I still haven’t read HoO as im reading the books in order so this might have been obvious but I was under the impression that Piper McLean had grown up in California from like birth and was away from her Cherokee culture and didn’t know much about her family and stuff and her dad just didn’t want her to know but…

She deadass lived in the heart of it. 💀

She lived a good chunk of her life in Oklahoma specifically Tahlequah, Cherokee Country bro.

Her Grandpa Tom told her stories and most likely showed her other stuff like stomp and powwows. She would have known what being Cherokee is cuz of she grew up around them. She would’ve known the songs. She would’ve known the dances. She already knows the stories, and most likely knew the language, even if she knew a few words.

Piper would’ve had a good understanding of being an Indigenous person in America. Not necessarily as a Cherokee person but an Indigenous one.

Even when she was bullied for it when she was in school in California, that foundation does not go away. And it’s clear she hold that part of her very closely.

Like Tristan continued to teach her even after his father died and they moved away. Like he makes a connection with the Greek stories to Cherokee stories when he makes the connection of Enceladus to Judaculla.

Why is everyone acting like she was trying to reconnect with her culture when she never really disconnected in the first place.

One thing the TBOSAS movie did so right was having Mister and Missus Plinth sit on stage in Heavensbee Hall during the Reaping.

like, yes, from a plot perspective it’s because of the already-established Plinth Prize. It’s Strabo’s “big surprise” and, in theory, he would be getting up on stage to announce the winner.

BUT from a more symbolic standpoint, it puts the Plinths in the position of the tributes. One boy and one girl from a district, brought up on the stage in front of everyone and singled out as Different, as People Who Are Never Coming Home. Fighting for their lives in a different arena, the arena of high society and public opinion. It’s a great way to show us that, for all their wealth and power, they’re still District, still other, and are still seen in the exact same way as the tributes.

And don’t get me started on the symbolism of them othered on stage, but Sejanus is in the crowd with all the Capitol citizens. Because, after more than half his life in the Capitol and despite his resistance to assimilation — in some ways, he’s more Capitol than they can ever be.

Most of it was talking about the Plinth prize but Sejanus was mainly mentioned by Coriolanus.
