Charlie is great, she's just following her dreams, leave the poor thing alone- Lucifer said as he tried not to pass out from exhaustion while bleeding on the floor from multiple stab wounds. *Alastor long dead in the corner (died as a result of long-term neglect)
He's always been portrayed as a tragic character in the show and rightfully so since according to Biblical reference he was an angel beautiful, wise and beloved, God's favorite. And he's lost everything, several times by now.
He lost his home, his brothers and sisters (or I'm assuming that's the relationship that heavenborn have), his life all for Lilith and a well intentioned foolish mistake, giving the apple to Eve. And while we don't know much about Lilith, we see Charlie's storybook seems to be according to what we see of the real Lucifer in the show: energetic, chaotic, probably a weirdo (god bless the poor souls that had to review his ideas for creation if the first thing we saw him do was a fire breathing duck lmao).
But he's clearly an innocent soul, most angels seem to be (because after the exterminations who the hell but an angel would think yes a gift basket is very important) they're not in danger by any source, can always find food, have no predators, no strife of any sorts, of course they'd be very innocent, what reason could the first beings in creation have to think there's anyone with ill intentions?
It's heartbreaking seeing Lucifer's gift was made with 100% pure intentions, give humanity freedom to be whoever they wanted to be. I'd like to think Lilith because it'd be her people (very much like Charlie thinks) and Lucifer liked they idea of giving humanity what he could barely afford: free will. But his "hubris" or pride was think he could handle what free will implies and that even free will could be affected by malice.
I'm not saying the punishment is "unfair" (although I very much want to) but... I think that casting him to hell and making him helpless against all of humanities psychopaths for something that wasn't malicious about was perhaps too cruel. At least give him the means to defend himself. Of course he's been losing his mind with grief, he lost it all in the fall, all except Lilith.
She's everything he has.... until Charlie.
Skip forward to what according to what is pressumably 200 years prior to the show and Lucifer is King of Hell and Lilith seems to be Queen of Sinners, I'm assuming out of wanting to protect Lucifer since he's literally defenseless against one if they decided to go crazy on him.
And Charlie is born. Based on background details of both HH and HB it is implied Lucifer started healing up a bit and we see portraits and the little flashback in More than Anything that he's smiling again. But, that stll means his support group is 6 work colleagues, and 4 members of the other hell family which aren't even fully cannon, and his wife who left, and Charlie who doesn't talk to him.
But it seems Lucifer never really snaps out of his grief of falling, he's clearly severely depressed, for several thousands of years. But how couldn't he? He's locked away with his biggest mistake, in a position he didn't ask to be inand fulfulling a role made to punish him. Surrounded by the worst his well-intentioned (but gullible) gift caused. It's like living in a realm of those voices at 3am reminding you of when the cashier said enjoy your meal and you said you too, but on steroids. So he's stuck with his a realm made from his guilt.
We don't know at what point it, but seems Lilith starts growing tired... and I can't blame her, given she lost way less than him (like, c'mon... it was Lucifer and hell, or dating Adam... ew. Easy choice), and she can actually be a source of change within sinners and it's something she chooses to do unlike Lucifer who kinda has to do what he was appointed to. I don't blame her for getting tired of it, but I can very much feel for Lucifer.
And again, we don't know when they grew apart, because she disappeared around 8 years prior to the show's present. But in More than Anything we see her taking a very little Charlie away from her dad and he just smiles sadly, so it is very possible although not confirmed that their relationship was starting to falter since she was little and maybe that's why the first season makes so many daddy issues jokes and she went to live with Lilith or simply they started spending so much time apart. BUT I'm hoping and praying that she wasn't leaving with Charlie to isolate him but more like "come sweetie, your dad needs rest" or something sweet to protect them from Charlie seeing her dad in a low moment and not something bitter please A24 I'm begging you.
Although something happened to go from this to Lilith leaving Lucifer alone in his workshop/studio when Charlie went to him:
But until they confirm otherwise or give us a valid reason, Lilith just seems like an awful mother and wife. Because Lucifer and Charlie have no clue of why she left, but their lack of worry for her health implies they know she left willingly because otherwise they should be more stressed and not just sad and wondering why she left.
And yes it's cruel abandoning your child, but Charlie was almost in what would be her 20s (since Charlie is 200 I think, and it translates to her 20s) when Lilith left.
But Lucifer is helpless against sinners and clearly very gullible, I'd be mortified to leave him alone for just an hour to do groceries (yes I'm a Lucifer girly, "you baby him" I know I know) and still he's left with no real explanation, no goodbye, nothing.
Unless (or until) they explain that she left because heaven threatened her somehow that if she didn't leave they'd kill him and Charlie I don't like her leaving them both like that and it paints her in a TERRIBLE light that she left to go to Heaven's spa resort whatever.
Right, now let's skip to the events of the show, Lilith's been gone for 7 years, he lost practically all contact with Charlie somewhere between 3 years or all 7 since he didn't know Charlie was dating Vaggie.
Charlie resents him for allowing the exterminations and she's never the one to call him. It's always him "being bored" (but based on what we see it's him making an excuse to hear her even if it's a bit trivial).
But knowing his priorities like we've known them, I'm 100% willing to bet money on the table that he allowed them under the condition that Charlie wouldn't be in harm's way which makes it so satisfying that it is when Charlie is in danger that his sole intervention was enough to finish the exterminations once and for all.
We know nothing of his time during the 7 years but I'm guessing he practically locked up to work on his ducks to keep his mind busy and not spiral. More than just a cute obsession they scream coping mechanism and it hurts, the fact that hell works arguably fine without him only helps to injure him further because it screams "you don't matter". To make that worse, we saw Lilith has ignored 687 calls (so like a call every 3 or 4 days) and Charlie didn't call him first a single time in years... and that's his family, I can see why he'd isolate himself from everyone if that's the treatment he gets from those who should love him most.
And Charlie doesn't call him until she needs something big from him (which I can sort of respect not wanting to abuse being the king's daughter and she probably doesn't know her dad's mental health is in the gutter but like a quick "hey dad, I'm gonna have lunch, k bye love you" please) and right away he goes YES!
...Except for putting her in the hands of going to the people that sent him to literal hell, but anything else he's nervously eager to agree to, no questions asked which is ultimately his downfall in season 2.
It melts me and kills me to see the way he MELTS just hearing and seeing his daughter even if it's something he thinks is pointless (but like the humans he knows is Lilith... Adam, and all of the sinners... he's allowed to be biased since he knows ONE good human soul).
Still the rest of the season ends well for him, great actually. He saved the day, was there to support AND ADMIT HE WAS WRONG to his daughter about her dream saying she changed his mind even if by then there was no proof of redemption. Everything was great, he was thriving!
Then season 2 comes around but I'll skip to Vox Populi because everything else I've already discussed. But I will say it is very sweet the other sins sent him gifts to try to reach out to him because hopefully he'll see there's lots of people who care about him still.
Not only was he humiliated over his powerlessness but bringing up Lilith is something that clearly stung deeply since he forgot he shouldn't have tried to strike Vox. But it's clear he has 2 triggers, his daughter and his wife (and you could argue that so is Alastor upstaging him to Charlie's eyes, heh). But look at this eyes and how he's backing away, this is not just rage, it's pain:
And when he goes back to the hotel all he can do is hide like a little boy as his daughter screams at him for trying to help because Vox used it against them when like... I don't know, I'd assume a Seraphim saying sinners deserved the exeterminations was worse, but still she lashes out on HIM and KICKS HIM OUT of a hotel he helped build (and with the power he has, I'd argue he made most of it). And he doesn't argue... he just does as his told with a smile.
And don't get me wrong, I don't hate Charlie. It's clear she was overwhelmed and regretted what she said to him. A very sad part of the family is that eventually you'll say things that hurt your loved ones. And having a lapse of being a bad daughter doesn't make you a bad person or even a bad daughter as a whole. She did try to apologize, I just would've liked to see Lucifer hear said apology.
Seeing him cry and immediately going to where "Charlie" (Vox) sent him, no questions asked just his voice cracking with that "I'll be there right away" destroyed me, he doesn't even expect an apology for being yelled at, he's the one trying to apologize to her for messing things up for her.
"I'm so sorry Charlie, please don't give up on me" shattered me like a glass vase and incinerated the remaining pieces. BECAUSE HE'S TERRIFIED. Last time he made a big mistake heaven did give up on him, and he probably thinks he made something to make Lilith go away too.
I've seen people say he was stupid for not seeing the warehouse was very obviously a trap and while yes, pookie please use more than 3 braincells... I can only imagine the desperation he was going through, Charlie is all the family he has left, he's not just stupid, he's desperate. And the call was from Charlie, to him Charlie can do no wrong, even if it's weird but then again, he saw her going through an emo phase (look at the photo's in his room when Charlie calls him in S1E5).
Which is why it breaks my heart how little look out for him when they see him come out from under the floor of the thing that was destroy all of hell. And okay, maybe they were pressed by time so they couldn't dedicate him more than 5 secs. But at least maybe make Charlie support her dad's weight like a human crutch while she talks to Pentious because the guy faceplanted in front of you, he clearly needs help. Look at him and tell me I'm not supposed to feel sorry for him.
And again, I'm not mad at Charlie, I imagine she is used to her dad's theatricals plus he's by far the most powerful creature we've seen in the show and is probably just right below God and Roo, she probably asssumes her dad is fine.
But I hate having to rationalize it instead of seeing him be treated with love because they made time to make a joke of him coming out on his own and faint in front of them. Am I supposed to laugh at his pain? Yes, his antics are funny, but please balance it a bit between making him be silly and treating him nice because otherwise he becomes a punching bag character and punching bag characters only make the creators seem like bullies.
TLDR AFTER SUCH A LONG RANT: yes I probably baby him too much and I am very much biased, I don't disagree, but he just makes me sad because he's giving his everything for crumbs of love and it makes me want to tend to him.
The connotations of exactly how fucking powerful is Lucifer continue to rise.
What do you mean he broke heaven’s shield in a single shot (only a bad tickle and lightheaded?) and even had so much power he was going to overload the doomsday device made of angelic metal just by being fired continuously? It took a Seraphim, the Princess of Hell, and how many fucking overlords just to contain that?
Then the throw away line that there’s nothing Vox can do to kill Lucifer confirming his own near immortality?
Having such an outrageously powerful character tied with Lucifer being horrifically apathetic and depressed is a fascinating combination. Especially considering the frankly debilitating punishment Lucifer has regarding his ability to tangibly impact Hell. It’s been fascinating to watch.
Especially since he might not be so apathetic anymore… Lucifer now knows that sinners can be redeemed.
Word on the street is that the next season will be about the Morningstars and I’m EXCITED.
Bro... JUST GIVE HIM A HUG BRUH, LIKE LOOK AT THAT FREAKING EXPRESSION 😭😭😭😭 VOXXXXXX OH HOW I HATE YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY FUCKING HEART AND NOW I'M CURSING! PLEASEEEEEE JUST GIVE HIM SOME HAPPINESS IN SEASON 3 😭😭😭😭 (honestly, since season 3 is kind hinted of Lilith being it's main villain, I honestly doubt it, BUT I HAVE HOPES FOR HAPPY LUCI AS FLASHBACKS) 😭😭
Was Charlie not concerned that her father passed out after he pulled HIMSELF out of the machine?? She ran to him and looked at him for like two seconds but then she just went to ignoring him while he was writhing on the ground.
Also it could just be me but it felt like Lucifer’s pain in the machine was played off for laughs. Saying “bad tickle!” with funny faces, really? We couldn’t get… an actual scream? A more serious moment? Fuck, a heartfelt scene after everything showing Charlie apologising or Lucifer recovering from being used as an actual battery?
I know I’m probably yapping about nothing but I hope that in ‘the Morningstar family season’ (s3) he isn’t just comedic relief. He was great in s1 but in s2 he definitely has more comedic scenes then serious moments, it felt like he got downgraded to ‘side character we can all laugh at’.
Just finished watching the Hazbin finale and OMG!! So good
Abel so under appreciated and his part in hear my hope amazing. You can defo see his panic over fighting and the damage his death left in him via his nosebleed.
Definitely hope we see more of him and Cain
Lilith coming back yess finally!!!
But wtf did they do to Lucifer’s character- he’s the king of hell even if a goofy version he’s so powerful that his power almanegd to break heavens shield in a one shot but can’t kill sinners that punishment of his sucks.
Cherri and sir pentious finally talking and flirting is everything I wanted for them both 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
