Private Security At Whole Foods Beats Black Man Unconscious, Leaves Him In A Pool Of His Own Blood

A private security guard working at Whole Foods in Oakland beat a black man unconscious on Thursday evening, according to witness accounts.One witness, Zoe Marks, told the Oakland Tribune that she “watched as the guard slammed the man against a concrete pillar, put him in a chokehold until he passed out, and threw him out of the store.” 

According to Marks, the man was in a verbal argument with a cashier but was not violent before being assaulted by the security officer. “He wasn’t shouting at anyone. He wasn’t violent or disruptive,” Marks said.Marks also posted an account of the incident — along with graphic photos of the victim — on Facebook.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 1,300 people were expected to attend a “Southern Heritage” rally in support of the Confederate flag on Saturday in front of the U.S. Capitol. Fewer than 50 showed up.

In the wake of this summer’s horrific murders of nine black churchgoers — committed by a manwho admired the Confederate flag — universities and state governments have faced heated calls to remove the flag from their public spaces. In response, many have taken down the symbols, prompting fierce backlash including pro-flag rallies in Alabama, Georgia, and now Washington, D.C.

In interviews with ThinkProgress, members of the small crowd said they wanted the U.S. government to hear their messages: preserve Confederate symbols, and squash the Black Lives Matter movement.

ISIS has launched three terrorist attacks in three countries today, leaving at least 54 dead. At least 25 have died in a suicide bombing of a Shia mosque in Kuwait. At least 28 have died in a mass shooting in Tunisia. One man was beheaded, his head put up for display, in an attempted attack on a U.S. plant in France.
