Its design embraces a nimble and sensitive response to a heritage context, while also meeting the specific needs of the client in creating a space that is a pleasure to live in. Transforming a previously dark and minimally ventilated house, the design breaks open the segregated floorplan (typical of this typology), to provide an engaging sequence of interlinked, yet not quite open-plan spaces, each with its own character to create a quiet haven - a suburban sanctuary. ⁠⠀ An existing heritage building is transformed through the introduction of a modern, two-storey addition that playfully re-interprets the distinctive geometry of the original dwelling through a contemporary lens. Now, the completed house is described by the architects as “one grand outdoor theatre for living”. Set within two dramatic concrete shrouds, the project pushes at the boundaries of residential design, yet it is simultaneously driven by a singular focus on the essential activities and experiences of human life. M E X • @dwellmagazine After years of admiring his work from afar, a young couple finally found an opportunity to enlist architect Pablo Pérez Palacios when they purchased property in an upscale housing development in central Mexico’s Querétaro City. As parents to a newborn, the young couple wanted a home that would be low-maintenance, child-friendly, and—most importantly—connected to the outdoors. But creating a seamless indoor/outdoor living experience would be a challenge given the housing development’s stringent regulations on where the house could be placed. There were also privacy concerns due to the proximity of neighboring houses. S C A R P • @thelocalproject Located on a granite outcrop of the scarp, this small project, Boya House by @maarch_co, is a restrained piece of contemporary design, a steel and glass box. 🌿 This site required careful consideration of the placement of the architectural solution within the natural environment.  The brief called for garden room and kitchen extension, plus interior and exterior renovation works that built upon the bones of an existing late 1970’s dwelling on the site. Within this space, a well-designed interior is a sharp contrast to the primality of the landscape outside. Fundamentally constructed in timber structure by Hans Donni, a Swiss builder whose careful attention to detail made this project a reality. The site is in a bushfire zone, but eliminated some of the risks by being built away from the upward slope, so the team succeeded in achieving open glazed areas where otherwise not possible.
