Handrew seemed content to just climb over him. He’d missed the rotting hand. The brofists and the sad drinking together. Though why he was back was terrifying. The last time he’d seen the hand he’d tossed it directly at the Raven Queen to get her to leave him alone in the Shadowfell. Now it was back he was just waiting for her to make him return or something else fucked up.

A raven. Welp, he had two connections with that. Stupid Vistani bloodline. And the whole The Raven Queen has some weird interest in me shit. He should be getting home. Finding the house and sleeping before his next alcohol binge. Now they were looking for the Ring again he wanted to be as drunk as possible so he could handle the guilt. Or, more reasonably, hide it.

“Sure.” He should stop going with random people he didn’t know. But right now he wasn’t thinking beyond that next bottle of wine.

Uncertain how to proceed, Alec decided to move next to the man in order to brace him should he stumble. People this drunk didn’t tend to be the most stable on their feet. As they walked he kept looking back to Paultin. He was clearly a man in pain; not that Alec really remembered pain. How long had it been since he’d felt pain? Physical or emotional? Fear, happiness, anger. They were all muted.

Well, perhaps not anger... that he could still feel. She took much from him, but the Raven Queen had left him that.

“I didn’t say yes,“ he eventually stated, apropos of nothing. Alec looked forward, into the darkness. The ever present void that seemed to encompass his life, now, echoing in that shadow. “I remember... pain. Then darkness, and emptiness. It wasn’t cold, or frightening. Just... deep, all encompassing. Then the dark... wasn’t empty, but crushing.“ He glanced to the man beside him, not for the first time wondering at the wisdom of sharing this. “I died, murdered I think. She dragged me back, and put something inside me. And for the privilege of having my final rest denied... she owns me.“

He distinctly remembered crawling out of his own shallow grave, caked all in dirt and reeking of death. Alec would never forget.

In retrospect, he shouldn’t have gotten out of the house. Being trapped in his room meant he at least knew where he was. Simon could keep an eye on him. Was he alright? Gods, what a concept. A real thinker. He felt both worse and better. He’d spoken about one of many traumas he had experienced in his what felt like never ending life. Sondra. But clearly the world wasn’t done reminding him he fucked up with the Ring Of Winter.

“I wish. Listen, if you hear the Raven Queen ask you for shit, say no. I mean, Handrew here is pretty chill but the whole trauma thing and her gifts are usually weird and just straight up evil. Same for the Ring Of Winter and joining Lathander Paladins when they ask you to join them. Basically, say no whenever I said yes.” Did he make any sense? Probably not. But when had that stopped him? According to most fanfiction, never. Being the only person aware of the forth wall meant he could be that level of crazy and still be quite sane.

Five years ago the sight of a desiccated, rotting, hand crawling onto someone’s shoulder would have sent him screaming for the hills. Presumably. Alec could recall only the barest scraps of his life before. Before... did he say Raven Queen? Well, someone else in his boat it would seem. Or at least in the same river, approaching a metaphorical waterfall.

His Raven familiar, Bacon, glided in to perch on his shoulder, then, chattering quietly to himself. Alec looked over this man, trying to make sense of him. Clearly drunk, clearly perturbed in some way. Most of what the man said didn’t make any damn sense, but the Raven Queen... that sent a chill up his spine.

“Look... why don’t you come with me. I think the inn I’m staying at is nearby, we can get you something warm to eat, take the edge off. When you’re feeling better, I’ll help you find where you need to be. Deal?“
