of  all  the  places  in  the  theater  this  guy  could  have  chosen,  somehow  he  managed  to  pick  a  seat  right  behind  donnie  and  gretchen.  donnie  figures  they  should  have  sat  in  the  back  row,  but  gretchen  said  she  could  see  better  near  the  front.  besides,  maybe  this  won’t  be  too  difficult.  they  could  always  move  as  a  last  resort  if  the  stranger  puts  up  an  argument.

❛  so  do  you  blame  whoever  did  it  ?  the  guy’s  a  pervert.  i  think  the  person  did  us  all  a  favor.  i’ve  got  a  kid  sister,  real  young  and  innocent.  what  would  you  tell  her  ?  that  ...  that  whoever  did  it  is  a  dangerous  criminal  ?  ❜  he  tries  to  remain  objective,  inquizitive,  nothing  more  and  nothing  less.  he  can  only  hope  that  he  doesn’t  come  across  as  snide,  though  that’s  how  he  feels.  it’s  completely  backwards  to  investigate  alleged  arson  when  the  ‘  victim’s  ’  exposure  benefits  the  general  populous,  especially  the  children.  the  flames  only  revealed  to  the  public  what  donnie  already  knew  --  the  man  is  a  fake,  the  fucking  antichrist.  and  now  it’s  his  turn  to  fear  condemnation.

donnie  has  never  enjoyed  group  projects,  so  a  joint  book  report  with  a  girl  he  has  never  spoken  to  outside  of  class  doesn’t  strike  him  as  particularly  exciting  (  although  they  do  get  to  choose  the  book  ).  she’s  a  pretty  girl,  he  will  admit;  a  nice  girl,  as  well.  so  he  has  no  qualms  with  the  assigned  partnership  --  at  least  he  isn’t  stuck  in  a  group  with  ricky  danforth.  they  had  planned  to  meet  in  the  school  library  after  school,  and  thus  commenced  their  search  for  the  most  fitting  book.
