Simon is aware that Wille meditates. Wille has told him that Katja, his therapist, recommended he start as part of managing anger in particular. Simon has just never seen Wille meditate.
The reason is straightforward - Simon hates mornings. Simon loves warm cosy covers, and waking up slowly when Wille says his name softly next to the smell of a hot coffee.
Wille on the other hand was raised under relentless scheduling and self discipline, and the part of him that still wears it as a second skin wakes up early every day.
Wille will rush to silence his alarm, peel himself ever so slowly from under or around Simon so as not to wake him, and grab his dressing gown off the back of the door, before sliding almost (but not totally) silently out into the living area.
But today Simon wakes earlier than usual. He doesn’t drift back to sleep after Wille’s alarm. He feels Wille’s absence as a coldness where Wille’s arm was slung across his waist. They forgot to draw the blackout shades before bed (too distracted) and there is a sunbeam piercing annoyingly right in Simon’s face.
Besides, he finds himself suddenly curious to witness this quiet, morning, meditative version of Wille.
So Simon stretches, yawns, and groans his way out from under the covers. He grabs a hoodie from the pile of discarded clothes next to the bed, and steps into his slippers.
He doesn’t want to disturb Wille, so he tiptoes over to the bedroom door and just cracks it the littlest amount.
Wille’s profile is caught in the twin warmth of the sunrise through the balcony doors and the flickering flame of the tall pine-scented candle on their coffee table.
Wille’s eyes are half lowered, fixed on the flicker of the flame. He looks peaceful, like he’s in the room but also a thousand miles away.
Simon leans against the door frame and observes.
It’s not often he gets to watch Wille without his boyfriend noticing and scooping him up in an embrace, or asking Simon how he is, or bringing Simon snacks, or just coming to sit beside him - shoulder to shoulder, fingers linking them up.
A pang goes through Simon, seeing how grown Wille looks - the long lines of his neck and arms, the certain set of his jaw. There is still tension in Wille, that stiff posture bred through royal childhood that might never totally fall off, but he is much more relaxed than he used to be.
Wille always says it is Simon’s doing, but Simon feels something uncoil in his own body as he watches Wille meditate.
Wille has done this himself.
Just the same way he chose to stand up infront of Hillerska and say what he did, and the same way he sat infront of a camera to officially tell the nation he was giving away his crown. Wille has done almost everything the same way since Simon met him - terrified but sure.
And Simon is so totally, fatally, forever in love with that bravery.
He sighs (just a tiny one, before he can catch it in his throat) and Wille looks up from the candle.
He’s not upset by being disturbed. His mouth moves immediately up at the edges. He opens his arms wide, and Simon goes to him, like he always will.

Wille heard the music as soon as the elevator opened, in hindsight; he had heard it as he got out of the taxi, their kitchen window was open.
It made him smile; the knowledge that Simon was carefree, in their home and vibing to whatever new music he had found for the day.
Simon slided over the floorboards in only socks and underwear, curls thanking the humidity, with a makeshift microphone. The song wasn’t new-new tonight.
“I'm holding out for a hero—”
Wille smiled; “Do I suffice?”
“You’re home.” Simon sheepishly hid the spatula-microphone behind his back,“my darling knight!”
