Lily had definitely put off going to see Marlene, and that made her feel even more guilty as she stepped into the busy hallway at St. Mungoâs. Her feet tapped against the tile, and she felt herself moving, but mostly she felt her heart pounding in her chest as she walked to Marleneâs room. She counted the numbers, her mind racing, until she finally stood outside the door.Â
Normally, Lily would have walked right in, wrapped Marlene in her arms, and told her that she looked like a queen even in a hospital robe. But today was different. Today was different because Lily had let her down, and her chest ached as she realized that Marlene might not have wanted her there. Needless to say, Lily blamed herself for what had happened to Marleneâs father, and she wished she had stayed. Then again, Alice might not have been safe if she hadnât left, but it was awful to think that she had to trade Marleneâs father for that.
Gathering up all her courage, Lily walked into the door. Hearing Marlene say her name broke her, but, instead of falling to the ground and begging for forgiveness, Lily crossed her arms and stared at the girl. âHi,â she said, simply, not really sure what else to say. âIâm sorry I didnât come sooner⊠I, umâŠâ She trailed off, looking away. âAre you feeling better?â
A compilation of conflicting thoughts began to bubble inside Marleneâs mind as she looked to the redhead standing to the side of her bed. Â The more immediate and irrational side of her wanted to blame Lily for leaving early, but the rationalized part of her knew it wasnât Lilyâs fault. Â Everything went sideways and while there were two Death Eaters she had to face, Marlene was sure she could take care of everything on her own. Â And she was wrong about that.
Blinking a couple of times, the blonde raised a hand as she shook her head. Â Fingers bent and refusing to cooperate, she sat it back down atop the hospital bed. Â âDonât worry about it,â she said in the same voice. Â And in all honesty, she knew that was the main gist of what she wanted to say. Â While not all of her was ready to forgive herself, she knew she needed to say something positive and helpful after everything that happened tonight.
Marlene began to trace along the seam of her blankets as she rattled around in her mind to continue the conversation. Â She didnât want things to be weird or awkward between them. Â After all, they were friends werenât they? Â Even if she was engaged to the man she considered her brother, she and Lily were friends right? Â âHowâs Harry and James?â she asked, turning her head so she could fully look at Lily.
