My brother texts the family group chat (I don't know why - my Dad won't answer and I don't live there) to ask my parents if he can bring his shoes round to be polished. I point out that surely he can polish his own shoes. My Mum replies that the shoe polish and brushes are there, as if the very idea of my brother owning his own shoe polish and brushes is outrageous. Unnecessary. Despite the house he bought, 5 minutes down the road. Despite his full time job which requires dress shoes. Despite the 5 years he has senior to me.

Hundreds of miles away, a bag lies under my bed, filled with shoe polish and brushes.
