There were several things that Remus hated with a burning passion, namely cargo shorts and melted chocolate. However, Remus had quickly discovered that there was something else taking the number one spot.
Working at the annual summer fair was the bane of Remus’ existence. Each day, as he sat behind the control dashboard for the Tilt-a-Whirl, he fantasized about quitting. The amount of people wearing cargo shorts was absolutely sinful.
The day was droning on and on. Remus could feel himself getting sunburnt. As he shifted uncomfortably in his ugly polyester uniform, he found himself drifting happily into a daydream.
He wanted nothing more than to slip his boss a note saying I quit, you dickwad.
Suddenly, his blissful thoughts were interrupted.
“Dude, you look miserable.”
Remus looked up. There, before him, was a boy about seventeen, same as him. He was on the taller side with shoulder length black hair. There was something about him that said I’m hot, and I know it. He silently scolded himself as soon as he realized he had been raking over the stranger with his eyes.
“Why? You’re working at a fair! I’d kill to work at a fair. It’d be so much better than my job. I deliver fucking pizzas,” said the guy.
Remus could see that his friends, a skinny boy with glasses and a short, chubby one with sandy colored hair, were anxious to get on the Tilt-a-Whirl.
“This job sucks the soul out of you, although I probably wouldn’t be good at delivering pizza. I’d just eat them in the car. Also, I need to start the ride now,” Remus said.
“Right, sorry. We’ll be back later!” the boy said, smiling at him.
Remus watched as he and his friends somehow managed to smush into a single cart. Although this was technically against the rules, Remus was too bitter to say anything. Screw this job.
Remus could hear the boys shouting at each other as the ride slowly began to move.
“Move your fat ass over, Prongs!” the hot boy said to the guy with glasses.
Prongs elbowed him, shouting, “No! You move your huge ego, Pads!”
What in the fresh hell are these names? Remus thought to himself.
As the carts began to move faster and faster, Remus could only hear snippets of their conversation.
The sandy haired boy looked like he was going to wet himself. “Guys, I think I might get sick.”
Pads snorted, “Wormtail, there’s a five-year-old girl in the next cart. Pull yourself together, man.”
The ride soon came to an end. Wormtail immediately dashed off of the ride, heading towards the bathrooms. Remus didn’t blame him.
He watched as Pads and Prongs sauntered off the ride. Pads smiled at him as they left, and Remus wondered if he actually would be seeing him later.
Several hours passed, mid-afternoon dissolving into early evening. Remus was sipping on a large diet Coke, eavesdropping on families.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over him. Looking up, he realized that the hot guy and his friends were standing in front of him.
“Sirius, you are the least subtle person in the world,” Prongs said, rolling his eyes.
So, Sirius is his name, Remus thought to himself. Well, it’s better than Pads.
“Fuck off, James. Subtlety is my middle name.”
“It really isn’t, Padfoot,” said Wormtail.
Sirius shoved him, “You are no help at all, Peter.”
As Remus watched the three of them bicker, he was reeling over the fact that Sirius called him cute.
“Uh, guys, I have to start the ride.”
“Oh, right! C’mon, you fuckers,” said Sirius as he pulled James and Peter to a cart.
The ride went by smoothly, although he heard copious amounts of high-pitched shrieking from Peter.
As the boys were leaving the ride, Sirius left a ripped piece of paper on the control dashboard.
“I said I would be back,” Sirius said with a wink.
Remus opened the folded paper, taking in the neat block letters and the telephone number underneath.
Call me! I think I can make you less miserable ;)
Remus smiled to himself. Maybe the fair wasn’t as bad as he thought.
