levels of Ched Nasad. There were the usual work-hour crowds outside, coming and going within her field of view, and from the noise around her, she felt as if she were almost certainly in an inn or a tavern. It was noisy, and it smelled... it smelled like home. It smelled like a place she hadn't even known she'd forgotten, lost to time and buried both in her memories and beneath the millions of tons of stone that the Jaezrad Chaulssin had heaped upon it. That particular smell of cave damp, the smell of cold earth, of a hundred thousand bodies or more living packed together in such close quarters. The incense burning at every corner shrine to Lolth. The sizzle and tang of street carts with their open flames, grilling mushrooms and lizards, the char of the smoke with nowhere to go in the cavern but up to the other layers. Acrid and musty and damp and smoky, the smell of a living metropolis, the smell of home.

She could never go back.

"Hello, Medi."

She turned around slowly, even though she knew who she would see behind her. The room was empty, as if it had been reserved for their private use, the noise that had carried over from the main taproom suddenly muted; at the table, alone, was her youngest sister. There were two wine glasses set out, and in the centre of the table was a Sava set, assembled as if the game was already in play.

Rhyme stood there for an agonising moment, trying to swallow down the wad of emotions in her throat. "No one has called me Medi in a very long time," she finally said quietly, her voice hoarse.

Gosh, when was the last time someone yelled the name Medi? Was it at a particularly devastating point in Rhyme's past? Hmm...

Yes I know, I know, Mystryl is technically dead at this time, but she was still (as Mystra is now) the embodiment of the Weave, so I put her old symbol instead of the newest Mystra one, as a marker of Gale's love for magic, rather than Mystra herself. And I've swapped the original design from Mucha to have a good view of the orb.

So. Hi. I got really, really, overly invested in the Companion Jamie collection.

For some reason, my brain decided it would not rest until I gathered some "in-game footage" of Jamie's recruitment scene (rather than, y'know, writing it, which would make more sense and take less time!). This required me to watch some Blender tutorials and make a unique pose "mod" and PUT IT IN THE GAME AND TAKE SCREENSHOTS AND EDIT STUFF AND

*deep breath*

Anyway. I'm making a little video and adding captions to things as my next steps. I fear I have lost a few sanity points while working on this but, fuck it, at least I sorta know Blender now. I already have 3 pose ideas and I am not sure my brain will let me ignore them.

I think their left arm looks kinda twisty but let's just pretend it's the jacket, it actually might be the jacket, but I don't know for sure and I don't care anymore. It's my first Blender project and it suits my purposes and I am proud of it regardless
