Soft launch of my store!
Getcha stocking stuffers here!
Hi.
I never wanted to be in a position to write this post. If youâve ever enjoyed any of my online chatter about Realm of the Elderlings or anything else, please read this and consider.
My father passed away early 2022. He has left me and my sibling with $50,000 worth of debt, and the costs continue to mount. Thatâs how much a year at my dream school, (that I dropped out of in 2020 because I couldnât afford it) costs.
He became ill and was hospitalized in a country I donât want to name, because I still like to pretend Iâm at least a little anonymous on this site, but itâs in the triangular region that runs between Slovenia, Greece and Bulgaria.
Hospital in that area is not what we expect where I live now (the US). Nursing was not provided. My sibling flew out to take care of him while he was in the hospital - changing our parentâs sheet and diapers, and feeding him. Ultimately, the hospital he was in that was local to where he had been living was not capable of providing the specific care he needed. In order to leave to go to the next one, my sibling paid completely out of pocket the cost of his weeks long stay.Â
He was transferred to a hospital in a nearby country, where we were told that if we wanted to bring him home, my father would not survive the flight without a new pacemaker. We paid out of pocket for this as well. Then we paid for a medical escort and oxygen for the flights. Then we paid out of pocket for that hospital as well. It was a total of 6 weeks of hospital time, with the most expensive aspect of it being the pacemaker - which went on a credit card to the tune of $20,000 alone.
He arrives in the US after 6 weeks of illness, and thanks to the system here, we did not have to pay anything more to get him medical care. Who knew that I would ever be praising the US healthcare system!
And then he died.
We worked with a funeral home that was happy to work with the University of Michiganâs donation program, and my fatherâs one month old pacemaker went into someone else who needed it. I like to imagine that it went right back to the part of the world he had been living in, since my sibling told me that Doctors and medical staff over there had been quite vocal that not a lot of pacemakers made it to that country, and most people couldnât afford them.
I am angry with my father, and this will never be resolved. My father was elderly. We had spent literally decades begging him to come home to the US so that we could take care of him, and he always refused. He always insisted he was about to get another full time job that would bring him money. He had been born into a wealthy family, completed three degrees in a field that was booming, and he refused to work for most of my life. Not only was this the case, but we found out after we lost him that he had emptied an investment account in mine and my siblings name that had been established when we were children. There should have been roughly $60,000-$80,000 (guessing, bc exchange rates) in the account. There was $121.
I literally planned my parenting choices around the fact that I couldnât go to college when I wanted to because of his financial selfishness - I want my children never to have to worry about the cost of schooling the way I did. I want my children never to have to turn to survival sex work to avoid homelessness. I want my children to never have to work 40 hours a week while theyâre in college full time. I want to pay their car insurance, their cell phone bills, their utilities, and when the college shuts down for vacation, I want them to have a home to come back to.
He consistently, throughout his life, never ever cared about how his choices affected his family. He refused to plan for the future, and we couldnât just leave him there to die without us.
So we are holding $50,000 of medical debt - on credit cards bc OF COURSE we didnât have that kind of money just lying around. And not to get too deep into the weeds, but there are some ongoing, expensive issues that have been continuing since he died, and look like they will continue for several years. So even after heâs gone, after all the work Iâve done to plan for my kids future - here is $50,000 and more we all have to work off that I canât invest in them.
I donât want to have to ask. But I have to to.
If you can spare a dollar, please spare it for me and my sibling. If you canât, please share and help me get this to anyone who can.

Can I ask where in the book it describes Fitz/Farseer coloring? I love all the fanart of the darker skinned Six Duchies people I just feel like I missed an important part of the books. I know Burrich is described as dark. I just really wanted to share with my mom that the Six Duchies ppl are dark skinned and I can't find where in the books it says that. Or did Robin Hobb say it in an interview?
I only remember a section where Molly is talking about the coarseness of Fitzâs hair, and how itâs less so because heâs got a mountains mother. I donât remember at all if it was ever explicitly stated, except in contrast to Kettricken, who shows up huge, white and blond compared to the petite, brown haired women Verity prefers.
RH tends to write in the mind of her characters. Fitz would never really say that everyone is brown if ... everyone is brown, the way he wouldnât describe how a horse works. Maybe other readers can add to this?
Mercor has an ancestral memory of a volcano eruptingâŠâŠand then thymara talks about how she doesnât think thatâs possibleâŠâŠâŠâŠ..interesting
If you had to pick 10 scenes from the entire RotE series (EXPECT THE MOST RECENT BOOK) as being the most important story scenes in the whole life of Fitz, what ten scenes would they be?
Yes, this is for art reasons.
Wizard wood
On Monday, I learned about fabrics and weaves in my costuming class, and something specific stood out.
Silk is made from the silk spun by silkworms. The silk from 3,000 silkworms goes into a single yard of silk.
The silk is harvested by waiting until the silkworm is cocooned and just short of hatching into whatever butterfly or moth they are. Then theyâre dunked in water to be softened, and the strands of the case are unraveled. The unborn silkworm is processed for fertilizer.
I was blown away to discover the real-life source of a major Elderlings plot point/ world building & wanted to share.
Also, because it is a protein-based fiber, it is considered to be

Eight days... O.O
A headcanon for each country tonight - some cracky, some not [spoilers for all books up to the end of the Rain Wild Chronicles]:
It is completely my headcanon that a Beloved without a particular future/series of events to protect and nurture (and therefore without the purpose theyâve grown used to having) is a Beloved who starts getting fiercely defensive of Fitz himself. Because for years they had to put Fitz through so much nasty âfor the greater goodâ and now that they donât have to anymore NO ONE ELSE GETS TO.Â
Beloved giving Chade a talking to. Beloved using their prodigious skills of manipulation to encourage a healthier, less guilt-ridden relationship between Fitz and Nettle. Beloved encouraging Fitz to think better of himself. Beloved having needle-sharp words for anyone trying to put Fitz down. This also extends to Bee, expect Bee is pretty quick to do it herself. Bee and Beloved playing at partners in crime to deal with any rude gossip about Fitz. And Fitz slowly feeling better, actually having a proper support system, and people actually getting along and not hurting each other with their words I want this so much
Elliania's and Beloved's tattoos
So I always wondered about these tattoos, why did they made them, using which kind of ink, why were they "alive" and hurting them ?
There are 3 kind of materials that could have been used for that purpose :the silvery-liquid skill, dragon eggs (magic wood), or memory stone. Because all 3 of them can make inanimate objects (here ink) move.
Now, we don't know if the Servants had access to these materials, or if they knew how to use them.
We know the Servants put the tattoos on Beloved to brand them and make them recognizable in Clerres.
And we do know that the Pale Women knew about memory stone, and knew how to use it. So my guess is she could have put some in the ink in Elliania's tattoo, and that would be the reason why the tattoo moves.
Another thing in favour of memory stones : we know that Beloved felt Fitz and knew of his life and whereabouts (kinda) when Fitz touched the memory stone carving that Beloved gave him. Having a tattoo containing memory stone could allow the Pale Women to know about Elliania's whereabouts.
But I don't think the Servants knew about the memory stone so...
What do you think ?
Ways in which I identify deeply with Motley: - loved and trusted the Fool at first sight - preens his hair when heâs upset and scared because she cares for him and wants him to be safe - sometimes says his name out loud very softly to herself - i too would steal a spoon from Fitzâs plate/hand if the Fool bid me to - would follow him to the worldâs end, most likely
Do you think âŠ
Motley is supposed to represent the reader?
I love the RotE fandom
Truly. I forget sometimes how this is a group of people who are consistently pleasant and chill about something we all love.Â
This! Also I love how considerate folks are about spoilers and the âcorrectâ reading order. We not only love these books, we want everyone else to have the same perfect experience of discovering their true beauty as we had.
Why is the Rain Wild River Acid?
Okay, so. Iâve been wondering this one for a while. We know that the river forks at some point, and the tributary that leads to Kelsingra is not the one that the acid flow comes from (iirc). So whatâs happening with the other one to make acidic - specifically, acidic enough to eat through wooden hulls and kill people.Â
Well, courtesy of the television habits of the glorious 1boo, thereâs the science explanation, which has to do with sulfur and stuff. As far as I can tell the river running through the Cueva de Villa Luz in Mexico is acidic, and the wikipedia page even describes it as giving the water âa milky appearanceâ. Sounds about right.
But come on, thatâs boring. Okay, actually, itâs really really cool, but RotE is a FANTASY SERIES. So, what about a fantasy series explanation? (warning: slightly crackpot but hey)
Although it could be a perfectly natural phenomenom⊠what if it has something to do with dragons?
Dragons breathe acid, or at least they spray it out. We know around the time of the natural disaster that wiped out Elderling civilisation, there were plenty of dragons about - and then there was only the cocooned Tintaglia and the sulking Icefyre. What happened to all of them?
Okay, I should probably stop trying to sound all grown up and logical about this because what Iâm really trying to say is what if at the source of the rain wild river thereâs a bunch of dead dragons that never got eaten by other dragons because they all died at once and their acid is feeding the river? And maybe they all died at once because they were a bit too close to the volcano, and everytime thereâs an earthquake it upsets the ground and dislodges more of the remains and the river runs white with dragon acid?Â
it can be sulfuric dragon acid if you like
please come on I love a good weird grusome theory
Okay, I admit my argument is not that strong XD Itâs just an interesting thought, and I love in-world explanations for stuff. The only major flaw I can think of is Iâm pretty sure the river was acid (at least to some degree) before the collapse, because isnât it supposed to be a major component in the cocoons? Maybe dragons made it that way by putting acid in it at the source though *nods at you* to preserve memories *nods some more* my theory totally makes sense mmhm.
âThere are a number of old âWhite Propheciesâ that relate to the betrayal of the Catalyst. Â White Colum says of this event, âBy his love is he betrayed, and his love betrayed also.â Â A lesser known scribe and prophet, Gant the White, goes into more detail. Â âThe heart of the Catalyst is bared to a trusted one. Â All confidence is given, and all confidence betrayed. Â The child of the Catalyst is given into his enemiesâ hands by one whose love and loyalty are above question.ââ
â Assassinâs Quest (page 654)
âAnd that was what the Servants never grasped until I betrayed you. Â That you were more to me than my Catalyst. Â Yet even I did not realize the full import of that closeness. Â That a child who was as much mine as yours and Mollyâs would be the result. Â A child given to us. Â Because I used you so mercilessly. Â And a child stolen, because I betrayed you.â

ONLY A FEW MORE WEEKS UNTIL THE BOOK!
just stumbled on this blog and the series seems up my alley! tips? i was just going to read it in order, i'm assuming that's fine?
YES, you must read Robin Hobbâs Realm of the Elderlings books in order of publication. You lose a lot of amazing storytelling if you donât do this.
Also, I would recommend blocking spoiler tags on tumblr and staying away from the wiki sites until youâre at least at the end of Foolâs Fate. Really and truly, you donât want to get spoiled on these books, because youâre cheating yourself out of something special.
