I want to do this on a larger scale, but I figured I’d start small first.  A quick study for gender in the shows currently running on Broadway.  Note: this does not include swings, alternates, and understudies.

This isn’t to say that casting in Broadway shows needs to match a 50/50 representation of men and women, but the scary thing is that I think this is a pretty good season for female representation in comparison to the past decades.  What troubles me is the huge discrepancy between who is actually paying for the product–in other words, who is seeing these shows–and who we actually see on stage.  I really look forward to continuing this study with more shows–I’m planning on tallying hundreds of shows over the past decades to see how it all adds up.

My mom and I were chatting about this as well, and we were talking about hugely male dominated shows.  Shows like Lion King, Book of Mormon, Newsies, and Kinky Boots.  Now, of course, I’m not saying that we need to turn Newsies on its head and have it be cast with all women, but what’s interesting is that male dominated shows are a norm.  It’s not odd to have cast listings say 16 m, 4 w.  But I have never seen a show or heard of a show that was the opposite.  I have never heard of a show where women far outnumber men.  Mamma Mia is probably the closest I’ve seen to a female dominated show, and it’s still only 18 women to 14 men.  Not the overwhelming statistics of shows like Book of Mormon (17 m, 5 w, or if we count all the swings and standbys, 27 m, 8 w.)  

Again, not every show is going to have an equal number of women as men.  But I think it’s rather disturbing that we don’t see shows that feature women in the same way that shows tend to feature men.

Interesting tidbits to think about:

Wicked was not on the equal list last time around. That’s likely because they probably have a larger number of female swings and understudies which tip the scales.

The percentage of male to female actors is exactly the same as it was a few years ago.

A few shows were almost equal men to women, but missed it by one: Amelie, On Your Feet, School of Rock, and Waitress.
