I do agree with covid pulling us into a pitfall and was gonna add it but couldnt fit it somewhere lol. And this is coming from someone who joined the archive in 2023!

I also knew it would get bad the moment people started saying they waited like 6 months for their acceptance letter... I only had to wait a month

I also think the fact that there will soon be more registered users than works isnt helping either

oh i didnt know the stats were like that, damnnn :')) ive been into fanfic/writing since i was a teen and its wiiiild to think of 1)how good we have with ao3 and 2)how mainstream fanfic/fandom in general got.

My take: its because Ao3 has gotten too mainstream. There. I said what I said. No one follows the wattpad to ao3 pipeline that 90% of people took anymore and fandom ettiquite is quite literally dead.

People are also so obsessed with becoming a famous ao3 writer (mskingbean89, tbhyourelame, lameparties, subcorax, etc. And not to mention Rachel herself) that they are desperate and are now stooping to low blows like AI. HR was good for the lgbtq+ community, but it was not good for fandom spaces like ao3.

People in fandoms as huge and that are peaking right now (our example being HR) want that rush of "oh my god im famous" that they know is possible, yet they dont go about that in the right ways. There is barely any passion behind the words people write anyone, if it's even people and not AI.

Things are being writen to just be published and maybe turned into a hit in general in the normal author world, and that has now bled into fanfiction. Everyone wants a chance to say "oh I wrote this" and the only way they feel confident enough they can read that is by leaving nasty grams on authentic fan works while using AI themselves.

yeah... i agree abt it becoming too mainstream. There's always been Big Name Fans in every fandom since the dawn of fandom culture, but the commodification of it is a lot more prevalent than it used to be... i also feel like there's smth to be said about how the new-ish readers don't really know how to properly engage with the community, demanding more and more updates in a very short span of time - and sometimes eve going as far as feeding the fic into gpt or claude so it can be finished faster :')) im not that tapped into HR fandom but i do keep an eye on it, and it's a bit tragic how it became this poster child of all things bad in modern fandom. AI usage has spread thru most fandoms, but with the newer ones (like HR or the Pitt)/the ones that got a huge influx of normies (like stranger things for example, with the byler rush to publish a billion new fics in order to be top 1 ship) this issue becomes so glaring it's actually hard to find a good story to read :')) as with most things, COVID was what started the final erosion of fandom as we knew it, and i do hope we find our way back into a more... niche way to deal with fandom again. AI is a huge fucking issue, but so is the lack of a 4th wall separating us from the creators/actors/ccs/etc, or how fandom/fanarts/fanfics are now used as a marketing tool that execs have no shame exploiting
