i need to talk about kingdom again— even though im like the only person on this site actively posting about it, i have thoughts.
because i think kingdom's take on war is quite nuanced and i hate it when i see people saying ‘oh, kingdom is so hype’ because i feel like that’s missing half the picture. like, yes, the battles in kingdom are made to be exciting to follow, but it’s written for readers to see multiple sides.
i think kingdom does a really good job at depicting how fighting to protect something you care about or for the hope of a better future can be empowering while simultaneously showcasing the atrocities that go hand in hand with that.
with protagonists who believe the only way to eventually achieve peace after centuries of war is by winning the war paired with the effort hara yasuhisa puts into keeping the battles interesting with the large scale, high stakes, and creative strategies, i can almost see how people get caught up the excitement of the battles and label it as ‘hype’. however, i say ‘almost’ because literally every step of the way, we are shown the moral dilemmas and repercussions of these battles and that they are not something that should be glorified.
the coalition invasion arc, specifically the battle at sai, shows this duality very well. sei’s propaganda speech to convince the residents of sai to fight ri boku’s army instead of surrendering is done to invoke a sense of ardor that comes from fighting to protect something. however, it is blatantly propaganda. ri boku promised not to kill anyone of they were to surrender, but because of sei, they didn’t surrender, and half the city lost their lives. even though they do win the battle in the end, the excitement of victory is undermined by how tragic it is that so many people had to die. and we see sei after the battle is over feeling bad about what he did, despite being the one who incited them to fight in the first place. even a character who sees war as necessary means to an end cannot overlook the repercussions, which is why it baffles me when i see readers/watchers doing just that and only focusing on the excitement they get reading/watching the battle scenes.
i really enjoy how kingdom presents war as something that can seem exciting while simultaneously being harrowing, and i think that’s a large part of what makes it a compelling and impactful story, at least to me.
